Message-ID: <5F3B7605B964B346A6658663BDDA5D5B017E631346@rrsmsx505.amr.corp.intel.com> Deadline for Measure A ballots is May 3rd (TODAY) and you need to physically drop your ballot in the ballot box at the Davis Public Library or at the County Elections Office in Woodland. If you haven't yet turned in your ballot and plan to, then it is in an envelope that looks like this: [cid:X.MA1.1303886627 at aol.com] The current proposed school budget for the 2011-12 school year calls for reducing the JH music program by about 11 classes, or about half of the JH music program. This would come about by reducing the 7th and 8th grade schedule to 6 periods. It likely means that not all 7th and 8th graders would be accommodated in the music program as has happened in the past. If Measure A passes, its funds would secure 7th period for 7th and 8th grade (including the music classes) for the two years of its duration. There are cuts to other programs proposed in the current draft budget that may also be funded if Measure A passes. Here is some further information about Measure A: http://www.djusd.net/district/measa/measa#frequently-asked-questions-about PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT YOU HAVE TURNED IN YOUR BALLOTS. It's time to think about what you will use to pack in for this trip. Suitcase size: We will be carrying our luggage onto the plane. There is a $25 per bag fee to check bags at the airport each way, so we are encouraging kids to pack light in a suitcase that can fit in the overhead compartment of the plane. If your child has oversized luggage that isn't going to fit on the plane then they may send their luggage on the instrument truck that will be departing Wed evening for Victoria. If they do this, they will still need an overnight bag with everything they will need until we meet that instrument truck in Canada Friday night. Remember NO DRESS BLACKS on this trip. That should help tremendously with packing. When packing, remember to check the list sent home in the forms packet of items to bring. Weather could be rainy or chilly so pack accordingly. In 2008, we actually had some hot weather there. You never know. Also, if your child is prone to motion sickness on the boat or bus, you may want to think about those pressure wrist bands for sea-sickness, or some mints/lemon drops to suck on during the rides. The ferry passage can get a little choppy depending on the weather. We will be taking a total of 3 ferry boat rides each about 1.5 hrs during this trip. Remember: All liquids must be less than 3.4 oz to be carried onto an airplane, and must all fit in one quart sized zip lock baggie. This includes anything sent for dinner from home. When planning the bag dinner, don't include soft foods such as yogurt or applesauce or they are subject to the baggie rule. Drinks and water bottles may be purchased on the other side of security before boarding the plane. Below is the specific baggage information from the Alaska Airlines website. Carry-On Baggage The following baggage rules apply only when traveling on flights operated by Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air. If your itinerary includes travel on another airline, please check that airline's Web site for their specific baggage rules. You're allowed one carry-on bag, which can measure up to 10" H x 17" W x 24" L (25 x 43 x 61 cm) including wheels and handles, plus one personal item, such as a purse, briefcase or laptop computer. At least one of the items should be stowed under the seat in front of you. Every effort will be made to accommodate your carry-on in the passenger cabin. Acceptance of carry-on baggage is subject to space availability on the aircraft at the time you board. In the event adequate space is not available, your carry-on bag may be checked for no charge to baggage claim at your final destination. Items exceeding the free carry-on allowance will be charged $25 per piece and tagged for delivery to baggage claim at your destination. Liquids, Gels, or Aerosols (3.4 oz. (100ml) or Less _packed per TSA regulations_ (http://www.tsa.gov/311/) ) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Thanks again for all your support. Cheers, ~JAH DHS Band Boosters Measure A passed! It was a squeaker, though. 67.2% yes 32.8% no It needed 2/3 to pass (66.7%). Thank you all very much for your support. This will, among other things, guarantee funding for 7 periods for 7th and 8th period, and should allow for optimal participation in the JH music program. Please don't take this opportunity for granted, even more especially given how close the vote was. This was an extraordinary election for Davis in many ways, given the state of the economy, locally in particular. Please be sure to thank all of your parents and families at every public opportunity. I wish the music program could be more fully sustained out of the district's general fund budget (instead of parcel taxes), but in times like this, even keeping the program viable and intact is a real blessing. Unbelievable! I have attached a trip itinerary. There may be some minor changes as we get closer, but nothing should be too different from this plan. Please note a few things: Students will bring instruments and music stands to the band room for loading onto the truck on Wed. May 18th. This is the day the truck is being packed after school and will begin