THIS DAY IN HISTORY: 1865 - U.S. Secretary of State William Seward issued a statement verifying the ratification of the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. The amendment abolished slavery with the declaration: "Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction."

ATHLETICS:
Attention boys in grades 9-12 interested in DHS Boys Volleyball this spring:  there will be some pre-season Open Gym opportunities coming up.  The first open gym will be Dec. 21 & 22 4-6pm. ACDEMICS/OPPORTUNITIES/EVENTS:
Attention all DHS instrumental soloists this is a note to prepare you for this year's DHS Concerto Competition: The annual DHS Orchestra Concerto Competition will be held Wednesday, January 24, 2018 at 7:00pm on stage in the DHS Brunelle Performance Hall. It is open to all DHS Instrumentalist and free to the public to view. The winner if this competition will be given the honor of performing with the DHS Symphony Orchestra at the Mondavi Center in Jackson Hall at the Wennberg Music Festival on Sunday, April 8, 2018 at 2:30pm as well as a check for $500.00. A sign-up sheet and informational flyer are now on the window of the computer lab in PA-3. It is important to start to plan for this event now and begin preparing your solos ASAP. Feeling stressed out and anxious about finals? Practicing mindfulness helps to feel calmer, more connected, and generally happier. Regularly practicing mindfulness has the added benefit of improving working memory and increasing focus. Mindfulness training will be held in at a special time this week today in room )-5 after 7th period from 3:45 to 4:15. For more information contact Ms. Tabor in O-5.

PSAT Scores: Online scores are now available at https://studentscores.collegeboard.org/ , from 12/14 to 1/31/18. Paper scores reports will be available late January.
Davis Parent University - Dan Siegel (The Yes Brain) event Jan 10, 2018
DPU's January 10, 2018 event with Dan Siegel, MD, New York Times bestselling author of The Yes Brain, at DHS' Brunelle Hall, is currently sold out.  Ticket holders should arrive no later than 6:45pm, to guarantee their seat. Walk-ins are welcome and will be seated on a first-come, first-served basis starting at 6:50pm.  In past lectures, all walk-ins have been accommodated.  We hope to see you there!

LICENSCED THERAPY DOGS ARE COMING TO DSHS!   With Finals Week and the holiday season upon us, we all might need some unconditional love!  If you're in the need of some canine affection then please come to the Dance Room (door facing the P-wing and N-Wing courtyard) on THURSDAY, December 21st.  The dogs will arrive on campus right before the break between 3rd and 5th period finals - all are welcome at this time (10:15-10:35).  The dogs will be in the Dance Room for the entire 5th period final.  Thank you to the volunteers from Lend-a-Heart organization in Sacramento for bringing their pets (dogs will always be leashed with their owner).

Pizza lover? Come support the symphony for the NY Carnegie Hall tour fundraiser at Blaze Pizza on Wednesday, December 20 from 4:30pm - 7:30pm. Remember to show your flyer when you order your pizza!
CAREER:
ATTENTION JUNIORS AND SENIORS:  The Davis Chamber of Commerce will host a Job Readiness Fair on Wednesday, January 17 from 3:00 - 5:00 in the Brunelle Theater.  Come to the Fair to get expert advice on exploring your future career path, meet with local businesses about job opportunities, get resources to prepare you for your next job, learn interview skills, find out how to create a resume, and much more!  There will be free swag and raffle prizes!  Come to the Career Center to find out how to sign up for this fun and informative event!
