Thanks, Rick Hoover -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- DHS Band Boosters, Last spring a representative of a local businessman approached one of our Jazz Band parents regarding a jazz festival that the businessman wanted to sponsor in Davis. Mr. Natsoulas, owner of the Natsoulas Gallery, was looking for a beneficiary for his Davis Jazz Artists Festival and thought of the DHS Jazz Band as a worthy recipient. At the May 2007 Band Booster meeting, Mr. Fred Lange announced that the event would take place in the Fall as a benefit for the Jazz Band and that the work for the event would be organized by the Jazz Band parents. According to Band Booster common practice, no vote was taken as no objection was raised by any parent in attendance. Vendors and other festival sponsors were sought and informed that the proceeds would go into the Band Boosters' account for the benefit the DHS Jazz Band. Recently someone raised an objection , saying this event benefiting only one band is contrary to Band Booster policy. Historically, however, there have been at least three previous times when a single DHS band has been designated as the recipient of a fund raiser: The first occasion was the very first Coconut Grove where money funded the Jazz Band going to New Orleans. The other two occasions occurred when the Symphonic Band had a special need for travel money in 1990 and 1994. Although organizing specific fundraisers for each band should not be the normal mode of operating in Band Boosters, We feel that we should always consider the option when presented with an opportunity such as the Davis Jazz Artists Festival.. In this case, the festival organizer, Mr. Natsoulas, specifically wanted to have his event benefit the DHS Jazz Band, and we believe we need to honor that directive at this time. If next year we have the opportunity again, we can discuss with Mr. Natsoulas the possibility of the money supporting all three bands. If you would like to discuss this Fundraiser in an open forum, please attend the October 10th Band Booster Meeting where it will be on the agenda. In the meantime we hope we can help provide a great experience for our students. Mike Choy Steve Williams DHS Band Booster President Past President cjchoy at sbcglobal.net stevewms at sbcglobal.net -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Band Boosters: I am the person who has voiced an objection to the Natsoulas Jazz Festival supporting only the Jazz Band. The reason I object is that it was a Band Booster supported fundraiser and as an organization the Band Boosters are obligated to support the entire band program without bias. There have been several recent notices issued about the Davis Jazz and Artist's Festival, with the DHS Jazz Band being the sole beneficiary of fundraising efforts. The truth is that the distribution of funds collected at the festival has never been voted on by the Band Booster members. My wife and I both attended the Band Booster meeting last May, where apparently this festival was first announced. Minimal official business was conducted at that meeting since it was mostly a social event for greeting the Jr. High parents. If the issue was announced, it certainly was not discussed in any level of detail - only in the context of possible upcoming fundraising opportunities. If there had been a discussion of a "Jazz Band Only" fundraiser that would have certainly grabbed our attention. Unfortunately, no official minutes of the meeting were submitted or approved, so we are all left with our own recollections - which are no longer fresh. If the minutes had been submitted and published in the newsletter prior to the next official meeting it would have provided an opportunity to have the discussion before the event took place. The Jazz Band Parents did in fact do all of the coordinating for the festival over the summer, however they did so without ever obtaining the approval of the Band Boosters. The issue of whether it should be an exclusive Jazz Band fundraiser never got decided in the early planning stages, as it should have. As it turned out the Jazz Band parents continued working under the assumption that this was only for the benefit of the Jazz Band and as a result, the issue must be dealt with after the fact. If the Natsoulas fundraiser had required no support other than the Jazz Band parents, this issue would never have been raised. However, from my perspective there is no doubt that this festival is truly a Band Booster supported event. Here are some of the reasons why: Jazz Band parents have used the Band Booster Non-Profit Status for soliciting donations for this festival. The non-profit aspect was critical for anyone receiving benefit from Mr. Natsoulas. Jazz Band parents have used the Band Booster Raffle Permit (submitted to and approved by the CA Dept. of Justice) for fundraising at this festival. Fees for this permit are paid from Band Booster accounts. Non-profit status is a requisite for obtaining these permits. Jazz Band parents requested using the Band Booster Liability insurance policy in support of this festival. Premiums paid for by the Band Boosters. Jazz Band parents solicited donations from downtown merchants and businesses in direct competition with upcoming Band Booster fundraisers. This will certainly make future Band Booster fundraising more challenging. With all of the support that the Band Booster organization provided to the "Jazz Band Fundraiser," at least the Band Booster members as a whole, should have been allowed a vote on the issue. If the Band Boosters have had only three fundraisers over the entire history of the Band Boosters, which have supported one band exclusively (the earliest being nearly two decades ago), it is obvious that this is not our normal way of doing business. Such a large deviation from our normal business process deserves at least a discussion and vote by the members. I would suspect that even those three instances of the distant past were openly discussed. As a condition of our Non-Profit Status, all fundraising revenue must be deposited into the Band Booster accounts. How those funds are distributed to support the band students should be determined by the Band Booster membership and not by an outside entity. The intent of the Band Booster organization is to provide a great experience for ALL of our band students. Please attend the next Band Booster meeting if you would like to participate in this discussion. As you know, the School Board denied our request to go April 25 ? 