Please see the below message from band parent Lloyd, who asked Rob to forward to you all. He is cc?d in this email should you want to contact him directly. Cynthia > Band Parents: > > Hi. My name is Lloyd Kunimoto and I am the parent of a new member of the DHS Symphonic Band (my son is in the 10th grade). I have been concerned about the financial health of the Band program since the start of the school year since it seems that it will be very challenging to raise sufficient funds to cover the cost of the Band program. > > After reading Rob's most recent email and clarifying a few of Rob's comments with him, it seems to me that there is one really fundamental cause of the budget shortfall. It is the large difference in the level of contributions for the basic band program (the band class) and the contributions for the major trips (Disneyland and New Orleans). Essentially, even though the contribution level for the large trips is less than 100%, it is about 80%. In other words, we, the Band Parents have contributed enough to cover about 80% of the cost of these large trips. While there is a shortfall, it is approximately 20% of the cost. At tonight's Band Boosters meeting, I will make a suggestion about how this gap can be closed in a manner that does not solely rely on external fund-raisers. > > The situation with the basic program is much worse. We, the Band Parents, have contributed approximately 40% of the $350 per student that is required to fund the classroom program with instruments, repairs, music and other supplies and expenses that make the Band program a great learning and growth experience (and fun!) for all of our children. If the basic program is underfunded, we are essentially shifting the responsibility for keeping the program strong to future years. At some point, either costs will need to be cut severely, meaning the quality of instruments and music will be compromised, or the future Band Parents will need to take on a much larger expense or raise much more in external donations, to keep the program strong. > > If we, the Band Parents, would make a direct contribution that covers the same percentage of the basic program as we did to cover the Disneyland or New Orleans trips (i.e. approimately 80% of the cost on average, or $280), the funding gap for the basic program will be much smaller and can be closed much more easily with the kinds of fundraising we are currently pursuing. While this level of contribution is not insignificant, it is much less than the contribution for the Disneyland and New Orleans trip, and while these trips are valuable, enriching experiences, I believe we all want a strong band program that provides the foundation for music education for our children. Contributing $280 is a way of saying that we want to sustain the band program so that it can continue to be a great experience for band students today and in years to come. > > If we can close the funding gap for the basic program so that $7,000 or less is needed to fund the program this year, it seems that our current fund-raising effort will be able to cover the balance and we may even be able to put some funds into the "reserve" account to provide a safety margin that can cover shortfalls in future years. > > Thank you for taking the time to read this. I will review these thoughts at tonight's Band Boosters meeting. See you there. > > Lloyd Kunimoto > -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... There were 20 families?present, and our recyclables came to $86!? Even if we do $50 per week as a group, that can be over $1500 for the school year, just by putting out your recyclables!? It's so easy!? But we've only had 6 families sign up so far, and there are over 100 families in band. Let's set a goal of 20 families signing up tonight!?? See below for the original email from Ashley, and here's the link to sign up: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1MyoIA_N5wFQqBBHAc4pzQKxq3TzIIuHiPoCSXgz2-U0/edit?usp=sharing >From Ashley: We all purchase beverages of many types and we all pay at the register for not just the liquid inside, but we also pay a CRV of typically 5-10 cents per container (sometimes more). Why don?t we take that money that we?otherwise throw into our recycling bins?for pick-up every week and donate it to the band!! I have created a spreadsheet where families can sign up to have their recycling picked up (every Saturday at 10:00 am) and also a place where people can?sign up?to collect the donations and take to?Davis Recology Buy Back Program?located at 2727 2nd?St. in Davis. The recycling center will issue a check to each person/family per delivery (they are unable to provide checks in excess of $200 per person) which will in turn need to be cashed in and turned into Band Boosters. ?Here's the link to the sign up list for both donating and picking up: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1MyoIA_N5wFQqBBHAc4pzQKxq3TzIIuHiPoCSXgz2-U0/edit?usp=sharing ? Important details for participation: Please have your clean and rinsed recyclables in a paper sack (or other reusable container) on your front porch by 10:00 am the day of pickup ??????????????? We will be dumping the recyclables into plastic storage containers (provided by the Keffler-Roa family) inside the pickup vehicles so donation containers will stay at the house that provided them A reminder email will be sent out every Friday to those who signed up to donate Start date is Friday?this week ONLY??