Attention Divers, Grades 9-12! The DHS Diving Team needs you.  An informational meeting will be held on Wednesday, January 29th at 4:00 at UC Davis Schaal Pool.  Interested divers, contact Coach Laurel Abernathy at laurela at pacbell.net.

Attention Spring Athletes! Information about tryouts is posted on the Athletics Office window and on the DHS website. Please note:  the Spring Break for Davis schools does not align with the rest of the schools in our league. Many spring sports WILL have games/matches over our Spring Break.

Sports Paperwork Nights:  Turn in your sports paperwork and get cleared for Spring tryouts! Paperwork nights will be held on Tuesday Feb. 4 & Thursday Feb. 6 from 6-8pm in the North Gym lobby. If you played a Fall or Winter sport, you can also pick up a copy of your clearance card to give to your spring coach.

TODAY:  The first Key Club meeting of the 2nd Semester is today, in S-12 at lunchtime!

Are you interested in Key Club, a fun, international service club?  Already a member?  Come to S-12 during lunch on Monday, January 27th and Friday, January 31st and bring your first semester hours' worksheet.  If you are interested in joining the Key Club, bring $5.00.  Come and join us!

The Career Center has many unclaimed PSAT scores.  If you took the PSAT but have not gotten your score report yet, please come to the Career Center and pick it up.  The Career Center is open from 8:30-4:00 Monday-Friday.

NEW/ONGOING/UPCOMING:  Are you a Latino student wanting to earn a college degree?  If so, you should attend the Steps to College University Fair to learn about college opportunities available to Latino students.  The event takes place on Saturday, February 1 from 8:00-3:00 at the Consulate General of Mexico in Sacramento.  Come to the Career Center for more information.

Tickets on sale now for DHS Jazz Choir Cabaret "Let It Shine!" Tickets are on sale now for the Davis High School Jazz Choir's Cabaret dinner and music extravaganza to be held Saturday, February 8 at 6 p.m. and Sunday, February 9 at 5 p.m. at Emerson Junior High School.  "Let It Shine!" is the theme of this year's show, which will feature songs from award-winning musicals under the direction of William Zinn with choreography by Cara Rains.  A combo from the DHS Jazz Band will accompany the performers.  The evening includes dinner catered by Cracchiolo's, a silent auction, and a raffle.  Tickets are $40 for adults and $20 for students.  A ticket order form with table reservations and entrée selections is available at http://groups.dcn.org/jazzchoir.  A music-only concert will be held Thursday, February 13 at 7 p.m. at the DHS Brunelle Theatre. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students and seniors, available at the door.

Looking for a job?  Don't miss out on this great opportunity to learn skill in applying and interviewing for jobs.  The Job Skills Workshop includes how to: make contacts with prospective employers, prepare for interviews and to increase your chances of getting the job.  The date is Wednesday, January 29, 2014, 3:30 pm - 6:00 pm.  at the Veterans' Memorial Theater, 203 E. 14th St.

 DHS Jazz Choir is an auditioned singing and dance group with 41 members. Proceeds from Cabaret will help fund the group's trip to Chicago for a performance competition. For more ticket information, contact Gayle Murray mgmurray at aol.com or Lisa Papagni at ldpapagni at gmail.com.

SENIORS: Visit the Front Desk at break or lunchtime to check the spelling on the diploma order list.  The deadline is February 7, 2014 to make any adjustments, if needed.

UC Davis is offering their annual COSMOS four-week summer program for high achieving math or science students.  Students live on campus and attend classes in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) related field.  Applications are due February 22.  Come to the Career Center for information about the program, fees, financial assistance and how to apply.

The Davis Homeless Shelter needs your help!  Throughout January, DHS is collecting items for the Davis Homeless Shelter.  Items needed are soap, shampoo, lotion and canned food.  There is a drop-off bin for donations in the Front Office and be sure to check postings around school for more information.

SOPHOMORES AND JUNIORS: Would you like to do research at UC Davis this summer?  The UC Davis Young Scholars Program offers a six-week summer research opportunity in biology and the natural sciences for high achieving high school students.  Applications are due March 21.  Come to the Career Center for information about the program, fees, financial assistance and an application.

It's time to sign up for the Chemistry Olympiad!  The proposed date is March 22 at Sacramento City College.  If interested, please see Mr. Van Muyden in Room S-09.  There was a great turnout last year at the local examination and during the liquid nitrogen ice cream party.  Two Mira Loma High School students represented the United States of America in the International Chemistry Olympiad and received a silver medal for a superb performance.  Let's compete with Mira Loma!

Juniors and Seniors: Bank of America is offering their Student Leaders' summer program for juniors and seniors.  This is an opportunity for you to work as a paid intern at a local nonprofit, attend a weeklong Student Leadership Summit in Washington DC, and develop leadership and career skills.  The deadline to apply is January 31, 2014.  Go online to bankofamerica.com/studentleaders or come to the Career Center for more information.

GRAD NIGHT INFORMATION: Grad Night Tickets can be purchased online through the Davis Grad Night website at http://groups.dcn.org/davisgradnight/tickets.  A form can also be downloaded from the website and mailed with a check.  Ticket prices are $90. through May 31, 2014.  The price will increase to $110. at the door.  Scholarship tickets are available through school counselors.  KINDERGARTEN PICTURES NEEDED: After you have purchased a ticket, please submit a kindergarten picture taken by a professional photographer for the "Kinder Wall" at Grad Night 2014.  We would prefer the portrait taken by the school.  If that is not possible, please send a good quality picture that is comparable of your child when they were in kindergarten.  Good quality copies are OK.  If you want the picture returned, please provide a self-addressed, stamped envelope.
