THIS DAY IN HISTORY:    2002 - The exhibit "In the Spirit of Martin: The Living Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr." opened at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History. More than 100 artists supplied the collection of 120 works of art.

ACADEMICS:  AP exams are available for purchase in the Webstore now!  $98 per test.  Online and in-person sales: now until 2/28 @ https://BlueDevilOnlineStore.myschoolcentral.com.  In-Person: DHS lunch time only at the Finance Office outside window.  If you are in need of financial assistance, please contact your counselor.

Are you a Latino student wanting to earn a college degree?  If so, you should attend the annual Steps to College Fair to learn about college opportunities and financial aid available to Latino students. The event will take place on Saturday, February 4 from 8:00 - 3:00 at the Consulate General of Mexico in Sacramento.  Come to the Career Center for more information.

Are you interested in biology?  If so, you may want to take the USABO Open Exam in February.  The USABO Open Exam is a 50-minute multiple choice exam available to all high school students.  It focuses on animal and plant anatomy and physiology, cell biology. Genetics and evolution.  Students who qualify could represent the United States in international competition. OPPORTUNITIES/EVENTS/MISCELLANEOUS:  Check out the amazing talented students at the 2017 Davis High Idol.  Preliminary rounds are Friday, Jan. 20th and Saturday, Jan. 21st at 7:00 pm. With the final round continuing on Saturday, January 28th at 7:00 pm at the Brunelle Theatre.  Tickets are on sale in the ticket office at lunch this Friday or at Watermelon Music until Jan. 20th.  Tickets are $8 in advance and $10 at the door for the preliminary rounds and $10 in advance or $12 at the door for the final round.  We also have a special price for packages of 3 tickets for all 3 nights at $25.  Come support these incredible singers!


If you're interested in pursuing a career in business or healthcare, come to the Career Center on Tuesday, January 17 at lunch to hear a Cambridge Junior College representative discuss their business and healthcare career training programs.

Do you want to volunteer?  If so, Yolo County Supervisor Don Saylor needs volunteers to help set up his annual "Soup's On" community fundraiser from 3:30 - 5:00 on Thursday, January 26 at St. James Church.  Come to the Career Center for more information.

It is time to sign up for this month's free Financial Literacy class that will take place in the Career Center on Friday January 20 at lunch.  Pizza will be provided!  The Yolo Federal Credit Union, in partnership with the PTA, will discuss "Identity Theft and Debit and Credit Card Fraud." The class is limited to 30 students, so sign up soon in the Career Center.

Come audition for "Standing on Ceremony, The Gay Marriage Plays" the DHS drama department's winter play.  It's an edgy new play that celebrates the gay community and highlights important issues.  Information meeting January 17 @ 4:00 and auditions are January 18th and 19th at 2:45 in P-11.

CLUBS:  Wanted: A few good chess players! North Davis Elementary -- just down the street from DSHS -- is starting a chess club and is looking for high school students to serve as assistant coaches. The Chess Club will meet on Wednesdays from 1:30-3:30, with actual chess beginning at 1:50. The "season" will last January 25th-end of March or so.  We have a main coach, just need some helpers to watch over games and give tips to the kids. The kids will be all ages up to 6th grade. If you're interested in helping to start this club, please contact North Davis parent Bobbi Avery at bobbiavery at gmail.com.