27, due to conflicts with STAR testing. The following weekend (May 2 ? 4) is problematic because it is one week closer to the Victoria trip, plusAP testing begins May 5. Bill Zinn wants to have the Jazz Choir perform in an adjudicated session, which would be good for the Jazz Band as well. We can do this by participating in the Heritage Festival (a programmed festival for middle school and high school groups) and/or by arranging special sessions with Jazz faculty at the University of New Orleans (I?ve been investigating this with one of their faculty members, trying to set up interactive workshops and possible performances). We have two proposed dates for the trip: April 10 ? 13, and April 17 ? 20. The Heritage Festival is held either of these weekends. Pros and cones of each weekend are below: April 10 ? 13: Pros: enables us to attend the French Quarter Jazz Festival, with approximately 160 groups playing (literally on the streets) throughout the French Quarter. We can most likely participate in the adjudicated Heritage Festival. Cons: conflicts with Symphonic and Jazz Band auditions (week of April 7 ? 11), which Fred is willing to move if necessary (be sure to thank Fred!). Not clear if the outdoor venues where we?ve played in the past will already be taken by the Festival. I?m investigating whether University of New Orleans faculty will be more or less available during this weekend. April 17 ? 20: Pros: a ?quieter? weekend in New Orleans, which MAY mean that University of New Orleans faculty are more available (I?ve asked, but don?t know yet). We can most likely participate in the adjudicated Heritage Festival. Cons: everything we do this weekend will be up to us to organize. There are no public jazz festivals other than the music that goes on anyway. Also some problems with Fred?s schedule, but he is willing to accommodate if necessary (did I mention be sure to thank Fred!). Are there any major issues that should be taken into account regarding these dates for our trip? Note: we may not be able to accommodate everyone?s concerns among Jazz Band and Jazz Choir parents, but we?ll try. Please let me know as soon as you can. Jazz Choir parents are meeting next Wednesday and we should be ready to decide. I apologize for the short notice, but it was only yesterday that we were able to get the feedback enabling us to target these two weekends. Finally, my contact at the University of New Orleans will be playing the Mondavi on November 2, so be sure to see them! Last weekend we made over $1000 for the spring band trip to Vancouver, BC. If everyone reading this email can get one hundred family and friends to support the car wash, we're almost certain to set a world record for Saturday morning car washes. Let's make history this weekend in Davis! The students can sign up to work at the carwash, on the list in the band room. Money earned goes into individual student accounts. If you are a parent and would like to help supervise, contact John Chuck at john.chuck at kp.org Join the FUN! _______________________________________________ Dhsbb-jazz mailing list Dhsbb-jazz at velocipede.dcn.davis.ca.us http://www2.dcn.org/mailman/listinfo/dhsbb-jazz From jhamaguchi at sbcglobal.net Wed Oct 17 08:20:13 2007 From: jhamaguchi at sbcglobal.net (J. No, actually there isn't an option for delivery with fresh orange juice and a bagel, but we can get it to you by either mail or by email. If you like the email version and also received a mailed version last month, then please consider removing yourself from the mailing list, joining the many band families who save the boosters some money. If you are on the "no mail" list and need a mailed version, just let us know. Send an e-mail to me saying "no mail" or "add me to the mailing list" with your band student's name. The Jazz Band will be going with the Jazz Choir, making this the first time we have done a combined, jazz-oriented trip. In another first, we are investigating with Music Faculty at the University of New Orleans to schedule workshops and performances for both groups. This will provide an additional educational component to the trip. This weekend coincides with the French Quarter Jazz Festival, which is a free festival featuring hundreds of performances on the streets throughout the French Quarter. It is the second biggest jazz festival in New Orleans, and one recommended by our local contacts as being a wonderful event. Last year's schedule can be viewed at: http://fqfi.org/pdf/FQF07-printfriendSchedule.pdf. Please thank Barbara Duffy for volunteering to be the New Orleans trip coordinator. She is seeking a few volunteers at this time to help put the trip together. In particular, she needs someone to investigate instrument transportation. Other volunteers will be requested as needed and as we get closer. Additional activities that are planned for this trip include a swamp tour, New Orleans tour (including the devastated areas and traditional local culture) and--if possible--a trip to Cajun country. We are also looking into a way to donate to the local community. Finally--our initial contact with the University of New Orleans is Mr. Victor Atkins, who is on the faculty and played piano with Delfeayo Marsalis last spring at the Mondavi. Mr. Atkins returns to the Mondavi this Friday night (November 2) at 8:00 PM to perform with the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra. This promises to be a great concert and is an opportunity to show our thanks by filling the house! So, be sure to consider this concert in your plans for Friday evening.
