THIS DAY IN HISTORY:  1887 - Thomas Stevens completed the first worldwide bicycle trip. He started his trip in April 1884. Stevens and his bike traveled 13,500 miles in almost three years' time.

Ever wanted to be in a movie?  Auditions for the movie 'HEAT,' a student-run film about the Viet Nam War, will be held January 14 - 16 after school in the library.  Be sure to pick up an audition form in Mrs. Bruch's room P-11 any day at lunch!

PSAT scores have arrived. Pick them up in the Career Center. Bring your photo ID.

The Davis Homeless Shelter Needs YOUR Help!   Throughout January DHS will be collecting items for the Davis Homeless shelter.  The items needed are:      SOAP      SHAMPOO     LOTION      CANNED FOOD

There will be a drop off bin for donations located in the main office.  Check postings around school for more information.

WOULD YOU LIKE TO LEARN MORE ABOUT SACRAMENTO CITY COLLEGE?  If so, a Sacramento City College representative will be in the Career Center on Wednesday, January 8 at lunch to answer all your questions about attending Sac City.  Come to the Career Center if you have questions.
Do you have an idea or a design for a science or engineering project? If so, you should apply for the 2014 Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) THINK Scholars Program. Winners will receive $2,000 in funding, a trip to MIT, mentorship from the THINK team, and advice from MIT professors and industry professionals to complete their project over the spring semester.  Deadline to apply online is January 11, 2014.  Come to the Career Center for more information.

If you are a junior boy or junior girl interested in government, come to the Career Center to apply for the American Legion Boys State and Girls State all-expense paid summer programs.  Participants will actively participate in all phases of creating and running a working government. Those who apply must be strong academically, have leadership skills, and have an interest in community and government. Boys State and Girls State will take place in June.  Deadline to apply is January 15.  Applications are available in the Career Center.
The City of Davis is looking for talented students to participate in a Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. celebration from 11:00 to 1:00 on January 20.  If you can sing, dance, perform a dramatic skit, or have other talents, please contact Judith Plank at 530-383-1711 or jpcats at cal.net.  Come to the Career Center for more information.
Attention all Fall Sport ILS students:  your graded ILS coursework is now available for pick-up in the office at the front desk.  Please stop by this week and pick it up.
Juniors and Seniors: Bank of America is offering their Student Leaders' summer program for juniors and seniors.  This is an opportunity for you to work as a paid intern at a local nonprofit, attend a weeklong Student Leadership Summit in Washington DC, and develop leadership and career skills.  The deadline to apply is January 31, 2014.  Go online to bankofamerica.com/studentleaders or come to the Career Center for more information.
JUNIORS:  Would you like to participate in the Rotary Club's all-expense paid Camp Royal youth leadership camp this summer?  The program, held each June in the mountains of Northern California, is leadership-training event filled information; ideas and strategies that will help you become a more effective leader. The deadline to apply is February 28.  Come to the Career Center for more information and an application.
We are pleased to announce that DSHS has successfully submitted 2014 senior class verified GPA information for Cal Grants. This means students do not need to complete the paper GPA verification form to apply for a Cal Grant.  To be considered for a Cal Grant, students must submit the FAFSA by March 2. Come to the Career Center if you have questions.
GRAD NIGHT UPDATE--ATTENTION SENIOR PARENTS/GUARDIANS:  We've extended the deadline. We need a wallet size photo of your student taken by LifeTouch or whoever was the professional photographer at your child's school during their kindergarten year for our "Kinder Wall" at Grad Night 2014.  It needs to be the portrait taken by the school. Although adorable, the photos of your kids on the couch, in the tub, or at their birthday party is not really what we need. In case you have sent in a non-portrait picture, PLEASE SEND IN A PORTRAIT PICTURE NOW!! Good quality copies are okay. If you do not have a professionally-taken kindergarten photo of your student, please send something comparable of your child taken when they were in kindergarten.

Please put your student's name on the back of the photo! Please provide a self-addressed stamped envelopes if you would like the photo returned.
