Starting Sunday night, the U.S. Forest Service will shut down nine national forests in California through early September because it considers them too dangerous for visitors.

Included are the Shasta-Trinity and Klamath national forests.

Extreme fire conditions — including dry brush and trees, low humidity and hot temperatures — are making the forests unsafe, according to a forest service announcement Thursday night.

“We have over 100 large fires (burning) nationally,” Plumas National Forest supervisor Chris Carlton said at a Dixie Fire briefing Thursday. We don’t have the resources to battle all those fires and keep the public safe.

Temporary closures are necessary to keep people safe and reduce the risk more fires could start, regional forester Jennifer Eberlien said in the announcement. “Fires are running very quickly due to drought conditions."

The following forests will close at 11:59 p.m. Sunday, and won’t reopen until 11:59 p.m. on Sept. 6, the forest service said.

   - Modoc National Forest
   - Klamath National Forest
   - Plumas National Forest
   - Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit
   - Shasta-Trinity National Forest
   - Lassen National Forest
   - Six Rivers National Forest
   - Mendocino National Forest
   - Tahoe National Forest

A tenth forest, the El Dorado National Forest, is already under a temporary closure due to the 68,630 acre Caldor Fire.

Forest service staff, some residents and firefighters may enter forest areas. For more information and a full list of exemptions see the closure order at https://go.usa.gov/xF7EM.
