Dear Band Parents:

The PlayAThon is fast approaching.  On Saturday, January 24th, your students will begin a 12-hour Playathon, during which they will play with the band for 45 minutes out of every hour around the clock.  From 7:30 until 9:45 pm, you can hear the various bands perform.  From 10 until 10:45, for a mere $25 (which goes into your student's account towards the band trip), you have the opportunity to bring your own instrument and sit in with the band or to conduct the band.  If you have never conducted, you should try it; its great fun!

Now, for some last minute volunteer opportunities.  During the concerts, from 7 to 9 pm, we will have a table with desserts and other goodies for the families to enjoy during the concert.  Anything left over will go to the students to munch on during their all-night vigil.  We still need a few people to bring those goodies-baked goods, soda, or ice in ice chests.  If you can provide one of these items, please let me know.

I, also, still need 2 to 4 people to sit at the table during the concert and oversee the food and the donations basket.  So if you are willing to help with this, again, let me know.

which includes entrance to all events on Saturday and a printed schedule.

Hello all you band parents!

The Playathon is fast approaching. I hope your student has been collecting donations for the event, if not a pledge form is attached. This is a great way to pay for the trip to San Diego with the band. Also attached is the Permission Slip. Please read, sign and return the form to band class by Thursday of this week. 

Quick reiteration: The check-in for Playathon is from 6:45 to 7:15 Saturday. Please bring your pledge slip and all donations to the check-in table, organized by last name. If you haven't already done so, you may turn in permission slip and/or t-shirt money. Bring food to share (concert-drinks, jazz-water, symphonic-snacks) as well as sleeping bag and pillow, just in case. Pizza will be served at 10:30 pm and Bagels at 6:30 am. Concerts begin at 7:30 pm Saturday night and the Final Concert is 7:00 am Sunday morning.

DHS BB Parents,

You may remember last year's Coconut Grove event was exceedingly successful.? This is one of our events that includes students from our community - junior high school bands, Jazz Cats, Sax by Popular Demand.? It is a community builder.? The committee organizing this event has been working very hard to make the event as successful as last year.? However, we do not have enough people to run this event yet and we are asking for your help if you are not already signed up.

1.? We need more volunteers to help with very concrete jobs.? Most of these jobs do not involve a major committment and are very specific in the amount of time - help prepare hors d'oeuvres?or desserts, clean up, etc.

2.? Offering products or service for the silent auction.? Possible items include baskets, weekend trips to a vacation home, etc.

3.? If your work for or know a business that donates money or products to nonprofit organizations, would you ask if the business would consider supporting us through this event.? One specific request is if you work for PG+E.

We are working on pulling together all the people going on the San Diego Band Trip in order to lock down the number of hotel rooms.
So far, I have heard &/or have deposits from 120 families, which is great, thank you.

Hello all,
Just a reminder about Playathon tonight. Please remind your student to check in between 6:45 and 7:15 . The band room will be open from 6:00 to 7:00 if they need access. Please bring:

Instrument and Pep Band Music
Pledge Sheet
Collected Pledges (Checks to DHS Band Boosters)
Permission Slip (If not already turned in, some will be available there.)
Note from parent if the student will be leaving early.
Food to Share:     concert: juice or soda
                            symphonic: snacks
                            jazz: bottled water
Sleeping bag and pillow, if desired.
Games (label with your name) for break room.
IF a t-shirt was ordered and not paid for, bring $12 in check (DHS Band Boosters) or cash.

The students' food, instrument cases, games, sleeping bags will go into room M2, which is just south of the MPR. We need everyone checked in and ready to play (or listen) to the Concert band at 7:30.

There will also be snacks for the audience in the MPR.

If you plan to play with the band at 11:00, please bring your instrument. If you plan to conduct (it's fun, give it a try) we can loan you a baton. It's well worth the $25 donation. Just a reminder that all funds collected on the pledge sheets go directly into your student's account to pay for the band trip to San Diego. This is a great opportunity to allow those supportive friends and family a chance to help out.

We hope to see you at the 7:00 am concert Sunday morning, after which there will be some help needed with putting things away, including some sleepy teenagers and chaperones who need to be put to bed.

In four weeks, the DHS Band Boosters will host An Evening at the Coconut Grove.  It's an essential fundraising event for the DHS band programs as well as a great time to get to know other families and supporters of Davis youth music programs while listening to some great music, enjoying tasty food and drink, and perusing treasures in our silent auction.  It is not to be missed.


YOUR HELP IS NEEDED

Later this week, students will have the opportunity to sign up to help put the event together including making decorations and serving our guests throughout the evening.  The money they earn for the hours they work will go directly to their individual student accounts to help pay for their upcoming trips.
 
We also need parent support for this event to 
o      make a dessert or appetizer (we'll provide you with the recipes)
o      decorate and
o      help in the kitchen at the event.   
Some of you have signed up, but we need more help.

All,

The Concert, Symphonic & Jazz bands did a great job this weekend at the Playathon & the Folsom Jazz festival!

Thanks to all the parent and student volunteers for all the long hours and excellent effort.
The students remained very energetic the entire evening (mostly) :).

Big Thanks to Susan & Sandra for all their efforts in making the Playathon such a successful event.
Also another great big thanks to John & Chris for all their efforts on directing all night long, and getting all the music together.
I think the band still had another 6+ hours worth of great music that was not even touched.
The students also fundraised over $5,000 dollars which will be credited toward their accounts.
THANKS GUYS & GALS.

For all parents and family that came to either the evening concert or the 7am concert, you were treated to some of the great music that makes the Davis music program one of the finest in the land!  For those of you who weren't able to be there, you missed a great time.  BUT......

There are more opportunities coming.
We have Coconut Grove coming Feb 28th, which is a perfect opportunity to help out with some aspect of the event, or at least getting your tickets to come enjoy an evening of music, food, entertainment, socializing, and bidding (auctions & silent auctions).  Don't miss this event!

Make sure that you and your students take advantage of these opportunities to offset some of the costs, and have a fun time doing it.

Again, great job this weekend to all that participated, helped & enjoyed.

Hello band parents,

The kids were so amazing at Playathon. Unlike other years, the vast majority of those who stayed the night did not sleep at all. This after a week of finals, SAT's and Folsom Jazz Festival! The kids had great attitudes, too. It seemed to all of us that the night (and the early morning hours) went quickly.

We are getting an order for additional Playathon t-shirts, since there were students (and two adult volunteers) who wanted the shirt, but did not pre-order. If we can get 12 shirts, the cost will be $17.50 each, and currently we have an order for 10. If you want to order a shirt, please send me an email with the student name and size of shirt. I will get back to you with the final cost, as it is lower per shirts with larger orders. Attached is a pdf with the shirt graphics.

All of you know our DHS Jazz Band is doing very well, and I hope you feel?your son's or daughter's?excitment for this band.? For those of you who were not present during the after-performance clinic at the Folsom Jazz Festival, the ajudicator had great suggestions?for the band, but just as important?he was extremely impressed with their performance.? Our students walked away very happy with the Festival, but they were also saying that they could play better.? I am sure glad the future leaders of our?community have this?attitude.

You are probably aware that Mr. Lange sent in an audition CD to the Monterey Next Generation Festival this year.? I believe we will hear if the Jazz Band gets into this?Festival in February.? However, I just want to inform you the Monterey Next?Generation Festival takes place on April 3-5, 2009.? This happens to be the first weekend of the Spring break.? Although we have not heard yet, please mark this on your calenders.
