437 J Street Public Hearing

is scheduled as the first item of the regular session at 7:30pm, Tuesday 6/13.

WE URGE EVERYONE TO ATTEND THIS MEETING TO SHOW SUPPORT FOR A CASE IN 
WHICH THE PROCESS WORKED!!!  (Almost always we are there to testify 
against negative projects.)  PLEASE READ ON.

History:  This project came up long ago and elicited many complaints 
from the neighbors.  The developer came back with a new plan, but 
many aspects of the project, though conforming in some ways to the 
design guidelines, did not sit well with the immediate neighbors.

Recently:  The developer came back several weeks ago with a new plan 
that addressed almost every one of the neighbors concerns.  A large 
open space in the back corner to prevent the "loom" factor, 
preserving the historic structure, smaller structures with fewer 
bedrooms less likely to become "de facto dorms."  Those present gave 
the project an overall nod.

This is one of those occasions where the process "worked."  Both the 
developer and the neighborhood compromised, the developer will get to 
build a profitable project, and most neighborhood concerns were 
addressed.  It is not often that we have an opportunity to speak in 
favor of a development in our neighborhood.  But it is important that 
we do so to show that:

When a developer and the neighborhood work together, it is possible 
to build a project that "fits in" and is profitable.
