The folks at Berklee asked for an extension and promised to let me know by Thursday morning. We did have more audition tapes submitted then ever before, so I can understand the delay. Audition tapes were sent in late January and judged by a panel of judges from the Berkelee School of Music in Boston, Mass. Only 12 bands from across THE NATION were chosen. We have a whopping 124 students enrolled for the trip of a lifetime to Victoria, BC, from May 16-20, 2008, and the planning committee is busy ironing out all of the details for the trip. We've been able to negotiate some excellent deals for our group, so the total cost will be $660 per student, including all breakfasts and at least two dinners; plus planes, busses, ferries, hotel, Butchart Gardens, and other fun activities. The exact details can't be finalized until after our Festival performance venues are assigned later this Spring, but we will keep you posted. You will receive the second of three payment requests via e-mail within the next few days, for an additional $250 payment due by 2/24. The third and final payment request (another $260 in April) will include an adjustment reflecting each student's earnings from band fundraisers. If you believe that your student will be earning MORE than $260 in fundraisers, then you are free to adjust the February payment accordingly. A few reminders: A current passport is required! In order to balance the budget they are proposing some drastic cuts in services and programs for the coming year, including the elimination of the elementary band and string programs. With your child now in high school this may not directly affect you now, but I'm sure you can see that this will affect the quality of life for many younger students in this town. I have been asked to forward the letter below to all members of the Davis High School Band Boosters. I WHOLEHEARTEDLY SUPPORT THE GROUP ACTION SUGGESTED IN THIS LETTER. MAKE YOUR FEELINGS KNOWN AND HELP US TO PROTECT THIS MOST VALUABLE PORTION OF EVERY CHILD'S EDUCATION. Fred Lange ************************ Fellow Davis music parents and students, As many of you know, the school district is proposing to cut $4 million in order to balance its budget for next school year. Among the proposed cuts is the elimination of the elementary instrumental music program (strings and band for grades 4-6) valued at $200,000. The school board is scheduled to discuss this and other proposed cuts on Thursday, February 21 at 7 p.m. in the city council chambers at 23 Russell Blvd. (corner of 5th and A). PLEASE CONSIDER ATTENDING THE MEETING, IF AT ALL POSSIBLE. It is likely that they will only entertain *discussion* on the cuts, but will vote at a later meeting. We ask that all attendees supporting the Davis schools music program wear a paper 1/8th note in order that the school board members and district officials can identify us. You can either download and cut out the 1/8th note here: http://groups.dcn.org/dsoma/images/EighthNote.jpg or you can pick one up in person at the school board meeting. We invite all interested persons to attend, but in particular anyone directly connected (parent, student) with the Davis music programs (band, orchestra, choir). IF YOU CAN'T MAKE IT TO THE SCHOOL BOARD MEETING, we ask that you send an e-mail to school board members, or write a letter to the editor in the Davis Enterprise and describe why you think the elementary music program is important. Please keep your comments positive about the program. It is not helpful to be speaking negatively about any other programs. Click here to get links to school board member e-mail addresses and to submit letters to the editor at the Davis Enterprise: http://groups.dcn.org/dsoma/forms-and-documents/DavisMusicAdvocacy.html If the school music program were only about learning music, I could begin to accept this as part of normal fiscal responsibility. But it's not just about the music, and that is where a lot of misunderstanding occurs. As a parent, I see that my kids have found the district music program to be a safe community of peers where they can form friendships and work together as a group during the school day. There is no other program in the district that is as large and as comprehensive in setting these values of community, cooperation, and teamwork. If the district eliminates the elementary music program, it will severely degrade size and quality of the secondary music program. Concert bands, jazz bands, orchestras, even choirs will not be able to sustain the level collective music experience that is offered by an introduction to music through the elementary instrumental music program. The elementary instrumental music program forms the roots of the secondary music program. Our currently growing musical community will shrink in size without those roots. If school board members don't see how valuable this program is to the Davis community, then it will probably be deemed unimportant enough to cut. We thank you in advance for your support. We had an amazing response to the request for adult decorators as well as dessert makers. The efforts we parents put into baking directly benefits the band program and the effort the kids make in helping out with the decorations as well as serving and cleaning up directly benefits each of them by way of reducing the amount of money they will end up paying for their band trip or trips. There have been sign up sheets in the band room for 2 weeks. We have not gotten a very good response from the students. Their response may be due to several things in any one kid's life which would account for the overall apathetic response from them. I am requesting that the parents now consider encouraging your band student to get involved with this effort- especially decorating, serving and cleaning up. It directly benefits them financially and as well it could be said that involvement with putting this on brings many additional benefits. My son helped for hours last year. He got to know kids and parents whom he did not know before and had a greater appreciation of the hard work which goes into putting a function on. He also paid for much of his trip because of his hard work. For his parents, not having to write a large check for the band trip came as a relief. My son was very proud that he had helped and we commended him for working to help both put on Coconut Grove but also for helping pay for his trip. So please know that we do need more students especially Friday afternoon from 3:30 till around 7pm. This is when most of the work will be completed. We will serve pizza around 6pm for those who have been there working. The kids do not need to be there the whole time but it would be great to have lots of them involved.we