THIS DAY IN HISTORY
-1921 Engineer at General Motors Thomas Midgeley discovers adding Tetraethyl lead (TEL) to gasoline would eliminate unpleasant noises (known as Knocking and Pinging) that internal combustion engines make when they operate. For more than five decades oil companies would saturate the gasoline they sold with lead, a deadly poison. During the 1970's the Environmental Protection Agency required that carmakers phase out lead-compatible engines in the cars they sold in the United States.