(PICKUP WILL BE BETWEEN 4-5PM), then it will go to Saturdays. ? WITH THE HOLIDAYS APPROACHING THINK OF ALL THE CANS/BOTTLES/GLASSES YOU MIGHT HAVE TO DONATE!!!! ASK YOUR NEIGHBORS TOO!! ? I have created a?short?list of items that are eligible for CRV and a few items that are not: ? Eligible ANY BEVERAGE WITH CRV LISTED ON THE CONTAINER Glass bottles (beer, soda, etc.) Plastic (water bottles, soda bottles, liters) Aluminum cans (La Croix, soda, beer) ? Ineligible Wine bottles Milk jugs ? If anyone has any questions, please feel free to contact me via email at?ashleykeffler at sbcglobal.net?or by phone/text at 925-818-8957. ? ? Tickets are on sale now for Coconut Grove, March 2, 2019!? This is a fun filled evening of dinner and jazz music and our biggest and most important fundraiser for the entire year for DHS Band Boosters, supporting all the band programs at Davis High School.? This year it will be back at the IDC at Emerson Junior High.?? What is Coconut Grove, you ask?? Coconut Grove was a famous Jazz Club in Los Angeles, during the height of jazz and Hollywood glitz.? We'll be recreating that atmosphere for a fun evening of a nice sit down dinner, mocktails,? live jazz performed by the high school, junior high, and other jazz groups, and a silent auction and raffle.? It will be on Saturday March 2 from 6 pm -9:30 pm at Emerson Junior High.?? Tickets are On Sale Now!?Ticket prices for General and Premium table seating will be going UP on January 1!? (then again on February 1).? So invite your family, friends, and coworkers, and buy your tickets now to save!? ? At the event there will be tables that can seat up to 10 guests to enjoy dinner and the show.?? Ticket pricing: 1. Performer/Volunteer: these are for students who will be performing with a jazz group, or students who are volunteering to work at the event that evening.? The ticket price includes dinner, but it does NOT include a seat at the tables of 10.? (there will be seating off to the side for these students to enjoy their dinner).?? 2. Student (sitting with family): this is for students who wish to be seated at one of the tables of 10 with their family to enjoy dinner and the evening.? If you want your student to be able to sit with you through dinner and the evening (whether or not they are performing or volunteering), this ticket is for them.? Also, this?ticket is for siblings/ friends who are students in the district.?? 3. General: this is for adults attending for dinner and the evening.? You will have a seat at a table, but it is not reserved seating.?? 4. Premium table seating:? These tickets are to reserve an entire table of 10 for you and your guests.? The minimum number to purchase is 10 (so that you are purchasing the entire table).? The reason these tickets cost slightly more: this is a RESERVED table: your table will be waiting for you, and assures that your entire party can be seated together.? Also, this is PREFERRED seating: the tables will be more centered to the stage for your viewing pleasure.?? TO PURCHASE TICKETS OR FOR TICKET QUESTIONS: All ticket sales will be online through the Brown Paper tickets website:?Coconut Grove | | | | | | | | | | | Coconut Grove Brown Paper Tickets - The first and only fair trade ticketing company! | | | You can also find this link on the DHS Band Boosters website:?Davis High School Band Boosters | | | | Davis High School Band Boosters The Davis High School Band Boosters support the activities of the high school bands program | | | A note about ticket prices this year:? every year Boosters usually raises the ticket price slightly, to keep up with rising costs of both running the event and supporting the band programs.? But this year, to ensure accurate ticket sales, we are doing all online purchasing through Brown Paper Tickets.? They will include a small processing fee per ticket, which essentially raises the ticket price that you will see.? So we have decided to keep the actual ticket price the same as last year, so that you, our guests, only see the raise with the processing fee.?? (Price goes up to $51.71 tomorrow) TO PURCHASE TICKETS OR FOR TICKET QUESTIONS: All ticket sales will be online through the Brown Paper tickets website:?Coconut Grove | | | | | | | | | | | Coconut Grove Brown Paper Tickets - The first and only fair trade ticketing company! They will include a small processing fee per ticket, which essentially raises the ticket price that you will see (the fee IS included in the ticket prices mentioned above).? So we have decided to keep the actual ticket price the same as last year, so that you, our guests, only see the raise with the processing fee.??
