Most everyone has paid the $75 reservation for the airline seat. Thank you. We are now happily collecting any future donations toward the $1200 total cost per person. Donations can be mailed to the band booster PO Box, sent to school to Mr. Slabaugh, or brought to the band booster meeting this week on Wed and handed directly to John or Katie! Also, if you think you want to add more people to the trip, (family or friends that just dying to come along for the fun!) NOW is the time to let us know. I will be paying the full airline bill by the end of the month and no changes will be allowed after that point. Happy 2016 - it's going to be a full and exciting year! This is the biggest fundraising event for the DHS band, typically drawing in over $10,000 which goes towards various causes including helping to support our annual band trip, paying for instruments and instrument repair, and buying music supplies including sheet music. So this event means a lot to the band programs. Specifically, we are looking for help in the following areas: * Auction - we need volunteers to run our web-based auction site. The auction site was used the first time last year and formed the foundation for selling tickets, tracking donors, and managing the silent auction. We need one person to lead that effort and 3 or 4 others to help on Sat and Sunday of the event to enter data. * Donors and Contributor Lead - We need a person to lead our outreach effort to donors and contributors. If you can only help out on the day of the event but are still interested, we are eager for your help too. Please contact Phil Bachand at phil.bachand at gmail.com if you are interested in helping out. Thanks. My son Jake Brugger is in the concert band this year at the high school. I also have an 8th grade band student at Harper and I am the VP of the Harper Band Boosters. I?m emailing you because we have a concert / fundraiser coming up called Sweet Notes on February 19th in the Harper MPR. This is a really fun night where the band boosters provides all-you-can-eat dessert and the kids provide the entertainment with by performing music they have chosen in small combo groups or as solo acts. It?s a really great night and the kids work on their performances for weeks at lunch or outside of school, so it?s fun to see what they come up with. We also invite the current 6th grade band students who will be attending Harper next year to come and see what band is all about at the junior high level. As you know, the more kids we can retain in the band program entering junior high, the more you will eventually end up with at the high school. So, although this is partly a fundraiser to help pay for our spring band trip every year, it is also an important outreach tool to keep kids interested in band and encourage them to play in junior high and beyond. Every year a few Harper alums ask me how they can get tickets because they want to come back and enjoy Sweet Notes as an alum. If you would be willing, could you send this ticket/RSVP form out to the high school band students and their families in case they would like to join us. All the information should be on the flyer. But I?m happy to answer questions as well [Amy Brugger amyebrugger at sbcglobal.net]. Let me know what you think. According to the packet info we need to mobilize quite early tomorrow - 6:40 a.m. at DHS. Neither John nor I will be able to be there for that, but I am hoping to make it by the end of the day up there. With 24 students in the jazz band we will need between 5-7 drivers for the event depending on size of car. Please let Tom know if you can help out. Students are not allowed to drive themselves, no matter their age as this is a school event. Also, our NOLA trip is just 11 weeks away! I will be ticketing our flights later this week, so any additional payments toward the $1200 cost to boosters per student would be greatly appreciated. Most have sent in the $75 donation for the air reservation, and a few have sent a full donation. If you aren't sure where you stand, and your check register doesn't show you the answer, then just ask and I'll get that info for you. Checks can be sent to school, mailed to the PO Box or brought tomorrow (give to Tom in the morning or directly to me in the afternoon). As always, checks should be made out to DHS Band Boosters. Note: This suggested $1200 donation amount includes a conservative guesstimate amount from the Coconut Grove fundraiser in March. Should we find we have excess funds after that event then we will either purchase more meals on the trip for the group or provide some spending funds per student on the trip or something. We should know more by the end of March, so stay tuned. By that time however, all of our bills will need to be paid off, so please send in your donations as soon as possible. Thank you! We should know more by the end of March, s > > o stay tuned. By that time however, all of our bills will need to be paid off, so please send in your donations as soon as possible. [cid:ii_ijv3ka4f0_1527ce2c22dd3824] ?Capitol Chamber Players will present ?Trio M?D & Trio of Premieres? on Sunday, February 21, 2016 at 3:00 p.m. at Congregation B?nai Israel, 3600 Riverside Blvd., Sacramento. The featured performers, Maquette Kuper, flute; Deborah Pittman, clarinet, and Omari Tau, baritone voice debuted their group, Trio M?D, in Sacramento in February of 2014. They are powerful players integrating classical, jazz, gospel, and