Please be sure you have sent in a copy of your travel documents so that we can make sure we have everything set. I will be actually ticketing the flight in about 2 weeks and will be using the documents to confirm exact legal names for the airline tickets. We have about 100 students attending, and you can imagine the job of tracking down folks at the last minute to get this done, so please get those documents in. Also, please send in those final pledge amounts. We will be paying out a large sum to the airline at that time and we need to make sure we have the funds to cover it. If all families honor their pledged amounts we will be fine, so please get those final pledges in. If you can't remember your status with that just contact us and we can provide you with information. If your situation has changed and you need to alter your pledge amount please let us know that too, so we can plan accordingly. Trip expenses are adding up and still less than half of the funds have been collected. If your child is planning to use a passport you should already have applied for that. If not, you should apply now, but if it doesn't come in time remember you can use a birth certificate. Below is a review of the acceptable documents for school group travel to and from Canada (which does differ from individual family travel): Travel Documents needed Students will need to travel with either: 1. A valid US passport valid until at least June 15, 2014. (Students with international passports need to be valid until Dec. 1, 2014) OR 2. A driver's license or school ID (must have photo) AND one of the following: ? a notarized copy of the birth certificate ? an original birth certificate ? a lawful permanent resident card ? naturalization certificate Please note that if traveling this way you will also need a permission slip and possible letter signed by both parents listed on the birth certificate allowing travel out of the country. All pledge amounts and document copies can be sent to the band booster mail box at: DHS Band Boosters - Spring Trip PO Box 73522 Davis, CA 95617 Thank you for your timeliness in getting these items completed. The playing level of those who auditioned was very high this year, making the listening enjoyable and challenging. I sincerely appreciate your hard work and the time you dedicated to preparing your auditions. The two audition bands at DHS, the Symphonic Band and Jazz Ensemble, have a reputation for performance excellence. This is due to the hard work of those who preceded and gave their time and talents to these fine bands. The expectation is that those students who are being offered positions in these ensembles will continue to work hard to uphold this reputation. It is a responsibility we have been entrusted with by those who have preceded us, the school community, and by the City of Davis. I do not take this responsibility lightly and those who accept membership into these ensembles will be expected to do the same. If your name appears on the attached list, you are being offered membership into the ensemble for which you are listed. If you accept this membership, you need to do nothing in response to this email. Please enroll for the appropriate class on your registration form and the counselors will add you to the class with my approval. If your name does not appear on this list, I thank you for your hard work. The decision was not easy to make, but a limited number of positions are available for these audition ensembles. I encourage you to enroll in the DHS Concert Band, a non-audition band. Many past and current Symphonic Band and Jazz Ensemble members came from Concert Band where they continued to develop their playing skills, launching them into an audition ensemble later in their high school life. If, for some reason, you are unable to accept membership into the audition ensemble, I MUST know no later than Friday, March 21, 2014. Please email me with your full name, instrument, student ID#, and the reason for not accepting the position so I am able to fill the spot from the waiting list. Further, I need to know if issues with enrollment occur so I am able to deal with these issues as necessary. I am excited to work with you in the coming school year. Please keep practicing over the rest of the current school year and during summer recess. We?ll begin in earnest in August! DJUSD was the only school district in the Sacramento area to receive this award. This designation was based on an evaluation of a survey application of our district that included criteria such as program breadth, percentage participation, and program accessibility. For the past 6 years, we submitted an application for this program, but were not selected. The stated weakness in our program last year was the fact that at no point in our K-12 curricula was there a guarantee that every student would participate in music instruction by a credentialed music teacher -- that music is not a compulsory subject at any grade level. Most other school districts designated as a "Best Community for Music Education" typically had an elementary general music program available to all students in one or more grades. This year I added written supplemental material to our application explaining the extent of parent volunteer support for music programs in the schools, such as BRAVO, Link Up, DSAF-funded programs (including elementary choirs), and individual efforts by classroom teachers. I also stated that it is a current aspiration of this school district to have a general music education program in our elementary schools, as demonstrated by the current school board taking up a recommendation to explore having an elementary general music education program in the district. Apparently it was enough to score us high enough for the designation. But I hope that our district will be able to follow through and establish an elementary general music education program in an upcoming school board meeting to help secure such a designation in future years. I think this award is well-deserved, given what our community has done and gone through to keep and maintain our school music program. What we have in this award is significantly attributable to the tireless efforts of the district music faculty, administrators, school board, and the community at large. http://www.nammfoundation.org/research/best-communities-music-education-2014 http://www.nammfoundation.org/press-room/namm-foundation-spotlights-2014s-best-communities-music-education With gratitude, Hiram Jackson -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... What we have in this award is significantly attributable to the tireless efforts of the district music faculty, administrators, school board, and the community at large. http://www.nammfoundation.org/research/best-communities-music-education-2014 http://www.nammfoundation.org/press-room/namm-foundation-spotlights-2014s-best-communities-music-education With gratitude, Hiram Jackson This email message is for the sole use of the intended recipient(s) and may contain privileged and confidential information. Message-ID: <18F0987E-BBE9-4165-AF45-2B329F426520@djusd.net> Hi all, I just spoke with the Assistant Director of the Brubeck Institute and, due to the unpredictable weather, they have cancelled the outdoor performances scheduled for tomorrow. Total bummer! However, they have continued to offer free tickets to the Teri Lynn Carrington later that evening (8pm). I need to know who will be attending the concert this evening so they will have tickets available at the door.
