Totally uncool!? How did we not qualify for the Monterey Next Generation Jazz Festival?? Just goes to show you that life continues to have lots of bumps and turns.? Oh well, we need to move on and continue to?work?at being?one of the best high school jazz bands around. ? We have another opportunity to participate in another jazz festival.? From April 23 to April 25 the Reno Jazz Festival at University of Nevada in Reno is taking place.? Mr. Lange checked with the students and it appears that we will have a complete jazz band.? The web site address for more information is:?? http://www.unr.edu/rjf/ ? I thnk this is a great idea.? Our Jazz Band continues to work hard playing better and better.? Then, they have the opportunity to perform?in front of an?audience outside of the Davis community.? Please mark these dates on your calender as we try to organize our participation at this event.? We have a number of details to work out. ? Thanks, Mike Choy DHS BB President -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Well, we are nearly sure we will be participating in the Reno Jazz Festival competition (April 23-25).? This event is a fairly large festival that includes big bands and combos from high schools and colleges.? There will be some great music that our students and some parents will be able to hear. ? We are in the process of reserving hotel rooms right now.? Unfortunately, the Jazz Festival weekend is a big weekend for Reno and the hotel rates are not the typical cheap rates that I had expected (My home town is Reno).? We have rooms reserved at the Silver Legacy for 4/23 and 4/24 which is close to the University of Nevada where the Festival is taking place.? The rooms that we have will hold 4 students/room and cost about $250/room.? We can get a discounted rate (I do not know how much off) if we reserve 11 rooms or more.? Thus, I need to know how many of you plan on going to the Festival and whether you want to room at the Silver Legacy. ? The specific information I need from you is: ? 1.???? Do you plan on going to the Festival and how many of you are going? 2.???? Do you want to room at the Silver Legacy? 3.???? If only one of you are going and you want to room at the Silver Legacy, do you want to share a room with one of the other Jazz Band parent? ? I need this information within the next couple of days, so please email me especially if you do want a Silver Legacy room.? If you plan to room in another hotel, I may not know specifics about?the hotel, but I can tell you about the general area. ? This should be a great event for our Jazz Band and I am looking forward to this trip. ? Mike Choy -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Peter and I were glad we were able to meet with some of you right after the Band Booster meeting last night.? As you know we are planning to compete in the Reno Jazz Festival.? This is a large Festival with very high end schools and colleges, so the music will be great.? This Festival definitely will give our sons and daughters a reason to continue working hard on their music. ? With the help and input of some of you we made some final decisions: ? 1.? The Festival (4/23-25) starts with a concert Thursday night and the competition occurs on Friday and Saturday.? Mr. Lange has requested that our Jazz band play Friday afternoon, but this is still totally up in the air right now.? We will go down Friday morning and plan to stay in the hotel Friday night.? The competition will be very keen, but if we are selected as one of the top bands and asked to a call back performance, the Jazz band will play and that performance will occur on Saturday evening.? ?After ?we hear from the judges that we are not being called back or after the Saturday evening call back performance (whatever the case may be), you are free to leave the Festival.? We are only booking the hotel for Friday night, so if the Jazz band plays on Saturday evening and you do not want to drive back to Davis in the middle of the night, you need to make separate lodging arrangements. ? 2.? We are booking rooms at the Silver Legacy hotel for all the students (combo students as well) and parents who want to stay there for Friday night (1 night only)?under a group rate of $189 per room per night (We already negotiated this price down and they are unwilling to go down any further?on the group rate).? The reason we are doing the group rate is because the hotel staff is telling us they will try their best to keep all the rooms in the same area (this hotel is huge).? The reason we are choosing the Silver Legacy is because we know this area of town and it is in walking distance to the University of Nevada campus.? Apparently parking at the Festival may be problematic and there are parking fees. ? 3.? Because of hotel policy (hotel is also a casino), we need to have a parent/student ratio of 1/3.? Thus, if you are on the fence about going, we encourage to go.? We will be talking about the logistics of this parent/student ratio later. ? 4.? Most important right now : ? A.? Do you want a room at the Silver Legacy? B.? How many of you are going? C.? If there only one of you, do you want to share a room with another parent? ?????? (4 students per room and 2 parents per room is planned) ? We?need to know this information by the end of Saturday. Combo parents ??We need to know if all of you are going to keep your reservation at the Travel lodge.???We are assuming your students will go to the Silver Legacy. ? Thanks, Mike and Peter ? ? -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... If you are going on the trip & did not receive the update, please let me know. There may be an issue with the email I have noted for you. I have also received several emails asking at Rent-A-Band. It looks as though the credits for R-A-B were accidentally left out of the summaries. We are checking into that now. Capital Jazz Project: The combined concert with our DHS Jazz Band on March 29 will be the fourth year the Capital Jazz Project (CJP) has performed at the Brunelle Theater/IPAB. The CJP is a group of local jazz professionals and educators committed to enhancing jazz performance and education in the Sacramento region (http://www.capitaljazzproject.com/). This year the CJP will again be featuring DHS students as soloists, they will play with our band and they will conduct an evening clinic with the Jazz Band in preparation for Reno. The CJP - Jazz Band concert is not part of our regularly scheduled DHS Bands series, therefore it is up to us to ensure this educational event for our students is as successful as possible. Please respond if you can volunteer with any of the following: 1. Ticket Sales: will be at the door only. Prices are reduced from last year to $12 adult, $8 student/senior, and $5 for children (Junior High and younger). 2. Publicity: we need to promote this concert as much as possible. This is a terrific concert for adults and a great way for younger students to learn about jazz and the DHS jazz program. We'd like to see a full auditorium so that this becomes a financially sustainable and ongoing educational and performance experience for our students. The following publicity assistance is needed: a. Davis Enterprise: one or more articles b. Junior High listserves and music programs c. DHS newsletter, other outlets d. Poster distribution around Davis and Woodland (students can be recruited) e. Woodland: High Schools and Community College f. Your workplace: a copy of the poster is attached...please post! g. Other?? (suggestions welcome) We are not planning on DVD sales, nor are we currently planning on selling water or baked goods. Reno Jazz Festival: Volunteers are needed for the Reno Jazz Festival (April 24 - 25) for the following positions: 1. Carpool coordinator: travel will be by private automobile. Given the distance, carpools must be arranged well in advance. 2. Chaperone coordinator: this is a chaperoned trip, especially given that we are staying at a casino hotel. 3. Breakfast coordinator: on the last Reno trip, several parents organized a bagel/juice breakfast in one of the adult hotel rooms. This was a good way to start the day, as it was fast and meant students had one less meal to buy in the casino. We will need breakfast on Saturday, April 25. Please help make these great events happen for our students and volunteer for one or several of the tasks described above.
