Dear NY trip band parents:
It has come to our attention the district office has made a change to a security measure we had described to you. They are telling us we are not allowed to use painters tape to tape the kids’ hotel room doors shut at night, to ensure they don’t leave their rooms during the night. Tom and Angelo have each used this technique for well over 15 years. The District came to this decision after they had received several complaints. I am not sure of the origin or reasons for the complaints. They also made this deviation without discussing it with Tom or Angelo, and it was a last minute change: we were told about it over breakfast this morning.
The District gave me two reasons why this was done:
1. Taping draws attention to rooms that don’t have adults present. While this may be true, the rooms are dead bolted and have the extra security lock. We (Tom, Angelo, myself and Cynthia) feel it is much more likely that a teenage student may leave their room during the night, versus someone breaking into their room.
2. If the tape is broken, we don't have proof they left the room. While this is technically true, Tom’s and Angelo’s years of experience can provide a valuable starting point for having a conversation with the students to help determine what happened.
I wanted you to get this information ASAP, because I had told you that for your child’s safety we would be taping the rooms shut. If you would like to weigh in on the subject please contact Laura Juanitas:
