Please read the letter below, especially the paragraph relating to the
proposed sale of the Civic Center Field on B Street between City Hall
and MLK High School.

Below I've forwarded a letter concerning a City of Davis staff project
that is just now gaining momentum. Please take the time to:

Examine the issue spelled out below -- it does express a particular
point of view but it also is a relatively detailed account of the
staff proposal: you will find formal proposals http://cityofdavis.org/pgs/press-releases/repository/2010-07-06.cfm
with other documents available as they are put up on the site. The
number of comments and strength of comments coming from our
neighborhood will be important in the final determination of the
future of Civic Field and other city parks.

Prepare comments, no matter how brief or from which position.
Particular issues for comment might be: what you like or dislike
about the sites proposed for new ball fields; the city of Davis
selling off its parks; the loss of a common greenspace for the area
between 5th and 8th and roughly Park and G; the likelihood that the
ball field would be field developed into mid- to high density housing;
whatever you might identify as worthy of comment?

Thanks for your consideration,
Sheryl Gerety
Secretary, ONDNA Board

> Hi All,
>
> I need to bring your attention to a very important and disturbing
> issue which has evolved recently which needs your input now. The
> City is taking comments for the Notice of Preparation for an EIR for
> a Sports Complex. There are three sites to be studied including the
> Howat Ranch (700 acres which the City owns and is just 1 mile east
> of the City), the Shriner’s site (which the City owns and is just
> east of Wildhorse) and, unbelievably, the former toxic landfill site
> (which the City owns and is just north of the Covell Village site)
> which has known toxics. The Notice of Preparation (NOP) for the
> Sports Complex EIR is taking comments due by Friday, July 16, 2010
> at 5pm (only 10 days away) and your comments are needed now (see
> email address below for Anne Brunette who is the City staff member
> assigned). The toxic landfill site makes no sense for a sports
> complex for children. It also makes no sense because of the
> traffic, night lighting, and noise impacts (PA systems and crowd
> noise) would significantly impact the nearby neighborhoods. A sports
> complex was proposed in the Covell Center project in 1997 and was
> strongly opposed by the nearby neighborhoods and others who reviewed
> the damning data on the traffic and other impacts as well as the
> fiscal studies which revealed the financial infeasibility of the
> sports complex then in this vicinity. The sports complex and Covell
> Center were not approved by the City. Yet, the city seems to have
> lost its memory of this history, and lost its sense of reason.
>
> Another issue of concern is that the NOP is suggesting that the city
> sell off some of its parks like the downtown Civic Center Field (in
> back of City Hall) and the Little League Field (at F ST. and Covell
> Blvd.) to generate revenue to help pay for a sports complex. Since
> the Civic Center Field is the only downtown recreation field this
> proposal is unacceptable. In fact NONE of our parks should be sold
