THIS DAY IN HISTORY: 1666 - Shah Jahan, a descendant of Genghis Khan and Timur, died at the age of 74. He was the Mongul emperor of India that built the Taj Mahal as a mausoleum for his wife Mumtaz-i-Mahal.

ACDEMICS/OPPORTUNITIES/EVENTS:
Attention all DHS instrumental soloists this is a note to prepare you for this year's DHS Concerto Competition: The annual DHS Orchestra Concerto Competition will be held Wednesday, January 24, 2018 at 7:00pm on stage in the DHS Brunelle Performance Hall. It is open to all DHS Instrumentalists and free to the public to view. The winner of this competition will be given the honor of performing with the DHS Symphony Orchestra at the Mondavi Center in Jackson Hall at the Wennberg Music Festival on Sunday, April 8, 2018 at 2:30pm as well as a check for $500.00. A sign-up sheet and informational flyer are now on the window of the computer lab in PA-3. It is important to start to plan for this event now and begin preparing your solos ASAP. Enjoy a delicious dinner, signing and dancing at the 30th annual DHS Jazz Choir Cabaret - the choir's most elaborate production and largest celebration of the year. Dinner shows will be held Saturday, Feb. 10 and Sunday, Feb 11 at Emerson Junior High. A final show-only performance will be held on Saturday, Feb 17 at Brunelle. Attention Graduating Senior and Senior Parents! Have you purchase your grad night tickets yet? You are running out of time for the discounted price. PSAT scores are now available to pick up in the Career Center.
Parking Lots and Lockers: Students, please remember that parking lots are off limits during break, passing periods, and class time. If you are in need of a locker, there are still plenty of lockers available. Please come to the attendance office and request a locker. Remember to bring a lock!
CLUBS:
Hey Davis High! Are you looking to make a difference at our school? Want to lead preparations for Winter Ball or Prom? Be the liaison to the School Board? Then apply for the ASB office! Applications are in ASC Student Government room and are due by Jan 23 to the office.
Come audition for the spring play "The Laramie Project: Ten Years Later"! This is a play with a social justice message, about the lasting effects of a hate crime. Auditions begin January 23rd at 4pm in P-11, and continue until the 26th. See you there!
Please come to P-14 at lunch on Wednesday to hear Qais Badran (an exchange student at Da Vinci Charter Academy) speak about his life growing up in an Arab village in Israel. Qais will have a slideshow and his remarks will focus on his unique experiences. You are welcome to bring your lunch and eat while you listen to the presentation.
Register for the National Honor Society! We will be outside S-12 at lunch from January 22nd to February 22nd. Bring 5 dollars and a transcript from last semester. Active members should also bring an hours sheet. We look forward to seeing you there!
Spoke Literacy and Art Magazine is now accepting submissions for its spring issue. The submission deadline is March 2nd and the theme is Home. Interested in learning about how sugars play an important part in shaping biological processes? Come to Dr. Mariana Barboza's talk, "The Science of Sugars", hosted by the DHS Science Café and learn about glycobiology and the life of a scientist. This Wednesday the 24th at 2:45 in S-9.
CAREERS:
Join a group of DHS students as we answer questions about college and learn "HOW TO PLAY THE COLLEGE GAME" provided in a partnership between Sacramento City College and Davis Senior High School at The Career Center January 24th @ 2:40pm. Topic of The Month is: Stress Management.
Juniors interested in learning what it's like to be an FBI agent can now apply for the FBI Teen Academy held on Friday, March 23at the FBI headquarters in Roseville. At the academy, students will learn about FBI careers, the types of cases the FBI investigates, hidden dangers of social media, and how to maintain a healthy lifestyle free of crime, drugs, gangs and violence. Deadline to apply is February 22. Come to the Career Center for more information.
Volunteers are needed for Pioneer Elementary school's 4th - 6th grade homework club on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:00 - 4:00 p.m. Come to the Career Center for information on how to sign up.
It's College Tour time! The City of Davis is offering its annual So-Cal Safari College Tour trip for high school students. Colleges on the tour are UC Santa Barbara, UCLA, San Diego State, CSU Long Beach and UC Irvine. The trip will take place March 26-29. Cost is $520, which includes transportation, college tours, breakfast, dinner and hotels. Come to the Career Center for more information.
