We need drivers for the Delta Jazz Festival this Saturday meeting at the band room at 8:30 am and leaving Stockton around 4:30-ish! I also need to know if you plan to stay for the Poncho Sanchez concert and if you are willing to transport other students who might need a ride back to Davis after the concert. Also, if you are coming later, but may be willing to drive students back to Davis, please volunteer for the one way trip! I am attaching the forms again, in case you haven't sent in the permission slip for your student to attend the field trip and the driver's form if you are planning to help us with the carpool (don't forget a copy of your insurance card, too). Please make sure Mr. Lange gets these by this Friday! I'll assign the carpools on Thursday and send them to Mr. Lange so he can let everyone know on Friday. Here are some of the notes from Peter Matlock's email: 1. Trip permission forms, which must be completed and signed for EACH student, and returned to Mr. Lange; 2. Carpool driver forms, which must be completed by each carpool driver, along with a copy of the driver?s auto insurance card?these must be given to the carpool coordinator. These forms are updated from last year?s forms, and I assume they are still valid. The DHS Jazz Band and combo will both be performing at the Delta Jazz Festival on Saturday, December 6. The Band warms up at 3:00 PM for a 3:30 PM performance. The combo must be there earlier than 10:30 AM to prepare for their 10:55 AM performance, and all students are expected to be at Delta College by 10:00 AM to hear the combo perform. The combo should leave Davis no later than 8:45 AM (8:30 is better). All other Band members should meet in the DHS Band Room at 8:30 AM to meet with Mr. Lange and connect with your carpool/driver, for a departure no later than 9:00 AM. Those students taking SAT's in the morning should plan to arrive at Delta College no later than 2:00 PM. All students are encouraged to bring a bag lunch, as snack facilities at the college are limited. Once the Jazz Band performance is complete, students are free to return to Davis, as the awards ceremony is optional and the Junior Prom is the same evening. There is an evening concert (see link below). Please be prepared for revisions to this information to be provided by Mr. Lange. Students will receive a wrist band for entry to school group performances, a noon concert and the clinics (1:00 for drums and piano; 2:30 for sax and bass). Parents and chaperones need to buy an admission pass at the box office ($10). Tickets for the evening Poncho Sanchez performance cost $25 - $35: http://www.deltacollege.edu/div/finearts/jazzfest/index.html San Joaquin Delta College is in the north part of Stockton--count on just over one hour for the drive. Directions: South on I-5, exit at March Lane, drive east on March Lane, turn left on Pacific Avenue and drive north to the entrance at Yokuts Ave. See this link: http://www.deltacollege.edu/info/general/map/directions.html Additional Information: Last year, the following information was provided by Delta College--I assume it is the same this year: Percussionists: must bring cymbals, complete hi-hat and bass drum pedal Bassists and guitarists: bring your own 1/4" patch cords Delta College is in session--we are requested not to disturb classes No food or drink allowed in the theater or classrooms Students must not congregate outside the warm-up or performance areas. Just in case you didn't - there are some important dates coming up in January, so take note: DHS BANDS 2009 SAN DIEGO SPRING TOUR Fri. May 15 ? Tues. May 19 Dear Band Parents: Nov. 17, 2008 The San Diego Trip committee is already hard at work putting together a wonderful trip for the band students. All students are encouraged to participate in this educational and memorable music experience. The group will travel by bus with parent chaperones and will stay at the Embassy Suites Hotel in La Jolla. The students will have various performance, competition and master class opportunities during the trip. We will also visit local sites such as Sea World, the USS Midway, and one or more universities during our tour. Depending on final costs we may be able to visit the San Diego Zoo or other attractions as well during our stay. The trip will include all breakfasts and some dinners. Additional spending money for meals and personal purchases will be necessary. The students will have some free time on their own, but chaperones are always available, and strategically ?stationed? during free time periods to offer ?non-invasive? supervision at all times. Study times at the hotel are available each evening for any student wishing to study. All STAR and AP testing will be completed before the trip. Currently we are planning to leave after school on Fri. May 15th which is the last day of AP tests. Depending on band students scheduled for afternoon tests that day, we may decide to leave just after lunch if no students will be impacted by the testing schedule. The following is a preliminary overview of the planned venues/activities. Please note that all venues and activities are still being finalized and this itinerary is subject to change many times before the trip! Preliminary Sample Itinerary Fri. May 15 Depart DHS immediately after school Stop for dinner along the way Arrive by midnight in La Jolla Sat. May 16 Full breakfast provided at hotel Music in the Parks Festival, Sea World Dinner at Sea World Supervised hotel free time, study and swim Sun. Trip Cost The final costs of the trip will be determined over the next few months as venues and activities are firmed up. Travel costs have risen dramatically recently, but we will do everything we can to keep the costs as reasonable as possible. The total cost for the trip will likely be between $475 and $550 per student. Payments will be made in 3 installments, starting in mid January. Every student who wishes to attend this trip will be able to. Financial assistance is available but you must contact Mr. Lange directly, well in advance. Band Boosters has allocated funds for student assistance, and all requests will be strictly confidential, between Mr. Lange and the family only. Please discuss your situation with Mr. Lange before the first payment in January, so that Band Boosters can appropriately budget all costs into our trip planning. Fundraising Opportunities Students have already begun adding to their individual band accounts from the fall fundraisers ? car washes, Natsoulas Festival raffle, and Entertainment Book sales. Upcoming fundraising opportunities include the holiday Rent a Band ensembles, Play-a-thon in January and Coconut Grove in February. Your student can significantly ?buy down? the cost of their trip by participating in these fundraisers. Payment Schedule: Jan 16: $250 trip deposit due. This deposit is non-refundable, since we will be using the funds collected in January to pay the bill for the hotel immediately. We realize that finances are difficult for many families especially just after the holidays, but we need our final count for hotel rooms by February 1st, so you must sign up and send a deposit to secure a spot for your child. March 6: 2nd payment due - $150. April date TBD: Final payment will be calculated individually for each student. It will depend on the final trip cost, less any money the student has earned in their individual band account. If your student has earned more than is required for the final payment, then you will be notified and reimbursed for any previous overpayments. Please look for an official sign up form and payment coupon which will be distributed just after winter break in January. We sincerely hope that all band students will sign up for the Spring Tour. There is nothing that helps to unify a group like touring and sharing music together. If you have any questions regarding the trip please feel free to contact me or Mr. Lange for clarification. The results are in from the Delta Jazz Festival and are as follows: ********** DHS Combo (Isaac Bunch, Chris Hunt, Neil Heaton, John Miller): Third Place overall and a nice trophy for the bling! Outstanding Soloist awards to Neil Heaton and Chris Hunt! Scores = 87, 85, and 84 *********** Big Band: Fourth Place overall (no trophy) Outstanding Soloist awards to John Hatamiya and Kevin Choy Scores = 94, 92, 92 ---- and we achieved our goal of straight Superiors and now we can submit for Monterey. ************* Hugs and Kisses and all your Holiday wishes to all the parents who helped out on Saturday. Peter Matlock for initiating and organizing the info and getting it sent our from Buffalo, NY, inspite of a real sadness in his life. Nancy Hatamiya who did a stellar job organizing the rides. Ema Miille for doing the practice sheet thing. All the kids who played so superbly in the festival, were on time, listened to the other groups perform and shared a great musical experience. ******** My only sadness was that some parents needed to be called again and again to confirm their students' traveling arrangements. Please, everyone, when we send out an email requesting a permission slip, or drivers, or .... PLEASE respond -- even if the answer is NO. Going to a festival like this requires a lot of GROUP COMMITMENT, and this really becomes a headache for the organizer.
