The annual DHS Orchestra Concerto Competition will be held Wednesday, January 13th, 2016 at 7:00pm on stage in the DHS Brunelle Performance Hall. It is open to all DHS instrumentalist and free to the public to view. The winner of this competition will be given the honor of performing with the DHS Symphony Orchestra at the Mondavi Center in Jackson Hall at the Wennberg Music Festival on Sunday, March 6, 2016 at 2:30pm as well as a check for $500.00.
A sign-up sheet and informational flyer are now on the window of the computer lab in PA-3. Deadline to sign up is Friday December 18, 2015. It is important to start to plan for this event now and begin preparing your solos ASAP.

It's time to make sure you have the correct clothing for the upcoming  
concert season for the DHS Bands.  Here is a reminder of the concert attire  the 
bands may wear at various times during the year. 

Dress Blacks:
For most concerts for Symphonic and Concert Bands at DHS Brunelle  Theater: 
 

Black pants, black suit jacket, white button down shirt, black bow tie,  
black socks, black dress shoes (not athletic shoes).  This can be a tuxedo  
but does not have to be.  
 
Black dress, or black skirt or pants and black top.  No spaghetti  straps.  
Black shoes (not athletic shoes).
 
Casual Blacks:  
Could be for any of the 3 bands.
 
Occasionally Mr. Slabaugh will call out for Casual Blacks- especially for  
travel times or outdoor casual concerts. Rarely (if ever?) for concerts at  
DHS.   This would be black on the bottom, and white on top which could  be a 
polo shirt or button down, black shoes, black socks.  
 
Blue Polos:  
Now that we have the polo shirts (New as of 2014), we sometimes do casual  
concerts for any of the 3 bands in Blue DHS Band Polo Shirt and black pants, 
 black shoes , black socks.  
 
Jazz Band Shirt and Tie
Jazz Band attire (obviously).
 
For the last few years the jazz band has worn the same blue Van Heusen  
button down dress shirt with a tie chosen by the students.  Look for more  info 
on the Jazz list serve and it becomes available as to how to order your  
shirt and tie.
 
 
Note:  Many thrift stores have black suits, tuxedos and women's black  
pants and tops in stock this time of year.  It is a great resource for  finding 
concert clothes for our growing kids!

We will have our first trip planning meeting for the Spring DHS Band Tour  
to Disneyland next week at my home. 
 
Thursday November 19th,  7:30 p.m.
 
Please email me if you are interested in joining our trip planning  group.  
We have a lot of fun getting all the details put together for these  
memorable experiences for the kids.  You are welcome to just come learn  more 
about the trip, or jump in and help out with a small task.  With many  helpers, 
no job is too large. 
 
Please also let me know if you are interested in chaperoning the  trip.  If 
more parents are interested in joining the trip than we have need  of, we 
will start by taking those who are involved organizing various parts of  the 
trip first, then fill in with additional chaperones as needed.  I am  
starting a list of all interested, so please let me know if I should add your  
name to the list.

Hi all,

I have received the information from Delta College today regarding the jazz festival. A change from previous years is that we have three combos and a jazz band performing on this day. As such, it will be a long day and we will need a lot of assistance from parent chaperones and drivers.

I am attaching the information sheet for your perusal. I will be submitting the field trip packet to the front office on Monday and should have field trip permission forms ready for distribution soon.

Here is what I need now from all parents.

1. Please read the attached information sheet.
2. Please contact me ASAP if you are able to drive and take equipment to the festival.
3. I will send out DJUSD driver approval forms beginning on Monday. They will be a one-time submission process and will cover all the trips we have planned for the entire school year with the Jazz Band.
4. Please return the forms ASAP with a copy of your valid drivers license and valid proof of insurance card.


Uniform Update
The manufacturer of our blue shirts we have been wearing is no longer making this shirt. As such, every member will need to purchase a new shirt, as we have been unable to find a different manufacturer that has a style and color that matches the shirts used in the past. I also did a poll of the band members and they have agreed that we should remain with a blue shirt. Darlene Comingore has been working very hard to deal with this shirt issue and we will have a new vendor and shirt information forthcoming very soon.

On Monday of next week, the band will vote on their choice for a tie this year. I will also be sending out this information very soon. The ties cost about $25.00 each (with shipping and handling) and will be ordered by the band boosters.

Hi All,
The Disneyland trip is definitely ON!  We have heard from enough folks  to 
ensure that we will take this trip, but still need to hear from about 25% of 
 the group as to your status. 

