THIS DAY IN HISTORY:  1797 - Andre-Jacques Garnerin made the first recorded parachute jump.  He made the jump from
a hydrogen balloon at 3,200 feet above Paris and survived.

DHS Girls Basketball will be holding their annual Lady Blue Devil Basketball Camp.  If you are in grades 4th through 8th
and interested in basketball, we'd love to see you out on the courts with us October 25th - 26th from 12:00-4:00.  Please

TODAY:    Women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math Club is meeting today, Wednesday at lunch in Room N-
7.  There will be treats!

Freedom From Hunger will be holding a shoe drive on October 22nd and October 29th from 8:00-8:45 am in L-21 (Ms.
Neagley's room).  Bring in your gently-used shoes and get a free Noah's Bagel.  Also, receive CSF, NHS and Key Club
volunteer minutes for each pair of shoes you bring!

ACADEMICS: Want to compete against other California schools for intellectual dominance and glory?  Then Academic
Decathlon is for you!  There will be a meeting this Friday at lunch in L-20; don't miss out!

Math homework looking impossible?  Got a biology test coming up?  Come to Mr. Van Muyden's room, S-9 at lunch for
math and science tutoring.  MAST is open Monday through Thursday to help!

Are you interested in attending Sac City College?  If so, Sac City is hosting a Preview Night on Thursday, October 30 from
5:00 - 7:30.  Come to the event to learn about degree and certificate programs, financial aid, getting into community
college and take a tour of the Sacramento campus.  Come to the Career Center for more information

MISCELLANEOUS:  Attention Juniors!  Global Glimpse is holding a student meeting this Thursday at lunch in the career
center.  Any juniors interested in going to Nicaragua or the Dominican Republic as part of this global citizen volunteer
program should attend.  There will be dessert!

Picture retakes are in!  If you had your school picture retaken, you can now come to the Career Center to pick it up.

The City of Davis needs volunteers for the CHIP-in!  Volunteer Clean-up day to be held this Saturday, October 25th from
8:00 am to 12:00 pm at Mace Ranch and Oak Grove Parks.  Volunteers are needed to pick up trash, clean barbeque pits,
clean and paint picnic tables, rake leaves and spread wood chips.  Come to the Career Center for more information.
Seniors?  Want to be rented?  Pick up an application in C-4, all applications are due Friday, October 24th to C-4!

Seniors - The deadline is approaching for senior ads!  Turn in order forms by October 31st to get the early bird price.  Forms are available in P-21,
Mr. Achimore's room.

DHS Student Leaders of Clubs, Booster Groups, ASB:  Monday, October 27 is the deadline for submitting information and
articles for the November 2014 DHS PTA Newsletter.  Please send news, announcements, etc. to the DHS PTA Media
Listserve at DHSPTAmedia at mailman.dcn.org and include your name and a parent/faculty name and contact information
(email address and phone number) in case the newsletter editor has submission questions. The newsletter is generally
available around the 1st of each month and is a great way to inform, notify or enlist parents' help for upcoming DHS
school and student activities.

DO YOU VOLUNTEER?  Girls ages 14 to 17, with strong volunteer project are encouraged to apply for the Violet
Richardson Award, a $1,000 grant from Soroptimist International of Davis.  Priority is given to applicants whose work
focuses on one project that wasn't undertaken to earn a different award.  Download an application at
http://www.sidavis.org/awards and include photos, news clippings and other supporting documents.  Send submissions
(digital only) and questions to Wendy Weitzel at wendyedit at gmail.com. Deadline is Dec. 1.

CABIN LEADERS are needed for North Davis Elementary School's trip to Walker Creek on January 5-9. Cabin leaders must
work well with children, and have an outgoing personality with an enthusiasm for the outdoors. Applications are
available in the Career Center and must be submitted to North Davis by November 5.

If you like airplanes and flying, come to UC Davis University Airport's Annual Open House on Saturday, October 25 from
10-2.  You might win a free flying lesson!  Come to the Career Center for more information.

CLUBS/EVENTS:  Our first blood drive of the year will take place, Friday, October 24 in the south gym.  Giving blood takes
approximately one hour from start to finish and is safe and easy.  To donate blood, you must be at least 16, weigh at
least 110 and be free from cold or flu symptoms for at least 48 hours.  If interested, please sign up on the quad at lunch
this week or at the nurse's office by Thursday, Oct. 23.  Walk-ins are accepted only if you are 18 or older.  For more
information, see Ms. Youtsey, the school nurse.

Mommy has been telling you are special since you were born.  Show off that special talent at DHS Factor.  Pick up an
application in C-4 and turn it in by October 31st.

It's LGBT History month!  Did you know that gay, lesbian and bisexual kids are four times more likely to commit suicide?

The DHS Robotics Team is hosting its first annual Women in Stem Lecture Series on October 25th from 1:00pm-5:00!
Speakers include the CEO of Synergex, UCD professors and a representative from Intel.  Everyone is welcome, admission

Are you an artist?  Do you like to create designs?  The DHS Car Club needs a 2014-2015 Car Club t-shirt design!  The
design could be of a cool car or something you think would look good on our t-shirt.  The winner will receive a $20
Jamba Juice gift card and a DHS Car Club t-shirt.  Electronic or hand-drawn submissions due on Halloween, Oct 31st to
Mr. Thayer, via email (rthayer at djusd.net) or in person in Room O-3.    Questions?  See Mr. Thayer in O-3.  We are
looking forward to seeing your designs!

Where can you meet Little Red Riding Hood and the Wolf, Cinderella and her Prince and Jack with his beanstalk?  At DHS
Drama's fall musical, 'Into the Woods' performed on November 7th, 8th, 13th, 14th and 15th at 7:00 in the IPAB!  There
will be another performance on November 9th at 2:00 pm.  Be careful what you wish for!
