THIS DAY IN HISTORY: 1883- At exactly noon on this day, American and Canadian railroads begin using four continental time zones to end the confusion of dealing with thousands of local times. Rather than turning to the federal governments of the United States and Canada to create a North American system of time zones, the powerful railroad companies took it upon themselves to create a new time code system leading to the Railroads creating the first time zones.

ATHLETICS:
Hi all...Winter ILS applications are now available in the front office, to the left, on the counter, in 2 trays.  One tray has the applications, and the other tray is for the student to turn in the application once they have made your roster.  Completed applications are due in that turn-in tray by the end of today, November 18th.  Pass this info on to your athletes.
Tomorrow, November 19, 2013 - Parent/Athlete Boys Lacrosse Meeting, 6:30pm - 8:30pm, North Davis Elementary, MPR.
TODAY:
Today, November 18th at lunchtime in the Career Center Kaiser Permanente Pharmacy residents Dr. Wilbur Leong and Dr. Eyoel Tsegay will discuss "Poisons versus Remedies" Differences in Drug leading to the Death of Glee star Cory Monteith. The pharmacists will also discuss their careers. Students, staff, and parents are welcome to attend this talk hosted by the Teen Health Awareness and the Healthcare Careers Clubs.

Our first blood drive of the year is here, today Monday, Nov. 18.  Giving blood takes approximately one hour from start to finish and is safe and easy.  To donate blood, you must be at least 16, weight at least 110 and be free from cold or flu symptoms for at least 48 hours. Walk-ins are accepted only if you are 18 or older.  For more information, see Ms. Youtsey, the school nurse.
NEW/ONGOING/UPCOMING:
Join Chinese Club in room T-3 this Tuesday the 19th for a Chinese movie with English subtitles.

Are your parents ever asking you what you need from the store? Tell them that DHS is collecting items for the Davis Homeless shelter. Please bring new socks, shampoo, conditioner, soap, and deodorant. There will be a drop off bin for items located in the main office. We will collect items now through December. Check posters around school for more details.

It's time for the French Club sponsored French Fact of the day! Did you know that Paris nickname is the "City of Lights"? Paris may be bright, but those "lights" are actually referring to the intellectuals rather than the bulbs. Come to the French Club on Tuesday for food and fun.

Looking for a fun way to help the community? Come join Manos a la Obra in room O-6 where you'll be making friends and helping you community. You're welcome to come every other Tuesday, hope to see there amigos.

Bring your gently worn shoes to school next Wednesday morning on November 20th from 8am to 8:55am and receive a free Noah's bagel. All shoes from the shoe drive will do to STEAC.
Hey DHS! Come to the annual DHS Factor talent show to support your fellow classmates & teachers as they compete against each other for the Grand Prize! The event is on Thursday, November 21st at 6pm in the IPAB. Admission is $5 without ASB and $4 with ASB, see you all there!
Attention 9-12th grade boys interested in playing Davis High Boys Volleyball in the Spring:  Come to a short INFO meeting FRIDAY, Nov. 22, 4:00pm in the small gym at Davis High.  Info about open gym times, tryouts, and the season will be discussed.  Come check it out.  Any questions, email Ms. Crawford.
The next GSA meeting is Friday, November 22nd.  See Kelly Evans or Mr. Wheeler if you have not picked your color of the rainbow for the club's picture that day at lunch.
The Singing Song-Writerz Club is meeting every Wednesday at lunch in room L-20, so come make some music. It will be awesome!
SENIORS:  CSU/UC college applications are due November 30.  If you have last minute questions, counselors will be in the Career Center Tuesday and Wednesday during lunchtime to answer your questions.
SENIORS: submit your senior yearbook quote now! Log on to School Loop and send a "Loop Mail" to "ybook quotes." Quotes must be less than 20 words, school appropriate and must cite the author.

Tickets for the 2014 Davis Grad Night Celebration are now available for purchase online through the Davis Grad Night website at http://groups.dcn.org/davisgradnight/tickets. Don't forget to purchase a ticket for your graduating senior -- prices are $75.00 through December 31, 2013 -- then the price goes up to $90.00.  Remember, scholarship tickets are also available through school counselors.

Girls who volunteer may apply for grant: Girls ages 14 to 17 who volunteer in their community or school are eligible to apply for the Violet Richardson Award, an annual $1,000 grant given by Soroptimist International of Davis.