1.  Please fill out the Trip Reservation form THIS WEEK if you  haven't yet 
done so, to let us know if your student will or will not be coming  on the 
Anaheim Tour this spring.  We need to hear from every  band family about 
their student.  We are happily accepting all  pledge donations now as per the 
schedule on the form so that we can meet our  payment requirements for hotel 
deposit etc.  
 
If you have misplaced your form go to _www.bandboosters.com_ 
(http://www.bandboosters.com)  and download a new  one.  Please return it to the band room 
or mail it to the PO Box listed on  the form with any donations this week 
before break.  We need firm  numbers for who is going on the trip, so please 
help make this job a bit easier  by sending in those forms and just letting 
us know "yes" or "not this  time".
 

2.  Just a reminder to email me, Katie Horn,  if you are  interested in 
helping to put together a great trip for the band kids this  spring.  Our first 
meeting will be this week on Thursday at the Horn  House. I'll send out an 
email with the address and specifics to all who  reply before the meeting.  
Hope to see many new faces on Thursday!   It's just as much fun for the 
adults as it is for the kids so consider  joining!

After conversing with the Symphonic Band members today, I am extending the honor band recording due date to this coming Monday, November 23, 2015. I will also open the room and assist with recording each student, if needed, from 10:00am to 3:00pm.

ALL RECORDINGS AND PAPERWORK MUST BE TURNED IN TO ME BY 3:00PM THIS DAY. Please make checks payable to ?DHS Band Boosters?, as one check must accompany all the applications.


I hope this is helpful to all there various students auditioning for honor bands this year!

On behalf of the band students at Davis Senior High School, please accept our invitation to attend one of these fine upcoming concert.

            On Thursday, December 10th, come and enjoy the Davis Senior High School Concert and Symphonic Bands perform great music, including seasonal favorites, at our annual Winter Rhapsody concert. The Concert Band will perform music by R. Vaughan Williams, David Holsinger, Percy Aldridge Grainger, and Joseph Turrin. The DHS Symphonic Band will then be featured on the epic Russian Christmas Music, composed by a young by Alfred Reed in celebration of the 1944 alliance with Russian forces prior to the invasion of Normandy. The both bands will come together to perform a spectacular finale of seasonal favorites.

If Jazz is more your style, then you won?t want to miss the annual Winter Jazz Extravaganza on Tuesday, December 8th. This concert features jazz bands from DaVinci, Emerson, Harper, and Holmes Junior High Schools, as well as the award winning Davis Senior High Jazz Band. Musical styles will explore the diversity that is found in modern jazz, as well as featuring many fine solo and small group performances by the talented students of the Davis schools.

All concerts are held at the Richard Brunelle Performance Hall and will begin at 7:30pm. There is no admission charge for these concerts, but donations are accepted at the door.

Huge Arts Education Win in U.S. Congress This Week

Here's something a lot of us have been urging: American schools' emphasis on STEM may officially turn to STEAM -- Science, Technology, Engineering, **Arts** and Math!

In the midst of the biggest shakeup of federal education law in over a decade, Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici (D-OR) successfully added an amendment today to the rewrite of the nation's Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) legislation that will integrate the arts into STEM education (science, technology, engineering and math).This is of particular significance because her amendment was unanimously adopted by voice vote by the joint House-Senate Conference Committee during today's mark-up of the final ESEA bill. Subject: Changes to DJUSD email spam filter

Dear DJUSD Colleagues,

We continue to look for changes we can make to our email spam filter to increase the accuracy of spam detection.

The latest change we made today is to place all yahoo.com<http://yahoo.com> addresses on a special list that will not be evaluated for spam. The way that Yahoo sends their emails led to a higher than average detection as potential spam, sending those emails to a Quarantine for manual review. With this change to the filter configuration, all Yahoo addresses will come directly through without evaluation.

Yahoo provides email services for sbcglobal.net<http://sbcglobal.net> and att.net<http://att.net>. As a consequence, email addresses from these two other domains also has been subject to a high level of false detection as potential spam. We have also added att.net<http://att.net> and sbcglobal.net<http://sbcglobal.net> to the list of addresses that will be automatically delivered without spam evaluation.

Does anyone have a video clip of symphonic or concert band from this year  
or last year?  I have been unable to submit our complete Disney Performing  
Arts application without this piece.  If anyone has posted anything to You  
Tube or has a video they took on their phone you could send me that would be 
 wonderful. Perhaps a parent who took a vidoe from the San Diego  Trip last 
year even?   Disney has a full audio CD of the group, and a  photo of the 
group, but called to say they must have a video of the group  performing.

I do not have a video of any Spring performances from last year. If anyone has any, especially from tour, I would be greatly appreciative!