Native American styles to create original arrangements and tonal colors. Concerts have included performances in San Francisco and Berkeley as well as local venues such as the Mondavi Center, the Crocker Art Museum, and the Guild Theater. Joining Trio M?D are oboist Curtis Kidwell and pianist I-Hui Chen. The concert will include original works and local premieres. Omari Tau continues to expand his ?Did You Get My Text?? piece for flute, clarinet, baritone, and cell phone! Ms. Kuper will perform two flute sonatas by local composers. The first is Prelude and Fugue for Flute and Piano by Lawrence Frank and the second is Sonata for Flute and Piano by Martin Melicharek. Another premiere will be the Trio for Flute, Oboe and Piano by Bill Douglas. Lawrence Frank retired in 1998 from his job as an engineer specializing in heat transfer and thermal software and returned to his childhood passion of composing music. He studied composition with Mario Castenlnuovo-Tedesco. He wrote his piece Prelude and Fugue for Flute and Piano in 1996 after a long period of musical inactivity. It is based on the inspiration of works by Vivaldi. Mr. Frank earned several composition awards. He wrote a flute choir work, California National Park Suite, for the Davis Youth Flute Choir that was premiered in July of 2010 and the Davis High School Advanced Treble performed New Ezekiel the same year. Martin Melicharek is a large name in the flute community as the director of the Camellia City Flute Choir. Dr. Melicahrek recently retired from his job as a neurosurgeon and has devoted his time to conducting and composition. The Sonata for Flute and Piano was written in 2013 and received its first performance at the National Flute convention in August, 2014. The three movements honor his former flute teacher Edna Comerchero who became a founding member of the Camellia City Flute Choir. The first movement, Allegretto, was written as a piano and flute duet. This concept was extended to the last two movements. It memorializes Edna's competency not only as a flutist but as a pianist. The second movement pays homage to Edna's matriculation at the Paris Conservatory and studies with Marcel Moyse in Vermont. The simple composition style of Faure?s, Morceau de Concours was the template for the Andantino. The final movement, Scherzando- Toccata takes its inspiration from one of Edna's favorite contemporary composers, Sergei Prokoviev. The movement incorporates the opening motif of his dynamic and very difficult, Toccata in D for piano. Bill Douglas was born in London, Ontario to a big band trombonist father and a church organist mother. As a teen he admired jazz heroes such as Bill Evans, Miles Davis, and John Coltrane. He earned his bachelor of music from the University of Toronto and then went on to study at Yale for his Master of Music in bassoon and his Master of Musical Arts in composition. It was at Yale he met clarinet Richard Stolzman and a life-long collaboration of touring and recording began. Mr. Douglas earned a Canada Council Award to study composition in London. He taught at the California Institute of the Arts where he became interested in African and Indian music. He currently teaches at the Naropa Institute in Boulder, Colorado. Bassoonist Richard Ramey organized a group commission for Mr. Doulgas to write the Trio for Flute, Oboe and Piano in 2015. It has three movements, Waltz Cantabile, Procession and Allegro Cantando. This piece was begun in July, 2014 and completed in May, 2015. The first and third movements follow the basic jazz form: a unison theme followed by a written-out improvisation on the chords of the theme, and then a return to the theme with variations. The second movement uses a scale called hijaz. Tickets for the concert are available at the door for $20 general, $15 senior and $10 student. An Evening at Coconut Grove will take place this year on March 5th and 6th. This year it will span 2 days, with an evening dinner, and music on Saturday night, and an afternoon event on Sunday. Proceeds from this event benefit students in ALL of the DHS Bands. It is our major fundraiser for our Spring Trip (this year to Anaheim) and also helps fund general band needs such as instrument repair, music purchases and new instruments. We need your help to make this event a success! We are soliciting items to include in the silent auction portion of the event. We encourage every band family to consider donating something for the auction. With 130 families involved in one of the DHS Bands, we should be able to put on one exciting auction! Do you own a business or know someone who does? Do you have a hobby and have a handmade item to donate? Or perhaps a few hours of yard work, babysitting, or meal prep to offer? Can you teach a skill? Do you have a timeshare or a vacation home you can offer? Can you put together a themed gift basket? No donation is too small - we can combine a few $5 gift cards into a really nice gift basket package after all. Please click on the link below and let us know how you can contribute to our auction effort. _www.SignUpGenius.com/go/8050C45ABAB2F4-coconut_ (http://www.SignUpGenius.com/go/8050C45ABAB2F4-coconut) Attached also, is a letter about the event that can be shared at businesses you frequent to help solicit donations. Please help make this event a success for all the band students, and donate something - no matter how small to our Coconut Grove auction.
