This is a really fun opportunity to play with the Aggies and other High School bands on the football field for halftime. All band students are invited to join us and it will be basically a Pep Band type event. We will meet at 12:45 pm at the entrance to the stadium tunnel (NW side of the Stadium, closest to Hutchinson & 113), and walk in together for rehearsal. We will be wearing our DHS Blue Polo band shirts, dark shorts (of some kind), tennis shoes (must be closed toed shoes), sunscreen and a hat for practicing. Bring sunglasses, as the sun will be in our faces (likely) during the 1st part of the game. Also bring a water bottle with your name on it. It is also going to be HOT, so plan accordingly. IMPORTANT: If you have a lyre for your instrument, please bring it, otherwise you will have to memorize the music (on the fly). Eat lunch before coming, and plan on bringing some $$ to buy a hotdog or something at the snack bar in the stadium after the game begins. Rehearsal will be from 1-3pm, then the students need to be back at the ARC (UC Davis Athletic & Recreation Center) by 4:30 pm (or before) where the Aggie Band will perform for us and then we'll head over to the stadium. You can hang out at the ARC in between rehearsal and 4:30 pm staging time if you like. It has AC. :) After the game, please pick up your students on the west side of the stadium in the parking lot area around 9:15 pm. You can call or text me with update/status. I will try to remember to send out a note to everyone when the game is 5 minutes from the end. We will have the Blue Band Polos for sale tonight ($10 for 1st one per student, and $20 for replacements or other family members) at the pep band rehearsal which starts at 7:30pm in the band room (PA3). We take cash or checks (made out to DHS Band Boosters). Should be tons of fun! Cheers, ~JAH John Horn DHS Band Booster President (916) 804-5017 cell 2015 BAND DAY WITH THE CAL AGGIE MARCHING BAND-UH! The Brunelle Theater is home to over 125 public events and performances every year ranging from elementary band concerts, to musical productions, to community events. And although, a large number of students at DSHS and Da Vinci participate in performing arts in classes or extra-curricular activities, certainly there are many students on this campus for whom the entire theater building is a mystery. So, in an effort to increase student ownership, add a bit more equitable access, and give our audiences a warm Blue Devil welcome, the Brunelle Theater Usher program was created. Any high school student can attend a one hour orientation, scheduled either after school or in the evening. At orientation, students take a full tour of the building and they receive a packet containing guidelines, expectations, and a job description for ushering. Should they wish to register as an usher, they submit their contact information and will then receive an invite to the Usher page on Signup Genius. Each usher is expected to sign up for 3 events each performance season (Sept-Jan, Feb-March, April ?June) Students not only get a chance to see some amazing performances, but they also gain customer service skills and a chance to earn volunteer or community service hours while still on campus. The hope is that this will also serve to connect some of our elementary and jr. high performers with a welcoming and positive environment on the high school campus, and give our high school students a low commitment way to be a part of the day to day operations of the theater. If you have any questions or feel this might be a good match for any class you teach or club you advise please let me know. I?d be happy to arrange additional orientations sessions for interested groups. We?ve held one orientation thus far and had a really positive response from students, so I?m hopeful that this can become a permanent outreach program of the Brunelle Theater In case students (or adults) have questions on the job of an usher, I?ve attached a rough outline of the program which has some addition information on the volunteer basics. Thanks for your time, and please share the information below (or above!) with your classes as you see fit. Help bring Blue Devil spirit to the new Brunelle Theater student usher program. Earn volunteer hours, gain customers service skills, and get to see performances for free. The next orientations are Tuesday September 29th , 7-8pm and Wednesday, Sept. 30 at 2:45pm-3:45 in the lobby at the front of the Brunelle Theater. All are welcome! No experience necessary! Since my arrival at DHS, we have been extremely fortunate to have very capable and hard working parents that have dedicated many hours of their time to enrich the experience of all students enrolled in band. Two of the most active of these parents have been John and Katie Horn. They have three children, all in band throughout school, and have been involved in the DHS Band Boosters for all 9 years, mostly serving as President. Katie has been the primary parent planner for our tours since her arrival. This year, their youngest child is a senior and will graduate. It is not hubris to state that the DHS Band Boosters have been successful, in a large degree, because of the Horn?s involvement. I have been very lucky to have their hard work, loyal support, and kind friendship in the four years I have been at DHS. However, I am also wary to say farewell to them at the end of this year, for they have a great amount of institutional knowledge that they have accumulated during their service to our band program. Hence the title of this email. I am confident we have smart, energized, and dedicated parents who are capable and willing to insure the DHS Band Boosters will continue to thrive in the coming years, serving kids in the program as they transform into young adults. However, many may not know how much their time and efforts are in need. This email is meant to both inform and share my plea for your involvement in the Band Boosters. In light of this request, everyone is invited to join us for the upcoming Band Booster meeting on Wednesday, October 7th. The meeting will be held in PA-3 at DHS and will begin at 7:30pm and end at 9:00pm. In this meeting, we will be asking for your commitment to help with the many tasks necessary to support the entire band program. We will also give a complete overview of the upcoming Spring Tour to Anaheim, including our activities in Disneyland. This is a meeting where we hope to have very high turnout of parent boosters. The final thoughts I would care to share with you are an observation of how lucky we are to have such a high quality music program in Davis. The community has supported this educational program with their time, energy, and finances that, with the help of dedicated parents, have allowed the kids and their teachers to share in the love of music making for many years. I recognize how special this situation truly is and hope you will continue to support this fine program for many years to come.
