From valerie at vanngroup.com Fri Jul 23 12:40:24 2004 From: valerie at vanngroup.com (Valerie Vann) Date: Fri, 23 Jul 2004 12:40:24 -0700 Subject: [OldNorth] B St Cottages Message-ID: <410169A7.FD37266D@vanngroup.com> I've been through the file on the B St proposal for 4 "Cottages" and our ONDNA meeting last night triggered an association for me: When I was studying architecture at UCBerkeley, we had a woman professor who invariably brought a student project design review down to earth by asking a real world question; here's a typical one" "Where will the garbage cans go?" Recall that in October Davis is switching to new "hands off" trash collection. Each residence will have one 95 gallon and one 2-compartment recycle container (about the size of a 65 gal container). ALL TRASH must be IN these containers with the lid closed. The containers must be placed curb side (in the gutter, not on the curb). In order for the new trucks to pickup the containers (the driver is to be "hands off"), there must be 3 feet clearance each side of each container. Each container is about 3 ft wide. Now look at the B st proposal. This will have EIGHT containers. If placed curbside (on busy B St), if properly spaced they would occupy about 50 feet of curb/parking. On the Alley side, the parking stretches across the entire back lot line, 5 spaces wide, with tandem spaces, covering the entire back open space. So where will the cans end up? In the interior courtyard? out in the front yard? lined up along side setback lines? ?? Valerie Vann
