From tslabaugh at djusd.net Mon Apr 1 09:56:51 2013 From: tslabaugh at djusd.net (tslabaugh at djusd.net) Date: Mon, 1 Apr 2013 16:56:51 +0000 Subject: [Dhsbb-jazz] Music Students on KDVS Message-ID: Hi all, I believe this is a wonderful opportunity to share with the Davis community the diverse talent that comprises the DHS music ensembles. For those interested in participating, I will consider this akin to an outside performance and offer points for participation. All the best! Mr. Slabaugh This is call for all of our musical prodigies, enthusiasts, and solo-wizards! KDVS, the University's educational freeform radio station, is looking for high-school aged soloists or ensembles to perform and be interviewed on-air during a "community student-spotlight" hour of programming. For years KDVS had such a program, in the vein of NPR's "From the Top", but it went off-air years ago and hasn't been seen for quite the while. Now a new DJ is interested in bringing it back, and the DHS musical ensembles are the first to be called. If anyone at all is interested in performing a solo on-air, please write to natelythegreat at gmail.com to put in your request. She asks that you be willing to be interviewed on-air and to have a prepared recording of your work, if possible. If you have more questions, please feel free to contact me at jconant5 at gmail.com; I can also help you record a solo if you need. Hope to see you down at the station! Tom would like to start at 1pm, and we will continue until everything is checked. If we can get several people working on it, we will be able to get everything/everyone loaded in time to stay on schedule. If you can help, please let me know so we can have an idea of how to set things up. If you haven???t responded to me but discover tomorrow that you can help, just come to the IPAB at the high school and there will be plenty for everyone to do. Very briefly, Tom has learned that some of our students intend to take illegal substances along with them on the band trip with the plan of having a party at the hotel in Anaheim. I know I don???t have to explain why this can???t be allowed. We have now been put in the infuriating position of having to check everyone???s bags. I realize that most of the students are not part of the group causing the problem, and I sincerely apologize to everyone who is subjected to these searches even though they are not involved with any illegal activity. We are taking these steps only to try to keep all students safe while on the trip. Thanks. This year we are asking for donations of snacks for the busses. Anyone who wishes to donate a snack please drop it off in the morning to the IPAB. We will have parents there all day as we prepare for departure. Easy to hand out items that will not be too messy to eat on the busses are recommended. There are about 50 seats per bus, but you may send in any amount and we will divide things up before departure. Thanks again for anything you can send. It's going to be a great trip for the kids! I have tentatively reserved 12 rooms for Friday, April 26, at Circus Circus, which is listed as the official festival hotel by the UN-R folks who are coordinating the jazz festival. The price for rooms that day is $189, with the total coming to about $225 per room once all surcharges and taxes are included. At this point, I have checked on six hotels, and one of them, the Ramada Reno Hilton, has said that they may be able to help us. Until and unless I hear from them before noon tomorrow, we have the rooms at Circus Circus. I do not intend to call any other hotels. If you would like to use one of the 12 Circus Circus rooms, please reply to this email to let me know. We need six rooms for students and I somewhat arbitrarily guessed that we would need six for the director and drivers/chaperones. Based upon the number of parents who have said they will attend Saturday???s performance we may need several more, but I don???t know if some of you may be planning to drive up Saturday morning or if anyone might want to look for a room in a different hotel of their choice. If we need to add more rooms to the reservation, I would be happy to do that at any point, but since rooms are in such high demand for that night I would like to do it before I leave for the Disney trip tomorrow.) I would like to have at least all students and enough chaperones to provide adequate supervision together at one hotel, but that doesn???t mean that absolutely everyone affiliated with DHS must be in a single hotel. In case you are wondering about pricing, we do not get any discounts for reserving a large group of rooms from Circus Circus. The other topic to discuss is the Friday evening concert featuring Matt Wilson???s Arts and Crafts. Tom would like the students to attend, so the band boosters group has purchased tickets for Tom, all