The "American Tapestries" program features the music of all American composers, and also has selections which feature various themes of Americana: One for All - Robert Litton an amazing concert fanfare that I commissioned for my CSU, Hayward Wind Ensemble, from then-student Robert Litton. The piece won the H. Robert Reynolds Composition Prize, and Robert Litton now has an active career as a film/TV composer and orchestrator. Simple Gifts; Four Shaker Songe - Frank Ticheli. This piece needs no introduction, as it has become a staple in the band repertoire. Mutanza; Symphonic Variations for Band - James Curnow A major work for wind band and one of two "big pieces" on our program. Composed for the University of Iowa Symphonic Band, "Mutanza" is 16 minutes of inspired symphonic writing, masterful thematic development, and virtuosic music for winds and percussion. American Fanfare - Rick Kirby A wonderfully creative fanfare, based on "My Country 'Tis of Thee" Fantasies on a Theme of Haydn - Norman Dello Joio The second "big piece" on the program. A masterwork in the wind band repertory; an introduction, theme (taken from a Haydn piano work), and three extensive variations or "Fantasies." Composed for Leonard Falcone and the Michigan State University band. The Thunderer March - John Philip Sousa Mrs. Sousa's favorite march! Symphony on Themes of John Philip Sousa; II. After "The Thunderer" - Ira Hearshen The first movement of this epic symphony by Ira Hearshen - slowing down the trio melody from the march, and setting it in the style of the slow movement from Mahler's Third Symphony. Beautifully powerful... Seventy-Six Trombones - Meredith Willson/Leroy Anderson/Jay Bocook Jay Bocook's wind band transcription of Leroy Anderson's arrangement of this iconic piece from Meredith Willson's "Music Man." Anderson pays homage to Willson's stint as the piccolo player in John Philip Sousa's band (before his stint in the New York Philharmonic!) - by superimposing motives and melodies from a number of marches onto Willson's famous tune. The flyer for the concert is attached below. Please print it out, and post it in your band rooms. Admission is free for students up through 8th grade, and high school and college aged students are only $10 (General Admission is $15). If you and your students have not had the opportunity to hear a concert in this magnificent new facility, this will be a special treat! I hope you will pass along my invitation to your students, and join us on October 13th. I have been blessed and humbled by the many well wishes, kind thoughts, outreach, get well cards and presents I have received during my time away. These extremely kind gestures have been very important to me in my recovery. I do want to share with you all that I have lingering health issues following my cancer diagnoses and treatment. I will not be fully "up to speed" for some time, both physically and emotionally, but am well enough to spend time with your wonderful kids, my cherished students. I have sincerely missed you all, but I am climbing the walls at home and I need to regain a sense of normalcy in my life. I also will have many upcoming medical appointments in the future, so please be patient with me during the next several months. Finally, I want to extend a very public thank you to the DHS Band Boosters. They have worked very hard to make sure all band students have had as rewarding a year as possible under these unusual circumstances. One way you could help them serve all band students is by volunteering to help this great organization. Donations and fundraising are necessary and quite appreciated, but we also need people to help do a variety of tasks throughout the year. As the adage goes, "Many hands make for light work" and, coincidentally, we need several hands to help with Homecoming this week (see below). Please sign up on the band boosters email list serve so you can receive information on the latest ways you can help all of the kids in the band program. (Do not send to businesses or professionals, that will be a separate fundraiser coming soon). Now, we understand not everyone will want to partake in this fundraiser, as some will not want to solicit family members.? But we've had families in the past express their pleasure when an unexpected donation came from an uncle, or a parent's prior music teacher.? Also, as you can see from the idea list above, it's not just family you can reach out to.? Even if you can only send 1 or 2 letters, every bit helps.? We get a range of donations from $25-$500, averaging out to about $250 per family that participates.?? If you choose not to participate, please do not just toss the packet.? Anything you do not use, please return back to Mr. S, as we can reuse the envelopes for next year.? Then please consider how else you can help the band, such as volunteering for Coconut Grove, setting up a restaurant fundraiser in town, buying a football square (still happening!) or even perhaps an additional Direct Donation.
