THIS DAY IN HISTORY:  1986 - President Reagan signed legislation making Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday a national holiday to be celebrated on the third Monday of January.

ATHLETICS:  Attention Golfers!  There will be an informational meeting for new and returning players and their parents interested in playing for the Blue Devil golf team this spring. Attention athletes and parents interested in joining the Davis High School Track and Field Team.  There will be a mandatory informational meeting on Wednesday, January 15th in the DHS library.  The meeting will begin at 6:00 pm.  At the meeting, Coach Elliott will discuss expectations, distribute necessary paperwork, answer questions and provide general information about the team. Attention Spring Athletes! Information about tryouts is posted on the Athletics Office window and on the DHS website. Please note:  the Spring Break for Davis schools does not align with the rest of the schools in our league. Many spring sports WILL have games/matches over our Spring Break.
Sports Paperwork Nights:  Turn in your sports paperwork and get cleared for Spring tryouts! Paperwork nights will be held on Tuesday Feb. 4 & Thursday Feb. 6 from 6-8pm in the North Gym lobby. If you played a Fall or Winter sport, you can also pick up a copy of your clearance card to give to your spring coach.
TODAY: Hey amazing Ag kids!  The last FFA activity of the semester is today, Wednesday, January 15.  We will hang out, eat and watch a movie.  Come on down to O-1A at 6:00 to have a fantastic FFA time!  See you there!
If you are a junior boy or junior girl interested in government, come to the Career Center to apply for the American Legion Boys State and Girls State all-expense paid summer programs.  Participants will actively participate in all phases of creating and running a working government. Those who apply must be strong academically, have leadership skills, and have an interest in community and government. Boys State and Girls State will take place in June.  Deadline to apply is January 15.  Applications are available in the Career Center.
The Healthcare Careers and Teen Health Awareness Clubs invite all students and staff to come learn about a career in Physical Therapy and find out what 'RICE' is.  Today, January 15th in the Career Center Conference Room at lunchtime, David Harrington, a physical therapist from Kaiser Vacaville Medical Center will come speak about his career, discuss common joint injuries in high school students, teach us the recommended "RICE" treatment for any sports injury and show us how to do a knee exam.  Healthy lunches are provided!
NEW/ONGOING/UPCOMING:  UC Davis is offering their annual COSMOS four-week summer program for high achieving math or science students.  Students live on campus and attend classes in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) related field.  Applications are due February 22.  Come to the Career Center for information about the program, fees, financial assistance and how to apply.
SENIORS: Visit the Front Desk at break or lunchtime to check the spelling on the diploma order list.  The deadline is February 7, 2014 to make any adjustments, if needed.

SOPHOMORES AND JUNIORS: Would you like to do research at UC Davis this summer?  The UC Davis Young Scholars Program offers a six-week summer research opportunity in biology and the natural sciences for high achieving high school students.  Applications are due March 21.  Come to the Career Center for information about the program, fees, financial assistance and an application.
The Career Center has many unclaimed PSAT scores.  If you took the PSAT but have not gotten your score report yet, please come to the Career Center and pick it up.  The Career Center is open from 8:30-4:00 Monday-Friday.

DHS Valentine's Day Flower Sales will take place January 15 - 17th in the quad at lunchtime only.  Flowers will be delivered on Valentine's Day, February 14th during 1st period.
The DHS Cancer Society Club would like to thank everyone who donated to the holiday toy drive.  Approximately   $200. worth of toys were donated to the UCD Children's Hospital!
SENIORS: This is the time of year to apply for financial aid for college!  To apply for federal and state financial aid, you need to complete the FAFSA by March 2.  Come for the Career Center for financial aid information!
Attention AP Students: AP Bulletins with information on upcoming AP testing and sales are being handed out in your classes starting today!  AP sales through the Webstore begin Monday, February 3rd!  Students in need of financial assistance, please see your counselor.
We want you for the 2014-2015 executive board!  Pick up an application for an elected position today in C-4 and turn it in completed by January 17th!
It's time to sign up for the Chemistry Olympiad!  The proposed date is March 22 at Sacramento City College.  If interested, please see Mr. Van Muyden in Room S-09.  There was a great turnout last year at the local examination and during the liquid nitrogen ice cream party.  Two Mira Loma High School students represented the United States of America in the International Chemistry Olympiad and received a silver medal for a superb performance.  Let's compete with Mira Loma!
DHS Orchestra Program Placement Auditions will be held in the Music Building Room PA-3 from March 3rd - 7th.  Check the Music Room for sign-up sheets with times and requirements. Need help applying for a job?  The City of Davis is holding its free Job Skills Workshop on Wednesday, January 29 from 3:30-6:00 pm in the Veteran's Memorial Center Theater.  Participants will learn skills to prepare for, apply and interview for jobs and how to make contact with prospective employers.  Come to the Career Center for more information.
The City of Davis is looking for talented students to participate in a Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. celebration from 11:00 to 1:00 on January 20. Juniors and Seniors: Bank of America is offering their Student Leaders' summer program for juniors and seniors.  This is an opportunity for you to work as a paid intern at a local nonprofit, attend a weeklong Student Leadership Summit in Washington DC, and develop leadership and career skills. GRAD NIGHT INFORMATION: Grad Night Tickets can be purchased online through the Davis Grad Night website at http://groups.dcn.org/davisgradnight/tickets.  A form can also be downloaded from the website and mailed with a check.  Ticket prices are $90. through May 31, 2014.  The price will increase to $110. at the door.  Scholarship tickets are available through school counselors.  KINDERGARTEN PICTURES NEEDED: After you have purchased a ticket, please submit a kindergarten picture taken by a professional photographer for the "Kinder Wall" at Grad Night 2014.  We would prefer the portrait taken by the school.  If that is not possible, please send a good quality picture that is comparable of your child when they were in kindergarten.  Good quality copies are OK.  If you want the picture returned, please provide a self-addressed, stamped envelope.