students, and for Julie and Renee who had told me over the phone or in emails that they wanted to attend the concert. We are asking parents to reimburse the band boosters for the tickets and hotel expense if possible, but as with all class-related activities all students are encouraged to participate. If your current financial situation doesn???t allow you to issue that reimbursement payment for the student costs we will make things work some other way. We want all of the students to participate, learn, and enjoy the experience. As always, adults are required to pay for all of their own expenses. Just a brief explanation: I did not try to coordinate ticket purchases for everyone else because the tickets are all general admission, so everyone can order their own tickets and still stay with the group. Also, coordinating an unknown, fluctuating number of adult tickets adds a layer of complexity that I just didn???t have the energy to deal with right now. If you would like to get tickets, they can be purchased at the box office in Reno for $27 for adults and $18 for students or can be ordered over the phone for $31.75 and $21.50 (telephone 800-325-7328). The ticketing service had a different-sounding name for the concert, but if you tell them it is the Matt Wilson concert in the Lawlor Events Center at 7:30pm on Friday, April 26, they will get the right tickets for you. Tickets can be mailed to your home if you order at least 10 business days before the concert, otherwise they can be picked up at a will-call window at the Lawlor box office on the day of the show. Wow. Way more than I intended to write. The busses finally rolled out around 3:30 this afternoon. They will stop for a couple of bathroom breaks and a dinner break likely around Kettleman City. Thank you to all the families who brought snack foods for the kids. I think there are more snacks than we've ever had on a trip before - you guys are truly awesome to rally that much response with less than 24 hrs. notice! Attached is the Itinerary for the trip. Know that your kids will be kept very busy and be well supervised during the trip, all while having the opportunity to make some new friends, form stronger bonds with other band mates, have some new musical experiences at the collegiate and professional level and well, just have fun! They will be making the music track to an animation piece during their workshop, so be sure to come to the May band booster meeting where hopefully we will be able to show them to everyone. It is really amazing how well the students do with this, and the Disney folks remember our DHS groups and pull out their more challenging pieces that they cannot use with most of the schools that tour there. Also be sure to check out the DHS Bands Face Book page for periodic updates during the trip! The group will be staying at: Embassy Suites, Anaheim North 3100 East Frontera Street, Anaheim 714-632-1221 Have a magical day! DuPertuis grew up in Merced, performing in school bands, and then attended Fresno State, where he studied vocal music. Dupertuis was so immersed in his studies that he ?just about slept in the music library and listened to all the music I could.? After he finished his bachelor?s degree, he earned a teaching credential in music. ?I wanted to get married and I had to tell the girl?s father what I was going to do for a living,? DuPertuis said with a twinkle in his eye. He worked as a music teacher in various California districts for several years, then tried other lines of work. But when he heard in 1993 that the Davis school district was looking for a part-time music teacher at the elementary school level, he decided to return to the classroom. The trombone is his main instrument, but as a band teacher DuPertuis has maintained proficiency with other brass instruments, reed instruments, drums, etc. ?I?ve tried to keep up competency in all the instruments I teach,? he said. For several years, DuPertuis was the band director at Emerson Junior High, where his students included Chris Clark (now a professional saxophone player who recently released his first album as a jazz artist). Other students learn to play for the joy of making music, and don?t plan on music as a career. ?Hopefully they continue to play as adults,? DuPertuis said. ?The other thing you?re offering is the hope that they?ll become music patrons, which can be very rewarding.? One of the advantages of teaching band at the junior high level was getting to see the students more often. ?You can divide your curriculum into learnable parts ? tone production, for instance, or sight reading. And you can work on it with them every day,? he said. At the elementary schools, the music teacher works with students one day a week, and that time can be interrupted by three-day weekends that involve Monday holidays, or parent/teacher conferences. ?But