it's trek to Victoria. Students may also bring oversized luggage or an extra bag or suit bag if desired for loading on the truck during this time. We are encouraging everyone to pack light (they have to be able to carry ALL their stuff after all) but if someone just has to have extra things, they can put it on the truck. Students will check in officially for the trip at DHS 30 - 45 min. before their carpools will leave for the airport on Thurs. May 19th. During this check in we will be delivering the trip Tee Shirt (to be worn the next day, so kids will need to save space in their carry on for this item), and ensuring that they have their passport or other official travel documents with them as well. Meds will be checked in with the nurse too. PLEASE don't be late as there will be a lot of kids to check off, and not much time to do everything. FOOD: On Thursday we are asking kids to bring a bag dinner that will make it through security at the airport. We are not in the regular terminal, which means there are not many places to obtain food once we arrive at the airport as you might be used to. The short flights will likely also not have food to purchase. So unless your child really likes peanuts, be sure they have enough of a dinner that won't get tossed at security (no liquids, yogurt, soft fruits...) Also remember that we have a concert the day after we return, but the truck will not be returning until just hours before that concert in Central Park. So make sure your child has some casual blacks to wear for the concert - perhaps something saved at home for this purpose? Or an extra set of clothes packed in their carry on when returning so they can access it quickly. Less than a week to go until our band trip! This is a reminder for everyone to be sure to check their individual cell phone plans and know what charges your child will incur if they use their phone, even to receive incoming calls and texts while in Canada. Something I had not thought of since our last trip, is the prevalence of smart phones now with data plans. If that is not turned off, the data roaming charges can add up quickly - and these phones , unless deactivated, automatically will be updating email, face book, news etc., all the time. Some kids use the phone to listen to the radio or watch U-Tube or visit web sites - all of which will add up quickly. Some plans charge fees of $15 - $100 just for using international data roaming then additional charges for the amount used - so definitely check on your plan! We will be instructing the students to turn off the data roaming feature and their phones before we cross the boarder, using them only as needed to contact a chaperone or for specific calls home, unless otherwise instructed by their parent. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I will deliver the folders to the parent drivers who are only doing the returning carpool trip. DEPARTING CARPOOL DRIVERS INFO. * Group 1 travelers meet at DHS at 1:30 - 1:45. The car drivers need to arrive at DHS by 1:45 and the cars will depart at 2:15. * Group 2 and 3 travelers meet at DHS at 3:00 - 3:15. Students should begin packing tonight. Anything they can't fit into their carry on luggage can be put in another bag to go onto the truck. Truck is departing TOMORROW, so bring any items for the truck to school between 2 and 5 p.m. on Wednesday. 2. Remember to pack an airport friendly dinner that can make it through security, preferably with no peanuts to help out our students with allergies. Airport security will toss any liquids or soft/gel like foods. Pack hard fruits, sandwiches, bagels, crackers but leave the yogurt, bananas and juice boxes at home. We are not in the big terminal, so there will be limited food to purchase at the airport in Sacramento. Kids can also bring an empty water bottle to fill on the other side of security if they like, or may be able to purchase water or drinks once on the other side. 3. Lists have been posted at school so kids can find their departure group if they have forgotten. These were also sent out in emails around the end of March so check your email box if you can't remember which group your child is in. Group 1 meets at DHS for trip check in between 1:30 - 1:45, and Groups 2 and 3 will meet for check in at DHS between 3 and 3:15 pm. on THURSDAY. If your child must bring their luggage at the beginning of school on Thursday, Mr. Lange has said that they can leave it along the wall of the band room until check-in, then retrieve it before officially checking in. Remember there will be other groups using the room that morning so items need to be out of the way, and will not be officially "secured". 4. The weather in Canada continues to change. As of today it appears to be about half rainy days, half sunny days during our stay. Always the high temperature will be in the mid 50's - just about our current temp today, so rain or shine, it will be chilly. Plan accordingly. 