[OldNorth] Is Davis really so dense?

As much fun as that Washington Post report that John forwarded around seems
(Davis denser than New York City?), this semingly shocking result is
*entirely* an artifact of where this particular study chose to draw the
boundaries of what it classified as an "urban area".

Reality check: If you pick, say, San Francisco proper, you get 740,000
people in 45 square miles = 16,000 people/square mile, average. It varies a
great deal spatially, of course.

In fact, you can see a global listing of population densities for cities at

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_selected_cities_by_population_density

(remember to multiply by 2.58 to convert population/km2 to population/mi2 )

New York 26,553 per sq mi
    Manhattan 66,690
San Francisco 16,571
Los Angeles 7,846

Vancouver 13,122
    West End 51,600

Seoul 42,289
Tokyo 14,590
    Nakano dist. 51,853
