The cold is slowy creeping in, Music Lovers!

But despite being sandwiched between broomsticks and drumsticks, we hope to banish the chill on Thurs., Nov. 7th with ear-warming strains from Richie Lawrence and his band The Yolos and also from the impressive harmonies of the duo Me and Him.  This ThursdayLive! concert for November will begin at 7:30 pm in the upstairs room at the Davis Odd Fellows Hall, 415-2nd.

The Yolos feature a seasoned crew of Northern California musicians.  Keith Cary can be heard on all things stringed and is the creator of thebedpanndolin, a stainless steel resonator mandolin.  Bart van der Zeeuw holds forth on drums, Scott Prawalsky on the upright bass, and together they constitute "the current go-to rhythm section for the north." Their range extends from Americana, Honky-Tonk, and Haitian to Rockin' Roots.

Katie Thomas, a vocalist, is the newest member of this group and is considered a rising star.  Richie Lawrence, aside from composing most of The Yolos' music and playing both piano and accordion, also sings, and sings in a way described by one critic as "gentle and insistent...never intrusive but impossible to ignore."(D.M. Collins of the L.A. Record)

Me and Him is an exceptional guitar duo--Kurt Roggli and Martin Lewis--that
renders a rich blend of two Martin guitars. Their musical offerings include traditional Celtic tunes as well as contemporary American Folk and Bluegrass and an occasional pop tune that they make their own.

And don't forget:  all ThursdayLive! concerts are free, family-friendly, and wheelchair accessible.  Drinks on sale range from soft to beer and wine.  Shows begin at 7:30 pm and, until closing at approximately 10:00 pm, attendees can come and leave as they choose.  All ages are welcome, and donations for worthy causes--including the featured musicians--are always appreciated.

Rent-a-Band is a way for students to entertain the community leading up to the holidays, have a lot of fun, and raise funds toward the Spring Trip. It's also a wonderful way for parents to be involved with the community and the band program.

If you have gig suggestions or want to help in any way, please contact Renee Lawver De Angelis, the Booster Secretary, at dhsbbsecretary at gmail.com<mailto:dhsbbsecretary at gmail.com>. Please talk with your students and encourage them to participate in this festive opportunity. Rehearsals are scheduled for Thursdays, Nov. 7 and 14, from 3:30-5:30.

In the past, the band has been booked for 8-10 gigs. The students rehearse with Mr. Slabaugh and play from a library of simple holiday music in four parts. This is a valuable musical experience for the students, as it helps them learn to play in small ensembles of 6-8 players and listen to each other with no conductor. Once trained, he will select student leaders who will be in touch with the parent coordinator.

Hi Football Fans!
 
Just wanted to let everyone know that John is traveling right now.  He  
recently arrived in Malaysia, and has not had computer access for a little  
bit.  I do believe he has had all the numbers for the football grids picked  
for several weeks.  As soon as he is back at a computer,  I'm sure he  will 
publish the grid and the results.  I'm sorry they were not sent out  prior to 
the game.  It was just one thing he forgot to cover  before  he left.

Dear Band Parents,

We are moving  forward with the design and purchase of a band polo shirt 
(with both men's and  women's sizes available, as well as XS and XXL) that can 
be used for events such  as fundraisers where we want to be identified as 
part of the band, informal  concerts such as Picnic in the Park, school 
spirit days or parades when super  casual T-shirt pep band attire isn't desired, 
and for the spring trip to Canada.  The students will keep the same polo 
shirt for all years and in any DHS  band.  

Ink Monkey has worked up a design and we will have it  embroidered (see 
attached image). Every band student will be issued a polo  shirt, as long as 
you have completed the general band registration which tells  us the shirt 
size desired. The suggested one time donation will be  $10.00/shirt, discounted

Hi all,

I just received this email today. To briefly synopsize, we perform at 3:55. This means we will have to arrive just before Noon to see the Brubeck fellows concert, as well as other ensembles, as this is an expected outcome of attending festivals. This will also allow us plenty of time for warm-ups, etc? before our performance. We get 25 minutes for warm-up, so students will need to meet at our predetermined location at 3:10 so we can double check everything and move to our warm-up location.

The performance will last 25 minutes. There will be a clinic following that last about 25 minutes. Awards are at 5:15 and all are expected to stay for this event.

For those of you attending the Prom this evening, you should be able to leave Stockton by 6:00pm. All the rest are expected to stay and watch the evening show Featuring "Espacio<http://www.evascowmusic.com/>" with guest Eric Marienthal<http://www.ericmarienthal.com/bio.html>. The boosters have prepurchased tickets for the students and should have some extra for the parents. We?ll likely go our to dinner after the awards ceremony, then return for the evening show.


By the way - Festival Tickets:

Admission passes are $10.00 general admission at the box office. This does not cover the evening show. There will be no admittance to performance or clinic venues without a wrist band. Please let chaperones and parents know!!

Dear fellow music supporters,

This Thursday (11/20) the school board will hear an informational presentation about the school music program.  It is not scheduled to make any decisions at the meeting, although the discussions could lead to future decisions about the music program.

Mr. Tom Slabaugh (DHS Band Director) and fellow music teachers have produced an informational report about the district music program, which can be found in the agenda packet for the meeting (under item V. a., http://davis.csbaagendaonline.net/cgi-bin/WebObjects/davis-eAgenda.woa/wa/displayMeeting?meetingID=1667).  The report makes some key recommendations for the improvement of access to the music program, including an elementary choral program (which might also serve as an elementary general music program) and a secondary guitar program.

Please consider attending the meeting.  The presentation is scheduled very early (7:15) in the school board meeting, City Council Chambers, and will allow you to get home at a reasonable hour.  Having parents and supporters present is always looks good for the program.  Your comments about the school music program during public comment period for that agenda item would also be appropriate.

Please pass this on to anyone else that you think would be interested.
