ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY: First films submitted to review board. On this day in 1909, movie studios, including Biograph, Vitagraph, the Edison Studio, Pathe, and others, begin submitting films to the Board of Censorship for review. The New York-based board, made up of private citizens who screened movies and pointed out objectionable material, was set up by movie studios as a self-policing body to help avoid government censorship.
