Dear Old North neighbors:
The ONDNA held its annual meeting and picnic yesterday afternoon in
the pocket park between D and E Streets, adjacent to City Well #1 and
the Lyda Williams Memorial Garden. After a short meeting in which the
main business was election of a new Board, everyone ate and conversed
heartily. Representatives from our "sister" core neighborhood
organizations were in attendance (Tim Allis from Old East and Susan
Crocker from Central Park West, as was mayor pro-tem, Susan Greenwald).
Retiring from the Board are: Dan Braunschweig, Andy Wallace and Bruce
Winterhalder.
Newly elected to the Board are: Sheryl Gerety, Kathleen Groody and
Donald (Dutch) Martinich.
Continuing members, with positions renewed by re-election, are: Dennis
Dingemans, Tony Martin, Dan Quickert, and Steve Tracy.
At the suggestion of Angela Wilson and Steve Tracy, those assembled
were asked to name the topics and ideas that should be on future
agendas of Old North. Among the suggestions offerred:
-We should follow closely the possible sale and development of the
DJUSD property, five hundred block, between B and C Streets.
-We would benefit from closer coordination of events and activities
with the Food Co-op.
-We might investigate having a coordinated yard sale that spanned Old
North.
-We should prepare an inventory of emergency preparedness in the
neighborhood.
-We would benefit from tightening up procedures and attention to our
by-laws.
-We should be watching carefully the zoning of G Street.
-We might want to return to the issue of scheduling an alley clean-up
day, and consider asking the City and DWR to return to alley trash
pick-up.
-We would benefit from closer coordination with Old East and Central
Park West, as we share problems and opportunities in common.
-And, we want to be watching the B Street renewal process carefully.
Not content only to organize the picnic and hand-cranked ice-cream for
the Annual Meeting, Dan Szumski also supplied the strawberry desert
wine and was busy recruiting host households for the holiday
progressive dinner this coming December. Several individuals took note
of special contributions this last year: John Lofland, Heather
Richardson and Tony Martin for carrying-through the heritage sign
project, and outgoing Board members for perseverance and continuing
good humor on projects, some finished and some not.
My appreciation, to everyone who has worked so hard on behalf of our
small community over the last two years. Your (retiring) president,
Bruce
