[OldNorth] New Trash Collection -- meet w/ City

Folks,

At a meeting about a month back (mostly about the parking problem), the
issue of the discontinuation of alley service came up. Someone from Old
North offered the suggestion of using places along the alleys that *did*
have enough width for the mechanical arm as places where neighbors could
roll their carts to. This is not the only solution, but one probably worth
considering.

I e-mailed Bob Weir (head of Public Works) a follow-up question yesterday
and he responded offering that he and/or Sue Gedestad of PW would come to
Old North and meet with us on the issues.

Anyone interested? We could pick a late afternoon / early evening time in
the next week or so...

Z

Z: Sue Gedestad and I are working with DWR to make all our garbage
dreams come true. What we've done and continue to do in those areas
that have special circumstances and concerns is come out (with or
without sample carts) and chat with folks at their locale. If you want
to give me a date and time we can make arrangements with DWR. We're off
on Monday but other than that we'll try and work with whatever schedule
you give us. Thanks, Bob.

Bob,

Who should I talk to about that idea that came up in the meeting some
weeks
back for maintaining alley trash service? There is still quite a lot
of
concern in the neighborhood about the discontinuation of alley
service.

You'll recall that the problem is that the alleys are narrow and the
magic
mechanical arm needs some wide clearance that the 15' right-of-way
doesn't
provide. The problem with specifying "curbside" placement as an
alternative
is that there is precious little curb available given that there are
no
curb-cuts and the curbs pack up very early with students parking.

The solution that somebody proposed was that along each alley (serving
up to
20 homes), one or more group locations could be provided by willing
homeowners at locations where buildings or fences provide, say, 25'
clearance, and that homeowners could take their carts to these
locations.
Presumably this would be reserved in the form of an easement granted to
the
City.

So, who's in charge of fine-tuning the new trash/recycle can service?

Z Smith
