Neighbors,

A residence on D Street was broken into and robbed, the interior
damaged with all drawers and closets having their contents turned out.
It is believed this happened Friday night. The resident was out of
town. The structure is located on 6th Street just to the east of the
church, the newest of our "tiny abodes" as John Lofland likes to call
them.

This coupled with at least three instances of gang tagging on the
surface of C Street, on a home and on the new high school in the last
two months suggests we need to investigate nighttime noises to the
extent it is safe to do so. Please call the police in situations that
seem unusual. It is hard to recognize an extreme event when it is in
progress. Nevertheless one burglary in a neighborhood may be just the
start of several. Leaving some yard lights on where they exist might
discourage serial attempts. Make sure you lock your doors. If you
keep valuable, portable equipment such as new AirMacs lying about,
perhaps you could carry them locked in the trunk of your car for a
while.

I can tell you that our border collie mix was up pacing, vocalizing and
behaving quite nervously Friday night. We live about one block from
the burgled residence. Since we didn't notice anything out of place in
our yard or on the perimeter of our home we just put him back to bed.
But now I wish we had done a little more.