5. PASSPORTS or birth certificate with picture ID: Your student should have these with them on THURSDAY. Thank you to all the parents who have volunteered to help with check in on Wed and Thursday, driving to and from the airport, at the trip committee meetings all year, and those brave enough to go on this trip with 126 teenagers! We have one fantastic group of Band Boosters! Katie Horn -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Band sounded great and their music carried across the water. Nice venue. We took a big group photo on steps after the performance. The Jazz Band played right afterwards down by the water. Very well received and as always a swinging great performance. The next Jazz Band after us was short on trumpets, so two of our guys filled in and sight read with them. At night the whole group spent 3 hours at Crystal Pool, a huge indoor pool with diving boards, a rope swing into the water (we would NEVER see that at a Davis pool), chicken fights in the water, water basketball, frisbee games and keep-away, "surfing" like games on pool toys, hot tub, sauna... They are VERY tired now and all is quiet at 11:45. Tomorrow we are off to Butchart Gardens for another concert. All is well way up north. We have breakfast served in our own conference area each morning. That is nice and convenient although the same exact thing each day-scrambled eggs, breakfast potatoes, bacon and toast. Only a few kids are suddenly "vegan" as then the hotel will make oatmeal with syrup and fruit. It is the only fruit I have seen since arriving. We went to Butchard Gardens today. A great concert that was well attended. For the swing music songs a couple drummers went out and danced with some audience members (including me-what fun!) I was pretty surprised that all these teenagers seemed to enjoy a very large and impressive garden. They were strolling around in groups for about 2 hours taking lots of pictures and just chatting. The sun even peeked out some. Students had tonight to go downtown and have dinner on their own. The city is friendly and clean and not really all that crowded considering the parade and celebration is tomorrow. I think the kids are enjoying a chance to get out of their own. They are super good about checking out and in of the hotel and staying together in groups and returning before their curfew. Once again parents from other bands and other hotel guests have commented how well behaved our students are and I agree. What a great group! I chatted with a few people in the audience-one was a fellow from Romania who heard our band from his office window and had to come out and hear the live music that his Dad used to sing to him and another was a pleasant older woman who thought it was wonderful that kids these days still learn and perform all different types of music. It is still raining and even though there is a chance that it could stop at concert time, the ground conditions would not allow it. It has been raining continuously and the ground is soaked. The chairs would sink into the ground, plugging in the electric base on a wet surface is not a brilliant move, and the chance that more showers will hit us all contribute to the decision to not play. So we had a wonderful trip the past 5 days in Victoria, and the bands sounded GREAT during all their performances. Thank you to the people who offered to sit with the chairs, we won't need you to do that now. Also thank you to the people who signed up to help unload the truck tonight after the performance. We won't need you to do that either. The truck is at the band room now being unloaded. Cheers, ~JAH -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... From the fundraisers all year long, to the monthly planning meetings, the brave chaperones who traveled with us, as well as the road crew students who really put in some overtime....all went smoothly and led to a wonderful experience for all. I heard many comments from folks during our performances, but have included one note from a fan below for all to enjoy. Imagine, we dodged the rain and made it through every one of our Canadian performances, only to get rained out in Davis! Go figure.... Thanks again for everyone working together to pull off such a fabulous trip! Katie Horn Subj: What a wonderful band ! Hello Katie and John I hope the Davis Band enjoyed their trip to Victoria because many others who had the pleasure of listening to them certainly were glad they came to our sleepy city. I went to Butchart Gardens on the Sunday and was absolutely amazed at how good the band was ? certainly FAR beyond your average high school band ? simply excellent. However, my husband went down on the Monday to listen to them in front of the Legislative Buildings and his gast was utterly flabbered! He heard the jazz band at 3pm (but unfortunately wasn?t able to stay for the 4pm performance). He was thinking what a superior jazz/blues band they were but many others happened to chat to him and made the same comment. He spoke to one chap who said he organized jazz bands in the city and that the Davis Band was far superior than most of the gigs he booked! My husband also happened to chat to numerous Americans (he?s a gregarious chap), quite a number from California, who were not aware that the band was playing in Victoria. Every single American my husband spoke to were absolutely thrilled that such a band still exists (bearing in mind the economy and all the funding cuts), let alone of such a high caliber. They were all enthralled and very, very impressed. The city of Victoria was very lucky to have the pleasure of their music. I hope you will pass on our congratulations to the band for a simply splendid job. Regards Al & Caroline Graham Victoria -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... URL:
