Parents we need you to join in the Playathon fun by signing up to volunteer, play in the band or conduct during family/friends/alumni hour. Whether you have time to help a lot or a little, we could use your assistance to make this event a success. Playathon will take place this year beginning at 7:00 p.m. Friday Jan 20 at the Emerson Junior High Commons with desserts for families and a chance to participate in a "classic" cake-walk while you listen to the combined bands play with family, friends and guest conductors. After families leave, students will remain overnight (with chaperones) to participate in music sight-reading/rehearsal, musical activities and time to eat, dance and relax with their friends. Collecting pledges from extended family, neighbors and friends is a great motivator to participate all night....and it helps defray the costs of the upcoming combined band trip to San Diego and/or the Jazz Band trip to New Orleans. (Pledge forms were sent out just before Christmas on the list serve and copies will be sent home with students in a few days). But even without pledges, this is a great opportunity for the students to have fun with music and get to know all the students in the bands. If you would like to help, to bring baked goods or sign up to play or conduct, please visit this site at Sign-up Genius www.SignUpGenius.com/go/70A0848AAAB2F4-playathon or contact Jeanette Vance at dhsbbpublicity at gmail.com . As I have learned, airlines like to keep you on your toes when planning group travel, and suddenly change your flights on you with little regard to how it might affect your group.... And as such, I received a call from United informing us that our return flight had indeed been changed..........with us returning at midnight on the 15th (vs. the original 11:20 pm return) But no worries - after a bit of searching we now have new return flights for our group which are much better than even our original flights were. Our CURRENT FLIGHTS for the Jazz Band New Orleans Trip are: Departure (unchanged): April 10, 2012: Depart SMF (sacramento) at 2:50 pm United flight # 448. Connects through Denver to flight # 947, and arrives ultimately MSY (New Orleans) at 11:04 p.m. local time. Return (changed) April 15th, 2012 Depart MSY 2:55 p.m. United flight # 630. Connects through Denver to flight # 375, ultimately arriving SMF at 8:02 p.m. I know some of you parents have used your miles to arrange your own flights which may now be a bit different than what your child is flying, but likely all of us will have flight changes before April anyhow, as this seems to be the norm with air travel these days unfortunately. Anyhow, for now at least, these are our times. And getting back 3 hrs earlier than planned for the group is a welcome gift with school the next day. Katie PS: Many have been asking about $$ for this trip, and John H. should be getting a note out about that soon. Suffice it to say that we will be paying the remainder of the airline bill in Mid Feb. so most of the costs will need to be covered by then. Overall cost per student for this trip is not yet known, but best guess puts it around $1200...? -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... In case you didn't receive them, they are also attached here. We would like to have the permission slips returned to the band room by Tues Jan 17 in order to streamline the check-in process. We will also accept them the night of the event. Students must turn in a signed permission slip in order to participate. Please encourage your student to ask extended family and friends for their financial support for this music marathon evening...even small pledges add up to help defray the cost of the spring trips for the jazz band or the combined band. Pledge forms and funds should be turned in at check-in. The schedule for the evening is described in the attached information sheet. We would love to have parents come for the first part of the evening (at 7 pm Friday Jan 20), to listen to the family/friends/alumni hour and join in with the band to play along or to have a chance to conduct ( your $25 pledge on your student's pledge form is all that is needed to join in with the band!). If you are not a "wannabe" musician, you can still enjoy some dessert and coffee or tea, and buy a ticket to participate in the cakewalk....you might win a wonderful dessert to take home to your family. After family and friends leave, band students will remain to spend the rest of the night in a music marathon....sight-reading and rehearsing some fun and exciting music with guest conductors, punctuated by breaks to relax with friends, dance and enjoy snacks. They will be ready to be picked up at 7 a.m. on Saturday a.m. Jan 21. Monday Jan 23 is a secondary holiday for students (teacher work day) in between the first and second semester, so they will have a good opportunity to rest and relax before the first week of the next semester. We could use your help to make this event a success. Please visit the Sign-up Genius site at http://www.signupgenius.com/go/70A0848AAAB2F4-playathon to see how you can help. We need a few people on the weekend of Jan 14-15-16 (Martin Luther King weekend) to assemble music folders...if you would like to help with this please contact Jeanette Vance at jenatzle at ucdavis.edu or 758-2956 ASAP with your time availability on that weekend. The other jobs will take place at the event on Friday Jan 20-Sat Jan 21. If you are a school district employee, we could especially use your help as a chaperone