March 14, 1950 FBI Debuts 10 Most Wanted-List

On this day in 1950, the Federal Bureau of Investigation instituted the "Ten Most Wanted Fugitives" list in an effort to publicize particularly dangerous fugitives. The creation of the program arose out of wire service news story in 1949 about the "toughest guys" the FBI wanted to capture. The story drew so much public attention that the "Ten Most Wanted" list was given the okay by J. Edgar Hoover the following year. As of 2010, more than 460 of the criminals included on the list have been apprehended or located, 152 as a result of tips from the public. The Criminal Investigative Division (CID) of the FBI asks all fifty-six field offices to submit candidates for inclusion on the list. The criteria for selection is simple, the criminal must have a lengthy record and current pending charges that make him or her particularly dangerous. And the FBI must believe that the publicity attendant to placement on the list will assist in the apprehension of the fugitive. Generally, the only way to get off the list is to die or to be captured. There have only been a handful of cases where a fugitive has been removed from the list because they no longer were a particularly dangerous menace to society.

1. Its College Tour time! The City of Davis is planning its annual So-Cal Safari College Tour for high school students. They will explore six major universities in California to help teens make the important decision about where they would like to apply. Colleges on the tour will be UC Santa Cruz, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, UC Santa Barbara, Pepperdine, University of Southern California and UCLA. The trip will take place the week of April 4-7 during spring break. Cost is $490 which includes transportation, college tours, breakfast, dinner and hotels. Come to the Scholarship and Financial Aid Office or contact the City of Davis Community Services Office for more information. Don't miss this great opportunity!

2. Are you a high school junior interested in pursuing a career in the energy resources industry? Chevron Corporation together with USC's School of Engineering will host an energy resources summer camp for high school juniors at the USC campus in Los Angeles. The program will introduce high school juniors to career opportunities in energy resources fields such as fossil fuels, solar, biofuel, wind, nuclear energy, and information technologies. The camp is free of charge and will take place from June 26 - July 1. Come to the Scholarship and Financial Aid Office for more information.

3. Would you like an internship position this summer? The County of Yolo is offering students age 15-19 internships in local government. Students volunteer at least 5 hours per week in an internship position that matches their future career and college goals. You get to learn about county government and the benefits of public employment, gain new experiences, and meet new people! The program takes place over the summer from June 13-August 4. Come to the Scholarship and Financial Aid Office for more information.

4. SENIORS:  If you're planning to attend UCD, have a minimum GPA of 3.5, and you worked at a job during high school, you may qualify for the $12,029 Beeghly-Merritt Scholarship!  Applications are now available in the Scholarship and Financial Aid Office.  The deadline to apply is April 15, so come to the Scholarship and Financial Aid Office next to counseling to pick up an application!

5. Are you interested in being a CSF Officer? Applications are available in P-13. The deadline to submit an application is Friday, March 18. CSF elections will be held on Friday March 25 at lunch in P-13.

6. The all-district Choral concert is Monday, March 14th at the Brunelle Performance Hall! Come at 7 p.m. to hear awesome music and voices of the Advanced Treble Choir, Concert Choir, Jazz Choir, and Madrigals. Also featured are the Harper and Holmes Junior High and the St. James Choirs. The event is free and open to the public.

7. Attention all public speakers!! The Davis Sunshine Rotary Club will sponsor the 4-Way Speech Contest, this Wednesday, March 16th at 7pm in Room C-3 at the high school. The 1st place winner will receive $200 and a trip to a regional final.  Prizes are $100 for 2nd place and $50 for third. Ask Mr. Curley or any Interact Club member for details. Online registration ends March 15th.

1. Attention Junior boys interested in government! Would you like to attend an all-expense paid work-study camp this summer to help you understand the structure and workings of our government? If so, you should apply for the California American Legion Boys State program. The event will be held on the CSU campus from June 18-25. Those who apply must be strong academically, have leadership skills, and an interest in community and government. Come to the Scholarship and Financial Aid office by March 15th to apply.
