Band Parents, ? The Officers of the DHS Band Boosters and Mr. Lange have been watching the recent outbreak of the Swine flu, especially now that Holmes Junior High has been temporarily closed for 2 weeks.? Our San Diego trip is planned in about 2 weeks. ? Although the Swine flu has resulted in 1 death in the United states (as of 5/1/09), the disease is generally a mild illness.? Every year we have other viruses (influenza A and B, parainfluenza, RSV, etc) that float around the United States and our community that have killed hundreds of patients, but this does not make the public news.? ? As a physician, I feel we should not be panicking about this particular flu.? However, we should not be disregarding it either, and we should be taking reasonable preventive measures.? In my opinion, the most important preventative measure we can take right now is not to send your student to school if he/she is sick with any type of flu or cold symptoms.? That goes for you parents and your work as well. ? I have been looking at the Center for Disease Control (CDC) to keep up on their recommendations.? Yolo County Health department and the California State Health Department have essentially been following the CDC guidelines.? At this time we are not cancelling the San Diego trip.? The CDC has stated they are not recommending that domestic travel be cancelled (see web site below) ? I know we have been looking forward to this trip, and we will go if it is safe.? However, we will continue monitoring the CDC and regional public health guidelines.? I have included CDC websites for additional information. ? They will be going to University of San Diego, where they will be meeting up with a variety of music Masters for instructional sessions. During the 1st hour: The Jazz Band will be playing on stage first, working with the Jazz Master Adam Johnson, an energetic (money making) jazz performer and improvisationalist. While the Jazz Band is playing the Concert band will be splitting up into sections to work on a chart. Brass (High/Low) will work with Timothy Smith, the acting Principal of Trombone of the San Diego Symphony. Percussion will work with Jason Ginter, the Principal of Percussion, San Diego Symphony Clarinets, Oboe, Bassoon will work with Terri Tunnicliff, the Second Clarinet, San Diego Symphony Flutes will work with Jane Masur, a well known high level flute instructor Saxophones will work with Chief Warrant Officer Edward Hayes, Director and Officer of the "Third Marine Aircraft Wing Band" in San Diego The Symphonic Band will enjoy the Jazz Band stage session. During the 2nd hour: The Concert Band will take the stage and work with Dr. Angela Yeung, the Director of Music, University of San Diego The Symphonic Band will split up into sections as described above to work on their assigned piece. The Jazz Band will join the symphonic band masters sessions where it makes sense. The remaining members will enjoy the Concert Band's stage session. During the 3rd hour: The Symphonic Band (with appropriate Jazz Band members) will take the stage and work on their piece as a group with Dr. Yeung. The Concert Band will take a seat and enjoy the Symphonic band's stage session. All in all, the students will have a neat opportunity to work with some highly qualified musical masters. Should be fun. Cheers, ~JAH -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... For the health and safety of all students and chaperones attending our San Diego trip, we are requesting that everyone refrain from using any scented, fragrant products while traveling on the busses. This would include perfumes, aftershave, colognes, lotions, scented sunscreens, essential body oils, etc. The impact that fragrances might have on others during the long, enclosed bus trips outweigh any possible benefits. We have multiple members of our group with severe asthma, allergies, and migraines. Medical evidence has shown that fragrances have the ability to actually alter the flow of blood in the brain, effect our central nervous system, trigger asthma attacks and worsen the symptoms by decreasing airflow in the lungs. We originally were targeting to have this year's trip cost between $450-550. There were many variables that needed to be worked out, and most were finalized within the last month. The total cost of the trip came in at $520 per student. So we feel pretty good about keeping it within the cost target and not running it up to the max level. In addition we were able to add many more of the meals for everyone, so there really are only a couple that the kids are going to be "on their own" (like dinner in SeaWorld) and need to get lunch or dinner. So that is a big plus. We also added the Master's Classes, which is an afternoon of focused musical training by professional musicians. It doesn't come cheap, but we did get a good deal, and the band boosters thought that this was an important (& neat) thing to do. Now because many of the students did a great job of fundraising, and because we were targeting to be able to cover the $550 max cost, there are a bunch of people that will either be getting some money back, or will have the opportunity to roll that money forward to next year, in their student's account. There will be a separate email going out to those affected in about a week. We are down to two days before the trip, and in know everyone is really looking forward to it. It should be a blast. Don't forget to bring your lunch for Friday on the bus. Cheers, ~JAH -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... He was resting comfortably. I told her that I was getting lots of inquiries about him and well wishes for both Richard and his entire family. She said that meant so much to Richard and that the vibes of our "Band Family" are helping to lift his spirits. They don't know when he will be discharged yet, but if I hear anything I will pass it along. Not only is this a free concert to thank the community for their support, but is a unique experience to listen to music composed by students. Performers in the Jazz Club under the direction of Adam Jenkins are inventive musicians that enjoy free improvisation and experimentation with all sorts of instruments and music from the classic jazz greats to the most modern. The Davis High School Jazz Combo with Issac Bunch, John Hatamiya, Neil Heaton, Chris Hunt and John Miller have a spectacular program of well known jazz greats with new twists on their interpretations and arrangements. This is a once-in-a-life-time concert as many of the performers will be graduating.
