DAY IN HISTORY



December 14, 1799   George Washington Dies
George Washington, the American revolutionary leader and first president of the United States, died on this day of acute laryngitis at his estate in Mount Vernon, Virginia. He was 67 years old. After commanding the Continental Army to victory in the Revolutionary War, General Washington retired to his estate at Mount Vernon. In 1787 he presided over the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The drafters created the office of president with him in mind, and in February 1789 Washington was unanimously elected the first president of the United States. After serving two terms in office, he retired to his estate in Virginia in 1797 where he died two years later.

REMINDER

1. The annual Chips for Kids (CHP) toy drive, is under way again this year. Please bring in a new, unwrapped toy to the DHS front office where there is a barrel for collection. We will be collecting toys from now until Friday, December 17th. They will be distributed to hospitalized and disadvantaged kids just before the holidays. If you have any questions please call the DHS front desk.

1. Don't forget about the dodgeball captains meeting at lunch tomorrow in C-4. If you want to play on a team this season; a team representative NEEDS to attend this meeting.

2. Hey Interacters! There is a meeting this Wednesday after school in N-16. It will be our last meeting for this year and we will have food and refreshments! Don't forget your secret Santa present and bring your door pass ticket!

3. Hey Key Clubbers! We will be having a meeting this Wednesday in S-12 at lunch. Be sure to come so that you can receive the t-shirts that you've ordered and get updated on events! This is a meeting you will not want to miss.

4. All players who plan on playing football in the upcoming season need to attend a MANDATORY meeting at lunch in the DHS weight room on Thursday, December 16th at lunch.

5. There will be an informational meeting regarding the USA Biology Olympiad this Friday at lunch in Ms. Moriarty's room.

TODAY

1. Cafeteria: Beef dippers with rice, pasta bar, chicken wings with celery sticks and rice, pizza, sandwich.

2. CAML test #3 will be on Tuesday, December 14. This is a chance to get some extra credit for you math class before the holidays. Come to any math classroom at lunch on Tuesday, December 14.

3. Your PSAT results have arrived. Results are available for pick up on Tuesday, December 14th and Wednesday, December 15th in the Large Conference room during LUNCH only! Bring a photo ID.

4. Interested in the Peace Corps and/or West Africa? Come Tuesday at lunch to P-25. Mr. Haws will be presenting his experience in Benin, West Africa, sponsored by The Model UN Club.

5. If you're interested in participating in a photo gallery, please submit your black & white 8 x 10 photos to The Photo Club, room A-4 on December, Tuesday 14. This is THE deadline!!!!

1. Girls in grades 9-12 are invited to participate in DHS Softball pre-season warm ups. Practice your skills at these optional workouts and have some fun! Mondays & Wednesdays: December 20, 22, 27, 29 and January 3, 5, 10, 12. Meet at the DHS Varsity softball field (next to Covell Blvd) from 4:00-5:30pm weather permitting. Spring 2011 team information meeting tentatively set for Friday, January 7 at 4:00pm in the DHS quad. For more information, email George Meagher at

2. The Financial Aid Workshop for seniors and their parents will be held on Tuesday, January 18, 2011 from 7:00pm-8:30pm in the performing arts theater. This time and date is different that what is shown in the student planner. The event had to be relocated because the MPR is no longer available. Seniors will receive invitations to the event during winter break.