for part of the evening. You can also help by contributing desserts or cakes for the cake walk, by loaning a Twister game, or by bringing some household materials that we will use for a costume creation contest (newspaper, paper bags, toilet paper, masking tape). If you are a sophomore or junior parent, and think you might like to help carry on the tradition for next year, please let Jeanette Vance know (jenatzle at ucdavis.edu, 758-2956) so that you can observe and learn the ropes this year. Listed below are the committees we'd like help with and a brief description of the responsibilities. If you have questions about any of these areas, please don't hesitate to ask. *Food/Dessert Coordinator. Coordinate volunteer sign-ups and dessert donations. *Facilities and Set-up. Help to coordinate facility set-up for event. Organize table rental and set- up on day of event. *Decorations. Help with decoration planning and set up. Most of the decoration planning is well underway, but we really need some back-up help for this committee. *Sound. Help to coordinate and set up sound equipment on day of event. *Publicity. Help with advertising and announcements for Coconut Grove *Tickets. Help with coordinating ticket sales, keeping track of reservations. We hope that you will consider helping out. This is a great way to meet other Band Parents. Coconut Grove is one of our major fundraisers and proceeds go to help off-set costs for students who participate and who will attend the band trips to San Diego and New Orleans. Pledge forms and pledges will be turned in at check-in. Please encourage your student to ask friends, neighbors, extended family for pledges to take advantage of this fundraising opportunity - funds will be earmarked to their own student accounting toward the band trips. We still need volunteers to help at Play-a-thon. You can sign up online at http://www.signupgenius.com/go/70A0848AAAB2F4-playathon , or you can look at the attached pdf copy of the sign-up list and email Jeanette Vance (jenatzle at ucdavis.edu) with a sign-up. We have particular need for the following: --Assembly of music into folders. Starting at 10 am Sat Jan 14 - ? Even if you can't come at the beginning, we may still need people later in the afternoon. --People to pick up donated pizzas and deliver to Emerson by ~9:15-9:30 pm. --Additional check-in helpers so the lines will move quickly --a certified school district employee to be there as one of the chaperones from 7 pm-11 pm. We have a volunteer to cover the rest of the evening. You can also help by loaning a Twister game, and by saving your newspapers and paper bags and bringing them at or before check-in Friday night for our costume creation contest. We will also gladly collect rolls of toilet paper and masking tape. Thanks for your help! Please plan to stay and listen from 7-9 during the family/friends/alumni Play-along. Better yet, dust off your instrument or your conducting baton and join us (for a $25 pledge to your student's account). Or just relax with some dessert, join in the cakewalk, and listen to our great guest conductor for that part of the evening, Eric Burger, a 1976 DHS alumnus who is a professional trombonist (he was the guest artist a couple years ago with the Jazz Band). Back before the holidays , I sent out a preliminary schedule. Most of the items on it are still accurate, we're just working on filling more of the details and costs. I don't have an exact cost yet, but it is anticipated to be around $1200 for the entire trip. Some people are traveling separately due to college visits and other reasons. I will have the breakout of the non-air version of the trip shortly. With initial airline & hotel payments already made, we need to start collecting moneys for the trip. Below is the recommended schedule of installments: $300 - Jan 15th $300 - Feb 7th $300 - Feb 25th Balance - Mar 15th The final payments for airlines and hotel are due March 12th. It looks like it is going to be a pretty neat trip. We have a variety of gigs lined up, Master's Classes at University of New Orleans, Swamp Tour, Ghost Tour of the French Quarter at night, Cemetery tour, a Great Party and other fun events. I know the status of most of the people, and there are just a couple that I need to talk with to confirm which students/parents/chaperones are going. (3 yrs ago the total cost per student was $525). Also, please come out and support the Play-A-Thon this Friday, 7:00 p.m., at Emerson Jr. High School. A total of your students trip credits from various fundraising activities during the year will be sent out by John Horn after the Play-A-Thon and Coconut Grove credits are tallied in March, before the 2nd (final) installment date. It needs all of our collective support to ensure that we are able to continue music in Davis at this superb level! The DHS Band Boosters officially support Measure C. Please help as much as you can. Cheers, ~JAH John Horn DHS Band Booster President ___________________________________ To All Music Boosters, Parents, Families, and Supporters: We are contacting you to ask that you join us as active volunteers in the campaign to renew our enacted parcel taxes. As many of you know, Measures Q and W will sunset in 2012 resulting in a 6.5 million dollar (or approximately 10 percent), loss to the school district?s overall budget. Both parcel taxes have been combined and are proposed to be renewed as one Parcel Tax ? Measure C. Schools and programs at all levels will be affected if the parcel tax isn?t