Hi All,

I sent you a flyer about Sunday's Crocker Art Museum Classical Concert with my group MôD Artists.  I hope you will all take advantage of it of this marvelous concert in connection with the art exhibit of Jacob Lawrence.  The Crocker Art Museum is the oldest west of the Mississippi and has become a major player in the art world.  It is a beautiful mix of the old and new and the exhibits are first class.  The concert series is very special to this museum as the artists are asked to connect their programs to one of the touring exhibits or a permanent collection. MôD Artists, Maquette Kuper, flute, Omari Tau, voice, Deborah Pittman, clarinet, and I-Hui Chen, piano, will present a program on the Classical Concert Series on Sunday, Feb. 10 at 3:00 p.m. to connect with the art exhibit of Jacob Lawrence. Lawrence is an artist who emerged from the Harlem Renaissance movement that celebrated and propelled the vibrant artistry of African Americans. Lawrence is known for his depiction of African American culture and history through his paintings.

MôD Artists first performed at the Crocker Art Museum in September 2014 when they performed a concert in connection with the touring exhibit Harlem Renaissance, Civil Rights and Beyond.  The group recently completed a project, Convergence II, through a grant from the Sacramento Region Community Foundation.  The event-based project portrayed the history of Sacramento’s Oak Park through a series of multi-disciplinary shows with original music, art, dance, oral histories and film. MôD Artists will now align with the art of Jacob Lawrence with African American composer Valerie Coleman’s Portraits of Langston. Langston Hughes was a poet in the center of the Harlem Renaissance movement.  His descriptive poems of the era gave inspiration to Coleman’s musical settings.  MôD Artists add Hughes’ words and Coleman’s music to bring understanding and dimension to Lawrence’s art.
