THIS DAY IN HISTORY:  1792 - U.S. President George Washington signed the Postal Service Act thereby
creating the U.S. Post Office.

TODAY'S BLACK HISTORY MONTH FACT!  Frederick Douglass was an American social reformer, orator,
writer and statesman. After escaping from slavery, he became a leader of the abolitionist movement,
gaining note for his dazzling oratory and incisive antislavery writing.  .  On this day in 1895, Mr. Douglass
passed leaving an incredible legacy.

ATHLETICS:  Attention Spring Athletes! Information about tryouts is posted on the Athletics Office
window and on the DHS website. Please note:  the Spring Break for Davis schools does not align with the
rest of the schools in our league. Many spring sports WILL have games/matches over our Spring Break.

TODAY: Hello DHS Unicyclers!  Have a blast at the DHS Unicycling Club!  We meet today, Thursday at
lunch in N-4!

ACADEMICS/COLLEGE INFO:  AVID is college readiness.  Are you motivated to improve your academic
skills and enjoy collaborating with your peers?  Do you have questions about college admission?  If this
sounds like you, please consider applying for the 2014-2015 AVID Elective Class.  Applications are
available from Ms. Christiansen in N-1 or Mr. Curley in O-4 or in the counseling office.  AVID students
improve our school!

UC Davis is hosting a Financial Aid Awareness Week this week through February 20 on the UC Davis
campus. Financial aid professionals will be available to assist students and parents complete the FAFSA
and DREAM Act applications today, February 20 from 6-8 p.m at the UC Davis Student Community
Center.  Come to the Career Center for more information.

SENIORS:  March 2 is the deadline to apply for FAFSA and Cal Grants.  Don't miss out on getting free
money for college!  If you have any questions about either of these programs, come to the Career
Center this week!

All DHS orchestra placement auditions will be held at Davis High School in the Music Bldg., Room PA-3
March 3rd - 7th.  Check your school music room for sign-up sheets for times and requirements.  SIGN-UP
DEADLINE IS FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 21ST.  Contact Mr. Moreno for any questions.  The final audition
schedule will be posted Monday, February 24th.

CLUBS/EVENTS:  So I think we can all agree that Ms. Swanstrom is a "homie G" and guess what else
starts with a "G?"  That's right, goat and that's what she'll be kissing if you put enough money in her FFA
'Kiss the Goat' jar.  Today is the last day to put money in!  Join the FFA at lunch tomorrow to watch the
winning teacher smooch the smelly goat!

Do you have issues?  Well, the HUB sure does...In fact we have 11 of them!  If you are interested in
photography, graphic art, or web management, pick up an application in O-1 today and help the HUB
make issues for the whole school!

Have nothing to do at lunch next Wednesday?  Well, join the Black Student Union on the quad for music,
face painting, henna tattoos and performances to celebrate Black History Month!  Remember, it's next
Wednesday at lunch on the quad.  See you there!

Join us this Friday in the North Gym from 9:00 to midnight for the Free Barnyard Bash!  What's better
than a free dance with a free photo booth, free food and free boogies?  See you there!

CSF registration is this week!  Bring in your pink sheet, 1st semester report card and $5.00 to Ms.
O'Brien's room, P-13 during lunch to join CSF.  Sign up this week to avoid the later traffic!

Do you know what you want to do after graduation?  Do you want to learn a new trade, start an exciting
career but don't know where to start?  If so, come to the Rotary career Day, Saturday, march 8 from
8:30 am - noon at Giedt Hall on the UC Davis campus.  Trade and business experts will teach students
about business etiquette, teamwork, resume writing, interviewing skills and using social media.  There
will be a skit performed by high school students, discussions about career choices and opportunities to
sign up for job shadowing.  Prizes and pizza provided to participants!  Come to the Career Center to sign
up or email Susanne Rockwell at sgrockwell at sbcglobal.net.

Ever wanted to display your art?  If so, the LEAD class is currently accepting art submissions for the DHS
Expressionfest!  All submissions must be in L-25 by February 27.  Be sure to pick up a form outside L-25.

What are the responsibilities of a High School Principal?  What about a School Board Representative?
Find out by picking up a Youth in Government application in C-4.  Applications are due Friday, February 28th in C-4.

UC Davis is offering their annual COSMOS four-week summer program for high achieving math or
science students.  Students live on campus and attend classes in a STEM (Science, Technology,
Engineering and Math) related field.  Applications are due February 22.  Come to the Career Center for
information about the program, fees, financial assistance and how to apply.

Have you bought your yearbook yet?  Make sure to order your yearbook soon.  There are only a small
number left!  You can confirm your order by checking the list posted in the library's window.

The Davis Homeless Shelter Needs YOUR Help!  Throughout February DHS will be collecting items for the
Davis Homeless shelter.   ITEMS NEEDED:   SOAP    SHAMPOO    LOTION   CANNED FOOD There is a drop
off bin for donations located in the main office.   Check postings around school for more information.
