Dear IRWS Volunteers,
The Interfaith Rotating Winter Shelter is gearing up for another
amazing season. The shelter will be opening on:
Sunday, November 28th
Davis Community Church
The IRWS Board and Core Team have been working hard to ensure that
this year is another transformative experience for everyone involved.
As we prepare for this coming season, we invite you to join us in the
preparations. In this email you will find various ways you can help,
as well as some exciting new developments. We hope you will consider
joining us in making the shelter the best it can be!

New Co-chair
Jenna Templeton
A leader, activist and advocate for various underrepresented and
discriminated groups, Jenna is excited to serve as the new Co-Chair
for the Interfaith Rotating Winter Shelter of Davis. She also serves
as a Lead Consultant for the Davis Empowerment Project and is the
chief producer of music concerts benefiting the ALS (Lou Gehrig's
Disease) Assocation, Greater Sacramento Chapter. Jenna has fallen in
love with working alongside local individuals dealing with
homelessness and at-risk of homelessness, and plans to dedicate her
career to further empowering and aiding homeless and indigent
individuals in the Yolo/Sacramento regions.

Project
Growing out of the IRWS, theDavis Empowerment Project(DEP) is a newly
formed social enterprise venture undertaken by homeless and formerly
homeless guests.
The DEP, with support from a growing network of community members,
is creating a small business to move themselvesout of homelessness.
Still in the intial phases, the DEP is currently working on a
feasibility study to determine which business idea has the greatest
potential for success.

New Volunteer System
In response to feedback about the online volunteer system last year,
the IRWS is trying a new system that automatically sends out reminders
via email. Only your name will be visible to the public. All other
information (phone, email) are only accessible by designated IRWS staff.
Once the volunteer system is up and running, we'll post it on our new
website www.interfaith-shelter.org.
Ways to Help!
The IRWS has a LOT of work to accomplish before the opening of the
shelter in November. There's numerous ways, both big and small, with
which you can help.
DONATE ITEMS:
Donations of the following items would help tremendously! Item
donations can be made at Davis Community Church (412 C Street).
Clean sleeping bags in good or excellent condition
New socks
Action/Adventure movies (DVD)
Rain ponchos
BECOME A MEMBER OF THE "CORE TEAM"
Become part of the IRWS Core Team, which is responsible for the
planning and overall administration of the shelter. Core Team members
select areas for which they have a passion.

Special Training:
Mental Health First Aid
Grace-in-Action, a faith based nonprofit serving the homeless
community, is co-sponsoring a special training by Yolo County Mental
Health on Saturday, Nov. 13th and Sunday, Nov. 14th from 9:00pm -
4:00pm. Attendees must attend BOTH sessions to become certified.
What do Mental Health First Aid training participants learn?
Just as CPR training helps a layperson with no clinical training
assist an individual following a heart attack, Mental HealthFirst Aid
training helps a layperson assist someone experiencing a mental health
crisis, such as contemplating suicide. In both situations, the goal is
to help support an individual until appropriate professional help
arrives.
Mental Health First Aiders learn a single 5-step strategy that
includes assessing risk, respectfully listening to and supporting the
individual in crisis, and identifying appropriate professional help
and other supports.

Homelessness Awareness Week
November 14th - November 20th
Attend any of several community events as Davis residents come
together to care for local hungry and homeless individuals. For more