parents need their help! Please note that the sign-up sheets will be up until Thursday Feb 21st. Also, remind your student to sign in and sign out when he or she does come to the MPR to work. Also, there will be close adult supervision for overall safety as well as to promote an excellent and efficient job gets done! My cell phone will be on and you may contact me while your student is there if need be. (757-9264) Thank you! Today I received the email below from Mr. Richard Reed, a parent of a Harper student and a member of the Superintendent's Advisory Committee. I guess we have a while before anything becomes official. Let's all take a breath and remember that what we are fighting for is the welfare and education of the children. I will not be attending the meeting tonight -- not because I don't believe or support this, but because I do not want to appear as "self- serving" (and because I do not wish to take up room with my scooter in an already full meeting room). Thank you for your support tonight and please be with us again if the worst comes to pass. Fred Lange ********** Fred, Ken and Clyde, I'm a parent at Harper and Korematsu. My son is in Ken's band class. I serve on the Superintendent's Community Outreach Advisory committee, among other involvement. The district will soon be hosting a structured budget workshop that will help music boosters and others recommend choices that may or may not resemble the "straw-man" list in the board agenda. I understand that the list is simply for illustrative purposes to start the thinking process within the district community (and to meet certain statutory requirements). It is nowhere near a final or even proposed list of cuts. In other words, as a tactical suggestion, you may want to save the heavy artillery. I would encourage you to tell the board tonight that we need an inclusive structured process to recommend budget changes/ priorities to the board. Thanks for your passionate support of music - we're there with you. We simply want to find the best path to get there. Yes--the DHS Jazz Band was selected in a national competition as one of twelve High School Jazz Bands to participate in the Monterey Next Generation Jazz Festival. This is a superb honor and a tribute to Mr. Lange and the students for their hard work and achievement. The NGF Festival is April 3 - 6, 2008 and is held at the Portola Hotel in Monterey. The NGF website is: http://www.montereyjazzfestival.org/NGF/ We will play on Saturday, April 5. I have not seen the performance schedule so don't yet know the time. Schedule: A more detailed schedule is in preparation, but the current status is: Friday, April 4: leave DHS, most likely right after school. Transportation will be by private automobile. This is a terrific Festival that you may want to attend, in which case you can drive your student. Nancy Hatamiya has kindly offered to coordinate carpools for those whose student will need a ride. In the past there has been an evening concert on Friday evening, which is worth attending. However, I have NO details at this time. Stay tuned! Note that we will be dealing with Friday rush hour traffic on the drive to Monterey, so factor in extra time to get there. Googlemaps says the distance is 175 miles and will take three hours through the Bay Area (but not on a Friday afternoon!). The alternate route is down I-5 and over Pacheco Pass: about 200 miles and three and one-half hours according to Google (Friday traffic on this route may or may not be as bad). Saturday, April 5: We play...sometime. Again--stay tuned. The current plan is to return Saturday night, which could be late. For those who want to stay through Sunday, the music continues through the weekend. I believe there are also auditions for music scholarships on Sunday morning--but this needs to be confirmed. Lodging: We have reserved rooms for the students at the Portola Hotel for Friday night only. We obtained a special rate of $144 (pre-tax) for the students and there will be up to four students per room. Mr. Lange has kindly offered to subsidize the hotel fee with funds from the music account, so the final amount for each student will be advantageous (Thank you Mr. Lange!). Since the Festival is at the Portola, this will be convenient and a great experience for the students. Plus, it's a nice place: http://www.portolahotel.com/ Non-chaperone parents should investigate their own hotels. Expedia is useful, among others. Hotels will fill up quickly, so don't wait! Chaperones: Although there will be many parents in Monterey for this weekend, we need several chaperones who will be officially responsible for the students and who will stay Friday night at the Portola Hotel. Technically, we need one female and two male chaperones. At this point point we have four women and one, possibly two men who have volunteered to be chaperones. These chaperones will take four of the six hotel rooms we reserved at the Portola Hotel for chaperones. If there are one or two more men who would like to chaperone please let me know. The chaperone rooms at the Portola Hotel are $199 per night (pre-tax). More details later. Best regards, Peter -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... This form applies to all prescription and over-the-counter drugs. Please return the form to Lisa Yamauchi by April 1 at either: Email: lyamauchi at comcast.net Mail: 1530 Jasmine Court, Davis, CA 95618 Please note the form requires the signature of your student's physician--do not delay! Lisa will collect medications for the New Orleans trip at the airport the morning we leave (April 10). We need this form before the Monterey trip. If you are planning on accompanying your student to Monterey then the School has advised me that chaperones should be aware of medical requirements but parents can handle medications. We may not need a medications coordinator, but please be sure to get the form to Lisa April 1 so we can be sure! Thanks for all your help. Pre-tax rate is $199. There are many rooms at a higher price in Monterey, and there have been rooms at a lower price. First claim on these rooms goes to another male chaperone volunteer. We're pretty much covered, but an additional official male chaperone is much appreciated. Anyone interested? Second claim goes to anyone who would like to take one of these rooms. The advantage is that the hotel is a nice place and it's were the Festival is located. The students will be staying in the same hotel on Friday night, sharing up to four per room. The stay at the Portola can be extended to Saturday night, but the rate goes up to $279 (pre-tax). I'm sending in names for the rooms the end of this week, so please let me know by Friday if you're interested.