renewed! More specifically in relation to the district music program, the whole elementary music program and several secondary music courses are currently paid for through Measure W and Q. Without passing Measure C, we will lose these programs, along with many, many others. We love our music programs in Davis, and none of us want to see any decrease in the ability for our children to be able to participate in music along with all of the other great opportunities that are currently being paid for through enacted parcel taxes. In an effort to help ?get out the vote,? the Yes on Measure C Campaign has setup a system of phonebanking and precinct walking?we are asking for your help with both efforts! The details and sign-up information are below. What?s at stake if Measure C doesn?t pass? You can find all the details on the Yes on Measure C website HERE, and as you review the details, we believe you will come to the same conclusion that we have. This tax continues to be critically important! C For Our Children, C For Our Community. Davis has a wonderful history of giving extra financial support to our schools . Local voters have approved a parcel tax for the past 25 years, and in these difficult times for public education, to continue being able to offer the width and depth of programs in the schools, we need the continued funding through passage of Measure C. We would like to encourage all parents and other concerned citizens to make sure that Measure C passes. We can show our dedication to every student?s strong education and our support for important instructional programs by working for the passage of this renewal. We need you! Positive voter turnout will be the primary factor in determining whether Measure C passes or fails. As a volunteer you will help TURN OUT THE YES VOTE by knocking on doors (precinct walking) and/or by calling supporters (phonebanking) to ask voters to ?mail-in? their ballots. Precinct walking involves picking up a packet at the Farmers? Market with all the details, script and handouts you need, knocking on 30-40 supporters doors for a few hours and turning in your contact sheet at the end of the day. Training will be provided the day you volunteer. Phonebanking involves being with other volunteers in several downtown real estate offices for a few hours and calling supporters. Your well-charged cell phone would be a great asset, but land lines will also be available. There will be a script for all volunteers to read from, so no one will have to make up what to say. Training will be provided at the start of each session. Details and timing for each volunteer opportunity can be found on the Yes on Measure C link above and Sign-Up Genius links below. All walking and phoning will be to likely or known YES voters, with the goal of helping to remind and encourage everyone to send in their YES vote. We also need you to spread the word. If you can help mobilize at least three friends or colleagues to volunteer for either walking or phoning or both, we can reach our supporters! Use all your social media tools, facebook, twitter, LinkedIn, to raise Measure C awareness with your friends. And, talk it up! Talk about the importance of the measure to your friends, family, neighbors, and those you know in the community! Feel free to pass this letter along to those you know who might want to help! Link to sign up for Precinct Walking - Fresh air and friends and no prior experience needed! Link to sign up for Phoning - It's easy and fun and no prior experience needed! Anyone can choose to sign up in the group or individually. Either way is great! There is no real shortcut to victory for Measure C. While the ?mail in? election procedure is relatively short and simple ? WE MUST GET PEOPLE TO VOTE YES AND RETURN THOSE BALLOTS BY MARCH 6. We?ll need the concerted effort of people who care about our schools if we are to succeed in this election. The risk of failure is too great! Our children are counting on us!! In spite of the weather, and the adventures and challenges it created (see the report in the upcoming newsletter), it was a successful evening. Special thanks go to Lynne Rumery (food/beverage coordinator), Luci Schmidl (check-in coordinator), John and Katie Horn (who helped with everything else), and chaperones (John Horn, Lyle Najita, John Weir, Tracy Skinner and Cindy True) who gave up big chunks of their evening and in some cases all night! Many other parents helped with set-up, check-in, tending the dessert table, pizza pick-up, clean-up, and donation/loans of food, beverages, and materials for the evening. What a great bunch of parents! Special thanks also to student Eli Smith, who did a superb job coordinating the dance music for breaks. And what a great group of band students!...They were cooperative, energetic, showed great imagination and creativity for the costume contest, and superb musicianship and respect for the guest conductors, even in the wee hours of the morning. Our efforts were supported by pizza contributions from local restaurants, including Round Table, Pizza Guys, Caffe Italia, Lamppost, Steve's Place and Woodstocks. Please patronize them and thank them for their support in these challenging economic times. There were a few items left at the end of the event, without identifying names.....a list follows. They will be brought to the band room Tuesday and placed in a Playathon box for pick-up. If you prefer to make other arrangements to get them, please contact Jeanette ( jenatzle at ucdavis.edu, or 530-219-0841).
