I will have forms available in class next week, but I have attached the pledge sheet form for those of you who would like to start now. As the pledge sheet indicates, we prefer a donation collected ahead of the Playathon as opposed to a pledge that will have to be collected afterwards so donations are generally not based on the number of hours played. Because of this, we have provided two forms this year. If you are staying all night, use the first form (Staying the Night). However, if you do not plan to stay the night, please use the second form (Leaving Early) that indicates this fact so that there is no confusion as to what the donation is for. Pledge sheets and moneys collected should be brought to the Playathon. Remember, all donations that you collect will be credited directly to your account for the Spring Band Tour to Disneyland. I have also attached the 2010 Permission Slip and Code of Conduct Form. Please note that all students participating in the Playathon are required to fill this out; even those not planning to stay past the concert. It has space for parents to let us know when they expect their students to be dismissed. Please bring these to the band room by January 19th. If you have any questions, please let me know. The Jazz Band is signed up, has the timeslots and will be playing during the Disneyland Spring Trip. Mr. Lange is in sync with this and expects the Jazz Band to play there as well. There are several members that have a conflict and will not be able to make the trip, but that should not affect the groups ability to put on excellent performances. After all, every member of the Jazz Band is quite an accomplished musician, otherwise they would not be in the group. So there is no doubt that the group can adjust appropriately. So based on that, please make sure that you get signed up for the Spring Trip and get your deposits in by the 1/15/10 deadline. We are looking forward to a fun and exciting Spring Band Trip. They wondered if there was a special room rate for the hotel that they could get for being associated with our group, but not actually part of the band trip as chaperones. I asked our hotel contact this, and unfortunately, there is no special rate available. We did secure an excellent room rate for the band, but it is only for our group and the rooms we book for those students and chaperones on our trip. She did recommend however, that you go online and click on the advanced purchase rate. It will be 25% less than their best available rate if you call and book that way. It is non-refundable however, so only if you are certain you are going is this a good plan. You can check all the rates at the hotel on their website: _www.esanaheim.com_ (http://www.esanaheim.com) Also, there are 2 Embassy Suites in Anaheim. We are at the Embassy Suites NORTH. It is about 6 miles from Disneyland. If you want to come and see the band perform in Disneyland, there are also lots of "Good Neighbor" hotels you will find if you search Disneyland.com that will be within walking distance and very reasonably priced. If you do have pledges, remember that 100% of pledged dollars go directly to the student accounts to cover their travel expenses to Disneyland. #2: Students, we need a sound system for the break room. If anyone has a portable system they can bring, please let me know so that I can be sure this is covered - CONTACT sweisker at ucdavis.edu Parents, I can still use a few people to bring refreshments to the concert; i.e., snacks, drinks, and bottles water. For breakfast, I believe we have bagels coming, but could use some cream cheese, fruit, and orange juice. I think we are also still looking for someone with a percolator so we can have hot water for tea and hot chocolate. It sounds like we are going to need it with no heat in the MPR. CONTACT sweisker at ucdavis.edu IF YOU CAN HELP! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- #3: IT'S TRUE! NO HEAT will be available for the MPR during the Playathon event. The DHS administration has informed us that the heating system will not be repaired in time for our annual event. BAND STUDENTS AND PARENT VOLUNTEERS ARE URGED TO PREPARE FOR COLD TEMPERATURES - wear layers of warm clothing and consider bringing blankets and/or sleeping bags. Woodwinds players, consider bringing plastic instruments if available for overnight. The organizing parents for Playathon will keep us abreast of the situation...stay tuned. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- #4: message from Stephanie Hunt: The Davis High School Bands 22nd Playathon will take place on the weekend of January 23-24 in the MPR at DHS. This event has become a favorite of the Band students as they play and party their way through 12 hours of fun. Pledged dollars go directly to the student accounts to cover their travel expenses to Disneyland. Pledges are NOT required - All band students are invited and encouraged to attend Playathon with or without pledges. Like all "A-Thon" events, students are earning money for doing something longer than most people would consider, in this case playing their instruments. The Play-a-thon begins with a concert with each band performing in turn, Concert Band at 7:30, Symphonic Band at 8:15 and Jazz Band at 9:00. At 10:00 p.m. all of the bands combine for the Parents and Friends Hour. At this time additional pledges are collected from anyone who would like to play with or conduct the band. Guest conductors and guest performers typically include band family members and local dignitaries. If you have always dreamed of conducting or performing with the High School Bands this is an opportunity for you. Contact Sandra Weisker to sign up for this unique opportunity at (530) 756-2759 or . The period from 12:00 midnight to 6:00 a.m. is reserved just for the band students to sight-read new music and prepare for a morning concert surprise which begins at 7:00 a.m. So come and enjoy an evening of music and return for the sunrise concert. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... There is no district supplied heat in the MPR, due to the old heater being broken and the repair plan unclear. We will use some electric radiant heaters strategically placed around the MPR to take the "edge off" the chill. But we need some help from you if possible. Here is a note from Sandra: After exploring other options, we have decided that the best way to bring warmth to the Playathon is with several radiant heaters set up around the MPR. If you have one that you would be willing to lend us for the night, please let me know. We will also need extension cords. Thanks for your help, Sandra Weisker sweisker at ucdavis.edu 530-908-0203 530-756-2759 Assuming that we get a sufficient number of heater to help, we will continue as planned. If for some reason this is not enough, and by the end of the 10:00-11:00 pm concert session everyone is just too cold, we may stop the playathon and put out calls to the parents to come pick up the kids. This will be done between 11:00 - 11:30 if it is going to happen. Personally, I think there will be enough excitement, energy and heat to keep everyone going. But wanted to let you know what the possibilities are. Thanks for your understanding. Cheers, ~JAH -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
