Good Morning Neighborhood Liaisons,

As you may be aware, the City of Davis, is in the process of redrawing the districts of our City Council. This process is required by law in order to assure that residents have proper representation by City Council members based on population. This is undertaken every ten years to utilize updated information provided by the US Census. We want to make sure you know of the opportunities for you and your community to participate in this important process. Attached and shown below is a press release which has all the details about participation. You can ask questions or leave comments by email to districts at cityofdavis.org<mailto:districts at cityofdavis.org>.

Please feel free to forward to your neighborhood lists.

Thank you,

Carrie Dyer

CITY OUTLINES REDISTRICTING INPUT OPPORTUNITIES

Dec. 7, 2021 –The City of Davis announced today that is has scheduled multiple input opportunities for the public on the City’s redistricting process. The City is in the process of redrawing the boundaries (called redistricting) that define City Council districts that will take effect for the November 2022 election (and in its associated primaries). Below is a listing of online and in-person input opportunities.

Now – Review information on redistricting at www.cityofdavis.org/districts<https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.cityofdavis.org%2Fdistricts&data=04%7C01%7C%7C5c11b8eddd3542a7f02a08d9ba7df1ac%7C84df9e7fe9f640afb435aaaaaaaaaaaa%7C1%7C0%7C637745873617837894%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000&sdata=yDV4BSNVw9sd%2FqG6BE9yNju%2B7KloeMcBQkMKHcM804o%3D&reserved=0> and provide comments by email at: districts at cityofdavis.org<mailto:districts at cityofdavis.org>

Dec. 13 – Attend a community workshop on district mapping. The workshop will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Davis Senior Center, Valente Room, 646 A Street. The open house format, in-person workshop is an opportunity to hear from Redistricting Partners, the demography consultants, and learn about the process of redistricting, ask questions and participate in a drawing exercise. Members of the public will be able to create their own five-district map each with a population of around 13,500 using the map of census blocks. Information about the census blocks is available now on the City website at www.cityofdavis.org/districts<https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.cityofdavis.org%2Fdistricts&data=04%7C01%7C%7C5c11b8eddd3542a7f02a08d9ba7df1ac%7C84df9e7fe9f640afb435aaaaaaaaaaaa%7C1%7C0%7C637745873617837894%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000&sdata=yDV4BSNVw9sd%2FqG6BE9yNju%2B7KloeMcBQkMKHcM804o%3D&reserved=0> (see map template). In fall of 2019, the City converted from an at-large election system for its City Council elections to a by-district system and district boundaries must now be reviewed and adjusted based on 2020 census data. In the district election system, the City is divided into separate geographic districts. The City has five districts. Each council member is elected by the registered voters of the particular district in which the council member resides. Voters do not vote for candidates outside their districts. Redistricting ensures that each city council member represents approximately the same number of constituents.
