From tslabaugh at djusd.net Fri Feb 1 13:44:57 2019 From: tslabaugh at djusd.net (Thomas Slabaugh) Date: Fri, 1 Feb 2019 21:44:57 +0000 Subject: [Dhsbb-jazz] Save the Music in Paradise Message-ID: <280ABC6B-3C4E-4D5C-849A-640EB355C76C@djusd.net> Hi all, Please consider attending and helping out to support our festival. We are hoping to help the band students in Paradise get back on their feet. We currently have verbal support from several major corporate sponsors, but still need financial assistance to help pay for steeply reduced in cost musical instruments. Many thanks for your consideration. Please share this with everyone you know! Thomas Slabaugh II Press Release: Save the Music in Paradise Festival In light of the tragic Camp Fire, California?s most deadly and costly fire, Davis High School?s Band Director Thomas Slabaugh II will be hosting a ?Save the Music in Paradise? festival. This festival will begin at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 16th in the Richard Brunelle Performance Hall and will feature over 350 students in ensembles from the DJUSD and nearby schools, as well as reunite the remaining Paradise Junior High and High School band students to perform in a combined Festival Band. This Festival Band will be directed by Mr. Bob Schofield, longstanding Paradise Band Director of over 20 years and a victim of the Camp Fire. In addition to the gift of music, the Davis High Band Program will be using this festival as an opportunity to raise needed funds to help the Paradise Unified School District (PUSD) Music Program replace equipment, musical instruments, uniforms and sheet music destroyed by the Camp fire. Monetary donations will be accepted with 100% of these proceeds being donated to the Paradise Music program. For the last 20 years, music teacher Bob Schofield has been working hard to keep music alive in his community. Despite being one of the many that lost everything, he is still trying to keep music happening in this small, decimated community. In a social media post, this will be the first time in many decades that this town will not have a school music concert. As reports show, the Camp Fire lasted 17 days and caused 86 known civilian fatalities. The estimated damage from this fire is approximately $16.6 billion dollars, devastating the community of Paradise, California and displacing former residents throughout the Western United States. This disaster has also caused an educational catastrophe for the former residents of this town. According to news reports and conversations with a PUSD teacher, former students are located throughout the Western United States, relocated after the Camp Fire destroyed several schools, a large portion of the town and most city services to this region. Music services to students in the PUSD are severely impacted and in danger of elimination due to the large expense encountered in restoring or replacing musical instruments, equipment and materials necessary to run a comprehensive, district wide music program. ?You would like to think that since we are back in school things would be normal, but they're not. I had a student miss a day last week so they could sift through the ashes of what was once their home. Still, we do our best to keep playing. It's cathartic for our souls.? Paradise Band Director Bob Schofield We are very excited about bringing the Paradise students together and giving them a gift of music from our small community. The festival will begin at 9:00 a.m. and continue until the final Festival Band begins performing at 5:00 p.m. Currently we are searching public schools throughout Northern California in search of former PUSD Band Musicians. It is our hope that we are able to reunite as many of these students for this event and give them an opportunity to perform together. ?Even though we're in a tiny room, we still get to play music, and that's a lot of fun!? - Joe Lighthall, 8th grade Paradise Band Student Davis Senior High School (DSHS) band student Kayla Trowbridge stated, ?In times of adversity, band has been a place of refuge, support, and joy for me. I hope that bringing the Paradise band students to Davis, our tight knit band can help them rebuild their community.? DSHS band student Sean West stated, ?Ever since I heard of this horrible tragedy, I?ve wanted to do something to help them get back on their feet. This festival is a great start!? Special thanks goes out to Ink Monkey Wearable Graphics owner Jason Steenbergen for donating 350 festival t-shirts to be worn by festival performers, free of charge. I hope you will all take advantage of it of this marvelous concert in connection with the art exhibit of Jacob Lawrence. The Crocker Art Museum is the oldest west of the Mississippi and has become a major player in the art world. It is a beautiful mix of the old and new and the exhibits are first class. The concert series is very special to this museum as the artists are asked to connect their programs to one of the touring exhibits or a permanent collection. Below is some information to further peak your interest. See you there! Maki M?D Artists, Maquette Kuper, flute, Omari Tau, voice, Deborah Pittman, clarinet, and I-Hui Chen, piano, will present a program on the Classical Concert Series on Sunday, Feb. 10 at 3:00 p.m. to connect with the art exhibit of Jacob Lawrence. Lawrence is an artist who emerged from the Harlem Renaissance movement that celebrated and propelled the vibrant artistry of African Americans. Lawrence is known for his depiction of African American culture and history through his paintings. M?D Artists first performed at the Crocker Art Museum in September 2014 when they performed a concert in connection with the touring exhibit Harlem Renaissance, Civil Rights and Beyond. The group recently completed a project, Convergence II, through a grant from the Sacramento Region Community Foundation. The event-based project portrayed the history of Sacramento?s Oak Park through a series of multi-disciplinary shows with original music, art, dance, oral histories and film. M?D Artists will now align with the art of Jacob Lawrence with African American composer Valerie Coleman?s Portraits of Langston. Langston Hughes was a poet in the center of the Harlem Renaissance movement. His descriptive poems of the era gave inspiration to Coleman?s musical settings. M?D Artists add Hughes? words and Coleman?s music to bring understanding and dimension to Lawrence?s art. Student (sitting with family) ($26.87): this is for students who wish to be seated at one of the tables of 10 with their family to enjoy dinner and the evening.? If you want your student to be able to sit with you through dinner and the evening (whether or not they are performing or volunteering), this ticket is for them.? Also, this?ticket is for siblings/ friends who are students in the district.?? 3. General ($52.74): this is for adults attending for dinner and the evening.? You will have a seat at a table, but it is not reserved seating.?? 4. Premium table seating ($56.88):? These tickets are to reserve an entire table of 10 for you and your guests.? The minimum number to purchase is 10 (so that you are purchasing the entire table).? Greetings Thomas! My name is Joe Wisgirda. I have lived here in Davis since 1991, my daughter attends Da Vinci High School. I teach electronic music here in Davis, at the UCDavis experimental college. I wanted to let you and your students know that the class I teach, "An Introduction To Electronic Music" will be taught once again starting in April 2019 at the South Silo on campus. The class is a interdisciplinary course : studio and live audio engineering, some sonic physics, some music theory, but mostly focused around modern music production techniques using Ableton's Live software. There are currently openings for the Spring 2019 session. The class is open to anyone in the community. There are no prerequisites for the class - owning a copy of Ableton is very helpful but not necessary. I would like to inquire about making an announcement about the class to your student body. Would it be possible for me to come and announce the class before band rehearsal at some point in the next few weeks? I believe there is a great interest, especially among the young folks, in electronic music culture. I would also be interested in any other ideas yo have regarding collaboration! Then they must have a "student" ticket ($26.87)c. are you an adult who will be there volunteering and want to have dinner? You need to buy a "General" ticket $52.74.? This also gets you a seat at one of the round tables of 10.? (Basically It's the regular price for admission; we only discount volunteer tickets for students...see "a" above).?? 2.
