The School Band & Orchestra Magazine has announced this year's annual essay contest: http://www.sbomagazine.com/essay-contest/

Deadline is December 31, and it seems that entries are to be posted online.  Scholarship prizes ($1000 check) are awarded to essay finalist students, and the school gets a contribution of musical equipment from music merchants.

Last year, a 7th grade Harper orchestra student was one of the finalists, and the essay was really quite good.  You can read it here: http://www.sbomagazine.com/163333/essay/2012-essay-contest-winners/

I would think that any music student would probably have some background to address the prompt.  Note that there are two categories -- grades 9-12 and grades 4-8.
