ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY: On this day in 1869, the presidents of the Union Pacific and Central Pacific railroads meet in Promontory, Utah, and drive a ceremonial last spike into a rail line that connects their railroads. This made transcontinental railroad travel possible for the first time in U.S. history.

	*	STUDENTS:  Do you know a DHS Teacher who motivates students to learn, views teaching as an opportunity to serve students, brings dignity to the profession of teaching, demonstrates fairness to all students, supports student thinking and understanding, and through his/her work exemplifies the high ethical codes of the teaching profession.  If so, come to the main office and pick up and complete a Rotarian Teacher Award nomination form and return it to Mrs. Vogel in the Principal's office by Friday, May 14.

	*	Cruz Reynoso, a former California Supreme Court Justice will be speaking in the IPAB on Wednesday, May 19th during lunch. His topic will be immigration law. Remember, no food or drink are allowed in the IPAB.

	*	Davis World Cup 2010, the premier annual AYSO Select Soccer Tournament held in Davis is quickly approaching.  Memorial Day Weekend, May 29th - May 31st, over 150 teams throughout the state will come to Davis and compete.  AYSO needs your help! Join the fun and lend a helping hand.

	*	SENIORS:  Did you apply for a local scholarship?  If so, check the announcement board outside the Scholarship and Financial Aid Office to see if your name is on the list of recipients!

	*	SENIORS:  Have you been the recipient of any scholarships or awards not administered by the Scholarship and Financial Aid Office, including those from the college you will attend in the fall?  If so, please come to the Scholarship and Financial Aid Office and sign the "Outside Award" list.  These awards will be announced at Senior Awards Night, which is scheduled for Tuesday, June 1 at 7:00 p.m. in the Performing Arts Theater.

	*	STEAC "Kids Helping Kids" food/clothing drive May 3 - May 14.   Search through your closets and join in the on-going effort to clothe the needy Yolo County children by dropping off gently worn and clean clothing and shoes at school sites. STEAC is also accepting donations of non-perishable food items.  A STEAC collection box is located in the front office.

	*	Sports Physical Day at Sutter Davis is Saturday, June 5th from 8:30-11:30am at Sutter Family Practice, 2030 Sutter Place Suite 2000. Why wait? Students in grades 7-12 are encouraged to complete their sports physicals this spring at Sutter West Medical Group for the 2010-11 school year. Coaches strongly recommend that you take this opportunity to get your physicals early so that you can be ready to participate in early tryouts. Your $20 donations will benefit the DHS Athletics Department. Sports Physical packets can be picked up at your student's school office or online at www.davisseniorhigh.net <http://www.davisseniorhigh.net> Packets must be completed, signed by a parent/guardian and brought with you on June 5th in order to participate in the clinic. 	*	Seniors planning to go to community college next year should register ASAP to get first priority for courses.

	*	Attention Seniors:  Do you have a teacher that you would like to nominate as an Honorary Guest at this year's graduation?  Please stop by Teri Furlow's desk and pick-up an Honorary Graduation Guest Request by Friday, May 14th

	*	Lake Tahoe Community College is offering it's popular "Intensive Spanish Summer Institute" again this year!  Students can earn units of credit in courses designed to promote the development of fluency in Spanish.  This week-long course is scheduled for August 8-13 and will include all levels of the Spanish language, along with several breakout sessions from cooking to art, dancing and music, history and holidays, family customs and celebrations, etc.  High school students and adults are welcome to apply.  The program fills up fast, so come to the Scholarship and Financial Aid Office soon for more information!
