As she says at the bottom of her email, contact her with any questions at conniebelkrd at gmail.com ================== Hello Band Families. Last night we held our second band booster meeting of the year and a total of 5 parents attended, outside of the band booster board members, Mr. Slabaugh and Bob the dog. We truly need more parent involvement this year to make all of the wonderful events, festivals, summer trip, concerts, etc. run smoothly. As of now, about 1/5th of band parents have signed up to volunteer for something. I'll be contacting jazz band parents in late October to ask for help driving to upcoming festivals in December and January, as well as help organize the purchase of jazz shirts and ties for this year. Those planning on attending the New York trip this summer can contact Rob Kerner at rvkerner at ucdavis.edu to see how you can support the fundraising efforts needed to make the trip happen this summer, as well as other duties needed along the way. We still need more help organizing for Coconut Grove (the band's largest fundraiser each year) in the early spring, March 3rd 2018. Please contact Sheetal Singh at sheepak at hotmail.com for volunteer opportunities related to Coconut Grove. Cynthia Kerner could use help organizing Rent-A-Band gigs to fundraise for the New York Trip and the band in general. She can be contacted at: cjkerner at sbcglobal.net. We have yet to fill the "9th grader Liason" role this year. We want to get a good influx of students next year and reaching out to our junior high students is a good way to keep students coming and our bands full. Contact me at conniebelkrd at gmail.com or Mr. Slabaugh to volunteer. Bottom line is, the more parents are involved the better your students' experiences will be this coming year. If volunteers do not step up then things get cancelled or done part way and in the end the kids are the ones who get short-changed. Thank you for eveyone who has already stepped up to volunteer and I look forward to having more parents join us this year as we work to make 2017-2018 a great year to be in band at DHS. If you have any questions, contact Connie at conniebelkrd at gmail.com Thank you! -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... This is a cool event! Mr. S Greetings, colleagues! I just wanted to share some information regarding an enrichment opportunity that I initially organized to benefit my kids and the kids of the EGUSD, but am now opening up to the rest of the Cap Section: Wolfpack Music and I are hosting a pair of Honor Band Audition Clinics for winds and brass, featuring the faculty of the CSUS School of Music, and area professionals. The dates are Wednesday, October 11th for brass and saxophones, and October 25th for orchestral woodwinds. The details are outlined on the attached sheet. If you have students interested in attending, please have them sign up on the following Google Form: https://goo.gl/forms/3zWvy6u48cyY1tFd2 In addition, students should plan to bring their instruments, as the wind faculty will be conducting masterclasses ? some faculty may give students supplemental exercises specifically tailored to the audition rep. Additionally, a select handful of students on each instrument will get the opportunity to perform the audition excerpts for the clinicians to coach ? the first 5 students indicating on the Google Form that they would like to play for coaching will get to perform. Attached you will find the information packet for the 2018 CMEA Capitol Section High School Honor Band. Some notes about the packet: "Auditions Made Easy" Link to CMEA-CS HS Audition Page: https://www.bandworld.org/Audition.aspx?eID=187 Please note that this year we will be using "Auditions Made Easy" by BandWorld for mp3 auditions. You can find audition instructions in the attached packet. I would advise that you upload to the site with your auditioning students. This will allow you to ensure their auditions have been submitted as well as screen students who are not quite ready. With the use of this website it is no longer necessary to bring individual CDs to the listening session. If you are unsure if something was submitted correctly email me and I will happily check and confirm. Audition Listening at Rosemont For the audition listening session on Monday, December 4th please park in the front parking lot of Rosemont High School. The rehearsal hall will be open and on your left hand side. I am hopeful to have a laptop cart we can use to access the "Auditions Made Easy" site, but if you can please bring a laptop just in case. At the audition listening I will share the admin log-in for the "Auditions Made Easy" site and directors will split up with laptops as in years past. Applications We are returning to all paper applications. Both the director and student applications are attached in the packet and PDFs will be accessible on the CMEA-CS website. Notes on Trombone and Percussion Audition We replaced some of the All-State excerpt for trombone to avoid passages in tenor clef. Please let your trombone students know that their two excerpts are from different pieces, with the second being from Sonata in F Minor by Georg Phillip Telemann (same piece used for the bass trombone audition, different passage). This year we are bringing back a mallet specialist role in addition to general percussion. Mallet specialists will complete their own audition and DO NOT need to submit a separate general percussion audition. Both will need to submit the scale requirement for mallets. Thank you to the percussionist-directors in our section for your input. We are hopeful this change will encourage more percussionists to audition. SCHEDULE We are returning to the format we used before last year, with Cosumnes River College and Sheldon High School serving as our rehearsal and concert venues. Mr. S Dear Colleagues, The following students will be participating in the Pep Band for the Homecoming Rally on Monday. They need to be released from class at 9:30 so they are able to go to the band room, get their instrument, and head to the North Gym to play for the students entering. At the end of the rally, these same students will be playing as the student exit. They will need to return to the band room, return their instrument and equipment, then head to class. I suspect they will be late to third period by no more than 10 minutes (11:07). Many thanks for your support and assistance. If you have any questions, please email her directly (cjkerner at sbcglobal.net) --------------------------------------- Hello fellow band parents: I'm fundraising for the NY trip in June. An easy way for everyone to