music is a continuum, and it is important wherever you are on that continuum,? DuPertuis said. ?No one is born without some degree of musical skill. And nobody ever becomes a completely perfect musician. So when I approach music with a 10-year-old student, I look for ways to show them how important music can be for them.? ?I?ve worked in a number of different districts, and it is incredibly refreshing to work in Davis,? DuPertuis added. ?It was in Davis that I found there was a value in the community for the teacher as an artist ? not just a music artist, but as a teacher in the classroom assessing who is getting the information, and how the teacher can assess to see that students are getting it. I think that teaching is an art. And I didn?t find that until I got to Davis.? DuPertuis added that he appreciates the value that the community has placed on music education. ?I think Davis parents say ?This is what I want for my kid? ? and they do it,? DuPertuis said. ?Passing ballot measures, going to school board meetings.? This year, DuPertuis is working part-time, working with elementary students at Patwin, North Davis and Marguerite Montgomery schools. He also works with the all-city elementary band, which has performed at other schools as well. DuPertuis said he likes to help his music students learn that as band members ?working together, we can achieve things that we cannot achieve alone. You learn to understand the responsibility of knowing that you have to play your part right for the group to sound good. And on the other side, you?re trusting that the others are going to learn their part to make you sound good.? After he leads a successful performance, he likes take a minute to tell the students: ?Do you see what we just did? When we started (at the beginning of the school year), you couldn?t play any of those pieces (that you just performed).? When he retires at the end of the current school year, DuPertuis plans to travel. ?I?m looking forward to seeing Bryce Canyon National Park in the winter. And I want to see the East Coast in the fall. And Mardi Gras in New Orleans.? Mr. S ---------------------------- Thomas Slabaugh II Director of Bands Davis Senior High School tslabaugh at djusd.net Date: April 29, 2013 10:22:50 PM PDT Subject: Celebrate May's Sunshine Thurs., May 2nd, 7:30 pm at 415-2nd St. Yes, Music Lovers, we are celebrating May's sunshiney arrival! So you should add to your special must-attend May events, the ThursdayLive! May 2nd concert, 7:30 pm, at 415-2nd featuring our homegrown jammers theHoney Badgers and West of Next, a group appearing for the first time at ThursdayLive! And there's no need to find a May Pole to dance around, because--between the Honey Badgers and West of Next--you'll be able to dance your sweet little pagan Mayday hearts out upstairs at 415-2nd. Our concert headliners, the popular Honey Badgers, are a group of musicians who are all affiliated with Watermelon Music. They play a mix of Blues-based music including Rhythm and Blues. Jeff Simons, co-owner of Watermelon Music, commands bass and vocals; Ron Cowden, also a co-owner of Watermelon Music, cuts loose on guitar and vocals; Leo Adamian rips on drums and not surprisingly manages the drum department at Watermelon Music; Scott Morris holds forth on guitar and vocals and is a guitar instructor at Watermelon Music. West of Next, this concert's opening group, was described in the Sacramento Bee as "...highly recommended to the discriminating listener. No gimmicks. A surf bop journey through the musical heart of the United States." At their ThursdayLive! debut performance, you can expect West of Next to play wide-ranging musical forms from Appalachian ballads to Blues, Zydeco, Western Swing and Honky Tonk. And all their fresh songs and instrumentals have been arranged from a jazz musician's point of view. That jazz musician is David Shapireau, a highly experienced arranger-guitarist who shares the "twin guitar sound" in West of Next with Steve Randall, a musician voted Best Guitarist in Sacramento News and Reviews. Paul Knutsen holds down the bass position in West of Next, while Tony Dey on drums rounds out this quartet. And don't forget: all ThursdayLive! concerts are free, family-friendly, and wheelchair accessible. Drinks on sale range from soft to beer and wine. Shows begin at 7:30 pm and, until closing at approximately 10:00 pm, attendees can come and leave as they choose. All ages are welcome, and donations for worthy causes--including the featured musicians--are always appreciated. This first-Thursday-of-the month music series, held in the upstairs hall at 415-2nd in Davis, is faithfully sponsored by the Davis Odd Fellows Music Committee and KDRT, Davis' finest FM radio station. So dust off your dancing shoes and prepare to cut one rug after another on Thursday, May 2nd starting 7:30 pm.
