THIS DAY IN HISTORY: 1911 - The first airplane rescue at sea was made by the destroyer "Terry." Pilot James McCurdy was forced to land in the ocean about 10 miles from Havana, Cuba.

ACADEMICS/OPPORTUNITIES/EVENTS:

Enjoy a delicious dinner, singing and dancing at the 30th annual DHS Jazz Choir Cabaret - the choir's most elaborate production and largest celebration of the year. Dinner shows will be held Saturday, Feb. 10 and Sunday, Feb 11 at Emerson Junior High. A final show-only performance will be held on Saturday, Feb 17 at Brunelle. Play the Knave, an interactive karaoke-style Shakespeare videogame, is coming to the After Hours program here at Davis Senior High Library! Come by on Mondays from 5:30-7:30pm to join in on this exciting new take on Shakespeare with avatars that allow you to be anything from an alien to a Roman soldier!

Spoke Literacy and Art Magazine is now accepting submissions for its spring issue. The submission deadline is March 2nd and the theme is Home. Register for the National Honor Society! We will be outside S-12 at lunch from January 22nd to February 2nd. Bring 5 dollars and a transcript from last semester. Active members should also bring an hour's sheet. We look forward to seen you there!



Mindfulness is the practice of paying attention to the present moment and noticing the thoughts and sensations that arise. Who should practice mindfulness? Everyone who would like to feel calmer, more connected, and generally happier. Mindfulness training will be held in room O-5 every Wednesday from 2:45 to 3:15pm. For more information, contact Ms. Tabor in O-5.

Love to Sing?  Davis High School Choral Audition: Come sing with the DHS auditioned choirs: the Madrigal Singers, Jazz Choir and Advanced Treble Choir. Audition Application due MONDAY, FEBRUARY 26th.  Audition dates are March 5-9th

CAREERS:

Are you looking for a summer job?  If so, the City of Davis is holding a free Job Skills Workshop on Wednesday, January 31 at 4:00 p.m. in the Veteran's Memorial Center Theater.  Participants will learn how to contact with potential employers, write a resume, and prepare for job interviews. Come to the Career Center for more information.


If you are a junior boy or junior girl interested in government, come to the Career Center to apply for the American Legion Boys State and Girls State all-expense paid summer programs.  Students in the program will actively participate in all phases of creating and running a working government. Those who apply must be strong academically, have leadership skills and an interest in community and government. Deadline to apply is February 21.
If you are interested in becoming a doctor, you should attend Phi Delta Epsilon's Pre-Medical Youth Conference on Saturday, April 14 on the UC Davis campus.  You will hear from physicians on what it takes to get into medical school, how to be a successful pre-med student, learn how to take blood pressure, witness and perform a suture procedure and more.  Admission and lunch are free!  Come to the Career Center for more information.