help right now is to forward the message below to all of your family and friends asking them to join Amazon Smile, and maybe even post to your Facebook page or whatever social media you like. (I've attached some pics from the band in case you want to use for Facebook, etc). Just sign your name at the end of the message, or personalize it however you want. Lots of people buy from Amazon, this is so easy to do, and it's not asking for any extra money, just what people usually spend. Please forward this today, spread the word as much as possible! Thanks Cynthia _____________________________________________________________ Hello Family and Friends, As you may have heard, next June our Symphonic Band at Davis High School will be performing at the 2018 New York "Sounds of Summer" International Music Festival, culminating in a performance in Carnegie Hall! This is an amazing opportunity for our kids to perform at one of the premier symphony halls in the world. If you live nearby or are adventurous and want to attend our performance, here?s the link for the music festival (details are still forthcoming): https://www.carnegiehall.org/Calendar/2018/6/12/0800/PM/ 2018-New-York-Sounds-of-Summer-International-Music-Festival/ But getting 70 students there will be quite expensive. One of the ways you can help us is by doing something you may already be doing: buying from Amazon! With every purchase you make through smile.amazon.com, 0.5% will be donated to our Band Boosters to help finance the trip. That may not sound like a lot, but if many of us do this it can really add up. *You just need to make sure you log onto smile.amazon.com * (instead of the regular amazon website) Sign in to smile.amazon.com on your desktop or mobile phone browser. >From your desktop, go to Your Account from the navigation at the top of any page, and then select the option to Change your Charity. Or, from your mobile browser, select Change your Charity from the options at the bottom of the page. Select a new charitable organization to support: *Our organization is ?Davis Senior High School Band Boosters?, in Davis, CA.* So as you?re doing your everyday or upcoming holiday shopping, please go to smile.amazon.com and a portion of your purchase price will be donated to the Band Boosters for our trip. I'm working on fundraising for the NY trip, for which we'll need to raise around $30,000. I wanted to give you a heads up on an upcoming fundraiser for which we'll need everyone's help. One of the fundraisers we are calling a No-Show Tea Party. We will have each student send a package to as many friends and family as possible, anywhere in the country. This will include a tea bag, and a written invitation to join our virtual tea party online. They will be directed to a You Tube site where they can enjoy a performance from the Symphonic Band, while enjoying their cup of home brewed tea. Here's the fundraising part: the "invitation" is a letter telling about our band and the trip, and a request for donation. We'll include a pre addressed stamped return envelope to send a donation check, and also let them know about PayPal on the booster website. And of course will let them know all donations are tax deductible. We will provide the letters, but leave the salutation and the signature blank so that your student can personalize each. We are asking each family to prepare 8 letters. There will be instructions on what to do in the package. My plan is to hand out the packages to the students in class on Friday, then their letters to be returned the following week so we can assemble and mail out. The Orchestra did this last year and raised about $8000. My other daughter's ballet company does a similar letter writing campaign, and each year about 25 students raise $8-10,000 this way! So if we have all students participate, this could be really successful. Please let me know if you have any questions. For those that do not know, I am the music conductor of the Santa Rosa Youth Repertory Orchestra for the past 7 years. I have stake in that community and know many who have lost homes. Both friends and students. It?s been a tough few days for them. To help them out in this time of need, I am bringing my truck and 5x8 trailer to Pioneer High School located at 1400 Pioneer Ave. in Woodland Ca. this Friday to collect donations from 7am to 4pm. My vehicle will be located in front of the Administration building and clearly marked. My symphony manager has sent me a list of needs for the community affected. I will work with Matt Payne to get much needed supplies to these families on Saturday. Here is what is most crucial right now: water, breathing masks, NEW bedding, food, pet food, iPhone chargers. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach me at this email or by cell at 916-832-7591. Your support for this community is greatly appreciated! With gratitude. Just as a reminder we need to raise about $17,000 for this trip, and if all traveling kids participate in this fundraiser we hope to raise at least $8,000!!! Any questions please direct to me, thanks!! cjkerner at sbcglobal.net 530-400-7598 Cynthia Sent from my iPhone -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Because I'm never sure about attachments in the listserv, I've pasted the text of the letter as well as included the attachment. As the letter says, please contact Vera Sandronsky (dhsbb.auction at gmail.com) if you can help. -matt ================================= Dear Parents, The Davis High School Band Coconut Grove Team is seeking donations from parents for the Coconut Grove fundraiser, which will be held on Saturday, March 3, 2018. Donations can take many forms, including gift certificates, physical items, cash donations, services, vacation rentals, tickets and sponsorships. The required budget for the 113 students in band this year comes to $56,500, and the school district provides about $23 per student or $2,530 in total. Coconut Grove is the most important annual fundraiser for the Davis High School Bands. The money raised will be used to pay for scholarships, minor travel expenses, festival fees, music instruments and repairs, professional instruction, and substitute teachers that the district does not pay for when a band and director are away. Your contributions for this event are to support the continuation of the excellent DHS Band programs. We are a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization and our tax ID number is 68- 0240002. Please contact Vera Sandronsky at dhsbb.auction at gmail.com to make arrangements to drop off items you wish to donate. Thank you in advance for your generous support!
