Attn: DHS Spring Athletes! Bring your sports physical packets to the Sports Paperwork Night on Tuesday, Feb. 2 from 6-8pm in the DHS North Gym lobby or to the Athletics Office during school hours to receive your Athletic Clearance Card for tryouts. If you participated in a Fall or Winter DHS sport, you still need to pick up a clearance card to try out for your spring sport but do not need to redo the entire packet!
Athletes interested in participating in DHS Boys Volleyball, there will be pre-season weight lifting Monday & Wednesday 4:00-5:30pm at the DHS weight room and continuing until tryouts on Feb 8th. JV Girls Soccer Conditioning & Tryouts: Conditioning February 2-4 from 4-6pm at DHS soccer field for 9th and 10th graders. (Bring running shoes, cleats, water and athletic clearance cards). ACADEMICS/CAREERS/OPPORTUNITIES: Applications are now available to seniors interested in giving a speech during the 2016 Graduation Ceremony. Please ask Ms. Carmen Schnathorst for a Graduation Speech Application. The application and typewritten speech are due April 1, 2016 by 4p.m. Finalists will be invited to a live audition the week of April 11, 2016. Speakers will be chosen and notified by April 22, 2016.
If you are interested in attending Sacramento City College or American River College next fall, you should attend their free Saturday enrollment events. Representatives at each school will guide you step by step through the enrollment process. It makes applying easy! Space is limited, so sign up soon! Come to the Career Center for information on how to register for the Saturday sessions.
Attention AP Students: AP exams are available for purchase in the Webstore now! $97 per test. No refunds, so purchase carefully. Stay tuned for more information, including dates for in person sales in March.
Juniors interested in learning what it's like to be an FBI agent can now apply for the FBI's spring 2016 Sacramento FBI Teen Academy. The academy takes place on March 18 at the Sacramento FBI field office headquarters. Students will participate in interactive FBI related classes and take part in hands-on experiences. Deadline to apply is February 12. Come to the Career Center for more information.
SOPHOMORES and JUNIORS: Would you like to do research at UC Davis this summer? The UC Davis Young Scholars Program offers a six-week summer research opportunity in biology and the natural sciences for high achieving high school students June 19-July 30. Students will stay in a UC dorm and conduct research, participate in lab work, go on field trips and earn 5 units of university credit. Applications are due March 17. Come to the Career Center for information about the program, fees, and financial assistance.
If you are a junior boy or junior girl interested in government, come to the Career Center to apply for the American Legion Boys State and Girls State all-expense paid summer programs. Students will actively participate in all phases of creating and running a working government. Those who apply must be strong academically, have leadership skills and an interest in community and government. Deadline to apply is February 12. Applications are available in the Career Center.
Calling all singers, dancers, actors and performers! Come be a part of A Tribute to Tony Fields! You'll have a blast with fun songs chosen by the cast and choreographers. An informational meeting is on Wednesday, February 3rd at 3:00 in P-11. See you there!
Attention all past and present chemistry enthusiasts! Dates for the 2016 Chemistry Olympiad sponsored by the American Chemical Society have been announced. It will be given on March 19 at Sacramento City College, beginning at 9:00 am followed by a nitrogen ice cream party. See Mr. Van Muyden in Room S-9 if you are interested. The registration deadline is February 5th.
CLUBS: Interested in learning how to fly a plane? Then come to Aviation Club this Tuesday in N-3. We will be having a pilot from United Air Lines speak about his career. Hope to see you there!
Interested in astronomy? Did you know that astronomers at Cal Tech might have found a ninth planet 1 to 10 times the mass of Earth? Join the Astronomy Club to find out more interesting astronomical anomalies. We will be meeting in Room S-2 on Tuesday at lunch.
Hallo and Wilkommen! The German Club is meeting Tuesdays at lunch in N-2, Ms. Hamrick's room. If you are interested in playing German games, exploring German culture and eating delicious German pastries, feel free to come on by!
