THIS DAY IN HISTORY: 1836 - Charles Darwin returned to England after 5 years of acquiring knowledge around the world about fauna, flora, wildlife and geology. He used the information to develop his "theory of evolution" which he unveiled in his 1859 book entitled The Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection.

TODAY: Attention NHS members! There will be a NHS meeting today in S-12. We will be going over important information about NHS as well as announcing new volunteer opportunities. We hope to see you there!

Boys JV soccer informational meeting will be held on Monday October 9th at 6:00 pm in the Davis High Library. This meeting will provide players and parent's information regarding upcoming tryouts for two possible boys JV teams. Season information will also be given about practices/ games and expectations of the players. It is very important that you attend this meeting if you plan on trying out for Boys JV Soccer.
Hey Blue Devils: October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, which is an annual campaign to raise awareness of the disease! Come support girls Volleyball in their DIG PINK night, Wednesday October 4th vs. Grant. Show your support for the cause by wearing your best Pink outfit!!
ACADEMICS/OPPORTUNITIES/EVENTS:
DSHS will offer the PSAT/NMSQT on Saturday 10/14!! The cost is $24.00. There are NO Refunds and no transfers. Sales end 10/3. There are a limited number of tests available. If you feel this is a financial hardship, please contact your counselor immediately. A PSAT/NMSQT Student Guide containing further information regarding the test, scholarship, and sample questions is available to any student who purchases the test. Come to the Testing Coordinator office in the admin office for a copy.
Juniors only: Online purchasing is available 9/5-10/3 @ dshs.djusd.net
Sophomores: Online purchasing is available 9/18-10/3 @ dshs.djusd.net and is subject to availability.
In-person sign-ups will be held during lunch only, 9/25-10/3 at the Finance Office outside window.
Students or parents can pay in person via credit card, cash or check payable to Davis High School or DHS.

Are you taking the November 7th SAT? Starting October 2nd, join DSH After-hours Library program, College Board and Khan Academy to prepare for the exam. Every Wednesday evening from 5-7:30 pm and Saturday morning from 10am-12pm join a cohort of students in our own DSH Library. See you there!
Support the Arts at DHS by joining the Brunelle Theater Student Usher Program. Earn volunteer hours, gain customer service skills, and see performances for free. Just attend one training, either Tuesday Oct. 3rd at 3:45pm OR wed. Oct. 4th at 2:45pm in the lobby of the theater, and you'll be eligible to usher some of the over 125 performances and events held in the Brunelle each year. Come see how you can be involved! All are welcome! No experience necessary!
Interested in going to Costa Rica during spring break? Information will be given about the trip on Friday, October 6 at lunchtime in Mr. Williams's classroom (P14).
ON-CAMPUS JOB: The lunchtime Food Truck is seeking two students to work during lunches. They would be paid AND receive free lunch. A California ServSafe Food Handler card is required. Volunteer opportunity at Holmes Jr. High: Marci Montanari, counselor, is looking for three kind-hearted students to assist her in developing a program on mistreatment to present to junior high students. Seniors, Prestige Photography will be on campus on Friday, November 3rd, 2017 to take senior photos. If you have not taken your senior photos please make sure to let Marlen Cabrera, VP Secretary know right away. If you want to appear in the senior section of the yearbook, you must take your senior photo through Prestige. The cost is $20 if you wish to purchase proofs and select your yearbook photo, or free if you do not wish to purchase proofs.

CLUBS:
The new DHS Philosophy Club's first meeting will be on Wednesday, October 4th at lunch in room P-22. Come to take your first step on an intellectual journey, during which you will spot fallacies in political speeches and discuss liberty, ethics, and morality in a peaceful, philosophical environment, as well as get a sneak peek into college philosophy!
The first ultimate Frisbee Club will meet this Thursday at lunch in N-1A. This club will provide an opportunity for students to learn and play ultimate Frisbee together, and is open to anyone. No experience necessary.
Hey Decathletes! The late registration for academic Decathlon is this Tuesday. In T-3 during lunch. Please bring your signed cover letter and register online!
Do you like playing video games? Gamer's Society is a new club where you can play Super Mario games or battlefield. Come every Wednesday after school from 2:30 - 3:30 to P-21 to have fun! Bring your friends too!
CAREERS:
CABIN LEADERS are needed for Montgomery Elementary's Walker Creek trip from November 27- December 1. Come to the Career Center for an application.
Are you interested in being a Walker Creek CABIN LEADER? If so, cabin leaders are needed for Pioneer Elementary's Walker Creek trip December 4-8. Cabin leaders must be a positive role model for kids, be a leader and enjoy being in nature. Come to the Career Center for an application.
Colleges visiting the Career Center this week are Yale, Columbia, Tufts and Syracuse. Come to the Career Center for more information and a list of upcoming college visits.
Tutors are needed for Pioneer Elementary school 4th-6th grade after school program starting October 1. Tutors will help elementary students with their homework. Come to the Career Center for more information.
