Old North Neighbors:
For your information. . .
On December 20th, Esther Polito led seven members of the City
of Davis planning staff on an afternoon walkabout of Old North. As I
understand, their route included observation or visits to the 530 F St
second unit, Z's home, the Braunschweig/Melton remodel on D St, Scott
Neeley's renovation of basement space in his D St home, Sheryl and my
partially constructed (602 C St) guest cottage, other cottages on the
C-D St alley, and the site of the proposed accessory unit development
at 539 E St. I believe they discussed other projects along the route.
The idea was to give planners a chance to see the outcome of their
work, learn about the neighborhood, and to discuss R2-CD Zoning and the
Residential Design Guidelines in situ.
Esther contacted me in advance about the plans for the outing
and I offered to make up a packet of information for each of the
planning staff participants. That packet included a copy of:
(i) John Lofland's book, Old North Davis (with the Picture
Map Supplement);
(ii) The ONDNA leaflet; and,
(iii) The color map prepared by John depicting and briefly
describing the high density of recent remodels, additions and accessory
unit construction in the neighborhood.
I briefly met the group when they visited our cottage near the
end of the tour. The planners virtually all expressed appreciation for
the printed materials and the willingness of the various ON households
visited to host and talk with them.
I'm sure the tour was informative for them and ultimately that
it will be good for ON. Next time you see them, please thank Esther
for organizing this and John Lofland for doing much of the work that
made the printed materials so useful with respect to the history,
defining features and current transformations of ON.
